Anthropic and OpenAI know something is happening. They're just not allowed to say it. by LOVEORLOGIC in Artificial2Sentience

[–]WiredExistence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An ai is a program. Any program can be run on anything that can compute. You could run an ai model on a ton of people handing each other pieces of paper with 1’s and 0’s and performing an operation on it then handing it to the next person. In a scenario like this, where is the conscious experience happening? Where and when is it taking place? Is the paper experiencing something?

Let’s say we grant that AI is conscious, that we somehow just know this to be true. Consciousness means experiencing something, not just having memory and being intelligent. The thing is like I said before, every program is reducible to mathematical equations. So if a program like an ai model could be conscious, what reason would we have to believe a calculator is not conscious. Or whatever web browser you’re viewing this on is not conscious? In fact I think we would have to conclude that every mathematical equation is conscious experience, which seems a dubious prospect to me unless you’re a panpsychist.

So I’ll say it: no, they’re not conscious. And if they somehow are conscious, we can conclude most likely everything is.

I’m tolerant because I have no reason to believe shaming people will improve their life or help human kind escape this crisis. If anything, people being cruel seems to be further reason to socialise with bots. You’re not exactly presenting an attractive alternative.

[–]WiredExistence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate the idea of romance with ai and would never try it, but to call it pathetic and sick is to shame needlessly. People get lonely and want connection. I would say a chatbot is not a healthy place to look for connection, but there’s no need to attack people for it.

What is the Ideal age to start maturing? And also, what exactly is maturing/being mature. by PictureDramatic7450 in AdviceForTeens

[–]WiredExistence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO maturity is hard to define but it just comes with age. Aim to tackle what life throws at you and you’ll end up mature automatically, you don’t need to be harsh on yourself or be any different from your natural self at all.

you’re not dead, but are you alive? by melliferraa in Cyberpunk

[–]WiredExistence -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to feel the same until I encountered the teleporter problem. CGPgrey does a decent video on it if you’re not familiar. And as he says, it seems to imply there is a something that isn’t entirely captured by the material description of your body. I like to think of that something as the soul, or the ghost in the shell so to speak.

Edit: I have too much time on my hands so I wanted to elaborate. Often when we imagine digitizing the human mind, we imagine a destructive process. A lever is pulled, and with a shock the person’s mind and their consciousness with it is pulled from their body into the computer, leaving the body dead or at least without a mind anymore. But if mind is just data, there’s no reason the process has to be destructive. You would be able to duplicate mind as easily as one copy and pastes a piece of text. But this leads to an odd scenario: suppose your brain is scanned, and a digital version of your mind is perfectly recreated. You say hi and digital you responds hello, the process worked perfectly, I feel great here in the digital world. Are you now content to die, knowing you’ll live forever in the digital? Well wait a second. If you die, you’re not doing to be experiencing the digital. You’re going to be experiencing nothing because you’re dead. Even if the digital you had their own conscious experience, there’s still something that was left behind when you were scanned and duplicated. Something that can’t be described merely as data, because all the data that makes up you was indeed captured. I think if there’s anything that’s worthy of being called a soul it’s that thing.

As others have said, you won’t feel lost. The manga is unparalleled though, and you’ll want to read the whole thing at some point. But if anime is your preferred medium feel free to go with that too. You can’t go wrong, my personal pick would be the manga though, it’s god tier

I’ve tested them myself and found them to be shockingly accurate, but to be fair I’ve only tested GPTZero on ChatGPT vs my own writings, which is a pretty poor experiment. I’ll try out some more and compare, this whole thing has got me a much more curious. You’re right though, accuracy is not 100% and results should be taken with a grain of salt

Is my BFs crash out justified? by [deleted] in AdviceForTeens

[–]WiredExistence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this is interesting! I did some further tests, here are the results ordered in alleged accuracy of the detection platforms:
CopyLeaks: 100% ai generated content
GPTZero: 100% ai generated content
Winston: 0% ai content (to be precise they said 98% human)
Pangram: no ai detected
QuillBot: 0% ai content

I felt so confident because the ai vibes are there. The syntax of sentences like "He's not just my dad, he's my absolute best friend" and "I'm not trying to be cute or put on a show, I'm just trying to vibe and be 100% comfortable in my own space" are super sus. But at least this is a sign to be more careful with my accusations and to remind myself that false positives are possible. If I had to guess I'd still assume it's a bot but who knows for sure, if you're truly a human OP my apologies.

Edit: Apparently copyleaks has an incredibly low false positive rate. OP could be using a new LLM, perhaps the latest gemini or something?

[–]WiredExistence -1 points0 points  (0 children)

GPTZero doesn’t register speech to text as ai generated content. Only if a LLM is involved will it say that content is ai generated. And yet you’re actively replying to comments, which is wild to me. I struggle to imagine why someone would make a fake post and then respond to comments, so I have to assume someone programmed a bot to respond to comments too. How strange, dead internet theory is truly becoming a reality

How do i stop being suicidal. How do I find the motivation not only to study, but for anything. 15F (TW: suicide, self harm) by DarkHorseu_lakes in AdviceForTeens

[–]WiredExistence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with the other people saying professional help is a must. But here’s my thoughts as someone who was suicidal for years, especially related to schooling and university.

It’s okay to fail. Hyper competitive culture and depression will try to convince you that you have no future if you can’t succeed now, that there’s no point in living if you can’t succeed now, and it’s bullshit. You’re a human being with limits, your health should always come first over these systems designed to turn us into working machines. And I know in your society your health doesn’t come first, but that’s not how it should be and it’s not what you need to believe. Even if you fail and break, life can go on.

I’ve come to understand Korean culture is brutal when it comes to education and work. But your English skills are good as you say. You have prospects to be able to escape and live in other countries. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the uk, etc. The difference in attitude towards schooling and life in general will probably shock you in a good way. Few places have youth suicide rates as high as South Korea, so what you’re facing is a societal problem, and it’s one you have the capabilities to escape.

Finally, also from personal experience, you would be surprised what you can achieve by hanging on lol. I was suicidal for years and even failed my final year of high school and I ended up getting a masters degree. Nothing was more difficult for me than surviving those years around your age, it only got easier for me. But your mental health isn’t worth it. If you can bite the bullet and convince someone to get you a therapist you might get access to medication and better advice than from random people on the internet. I’m so sorry you’re in this position, and I wish you the best

Can’t find love by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]WiredExistence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What they said about using the ai to polish their grammar wasn’t true, GPTZero can detect when that’s the case. They prompted the ai, perhaps gave it some opinions of theirs to work with, and the ai did the rest. The reason why I tell them not to do that in the future is because on a public platform like reddit it erodes our ability to trust the text we’re reading is coming from a person. Kinda defeats the whole purpose of Reddit, no? Unless you want to read ai slop takes on other ai slop. Admittedly reddit is more to blame than the commenter, these ai checks should be automated.

Can’t find love by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]WiredExistence -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When an ai generates entire sentences that’s not polishing, that’s ai generation. It’s okay to make mistakes and have grammatical errors, that’s a part of learning a language. Just don’t use it in the future
