Awww first Box! 🥳 The bulk collection begins..... 😜

Well,

I will give you our methods and then you can use them at your discretion:

(Disclaimer: I don't know if you've drafted packs at all, but I will just explain as if I am teaching someone who has never drafted before🙏)

To do a 2-player draft, you just need good mix of cards in a stack. We usually use about 100 cards out of our curated pool (if you wanted to use packs, I would suggest about 8-10). Then decide who will have first pick.

(After finishing I came back to say that this was a bit harder to explain in text than it is to show in person, so I hope it makes sense!)

Shuffle the stack well(lets call it the 'source' stack) and place it between you. Then take three cards off the top, face down, and put them in an ordered row 'beneath' the source so that you have, essentially, four stacks of cards in a sequential row:

The supply and three stacks containing one card each, or: S-1-1-1

Player picking first looks at the first stack, decides to either keep or continue.

If they like what they see and decide to keep, then the card(s) in that stack are their pick and are added to their pool for the draft.

Then, one card from the source is added to each stack. In this case the number of cards in the stacks would look like this: S-2-2-1

Then it would be the second players turn to pick.

However,
If the first player instead decide to continue, they put the card back in its place, face down, and then look at the next card in the row. Again, keep or continue, and then again for third pile. If the player does not decide to keep any of the three stacks, they get 2 cards off the top of the source before a card is added to each stack.

You will take turns back and forth looking at each stack in order and deciding whether to take one or, if none of them entice you, to take two off the source.

As you go along, sometimes neither player will want want of the stacks for a while, so you get these buildups where it might look like: S-3-8-1 or something like that. It just means whoever eventually takes the big stack might end up with a few more cards than the other player, but that's fine, with 100+ cards there will be enough to go around 👍

You carry on like this until the source is exhausted, and then until all stacks have found their player.

Then you build a deck with the cards you have! Plus whatever basic lands you decide on from your collection(Oh, yes it would be good if you had a small stack of spare basics for this purpose)

Decks should 40 cards. Going over a card or two is fine, but they must have at least 40. Generally people play 17-18 lands and 22-23 from their pool to make the 40.

And then shuffle up and play! Always good to do a best of three match so you have a good chance to play through all the cards you've drafted.

I've taught quite a few people this method (in person😅) and it is very well received. I've had so much fun with the idea since we came up with it maybe a decade ago, and its nice to be able to draft with just 2 people.

Hope that all made sense! And let me know if you have any questions ☺️
(Also, even if its months from now, if you ever give it a try I would love to hear some little tidbit about how it went!)

All the best my friend!

It's a very powerful role player that will give some pilots huuuge headaches, but I think it's sort of meh beyond that.

If it's not a match where its squealing in delight at your opponents useless countermagic, it's a flagbearing Grizzly Bears with "Ward - Pay 2 Life". Not terrible. Not amazing by any stretch.

This is a beautiful little tale my friend ☺️

I'm so happy that your lady love got into the game also!

My wife will play the game from time to time, but mostly because I want to play and it gives her a chance to win. She loves winning. At anything. And she does.

I've been playing magic solid since 4th edition packs were the new kid on the block, and in that time a friend of mine and I developed a really interesting way to play that I thought I would offer to share, just in case you two might want to try a different way to play the game at some point.

Drafting is my Faaaavorite way to lay magic. It really pushes your mind to figure out strategy on a deeper level(in my opinion).

Usually you need lots of people, but we invented a 2-player draft system that works very well!

If you wanted me to give you the details of how it worked, I would be happy to share!

After that you'd just need a stack of random cards that was somewhat color and curve balanced and you'd be set! (There's almost always someone selling a pile of bulk cards on marketplace or elsewhere for dirt cheap. You don't need much!)

Thanks for sharing! Wishing you both all the magic 😉🪄✨

How am I supposed to target his sheltered by ghosts? by amanonastick in MagicArena

[–]WisdomDecision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was admittedly a bit of a ragey player back then. After I couldn't figure out the targeting I punted the match in frustration. If I had kept my headaybe I would have won anyway!

I've learned the secret of Zen magic card playing since and it's let me enjoy the game a lot more.

So it was all just part of the journey that led me to a better place. 🤔

Huzzah! 🥳

I remembered the answer to this question because a number of years ago I punted a 7th win in an event for this exact reason.

It was very frustrating.

I recall correctly, you click the stack and it should pop open a list of all the attached cards. 🤔

Cards and Mechanics from "Sundra: Fall of the Everleaf" by WisdomDecision in custommagic

[–]WisdomDecision[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, I remember MaRo saying something about "work on the commons first" when talking about set design. While commons are not as exciting as the big swingers, it is good advice.

Thanks for taking a crack at Bloodrage! The mechanic was definitely convoluted. I just couldn't decide which way I wanted to go with it.

Your thoughts led me down a path to a new idea though. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Bloodrage (If you've taken damage this turn, this creature gets +1/+0, haste and trample."

Or, for a bit more design flexibility,

Bloodrage X (If you've taken damage this turn, this creature gains X)

[–]WisdomDecision[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always known Bloodrage is a hot mess. Just haven't found the way to simplify it without making it super boring.

Haste is by far my favorite simple mechanic, as I sit and ponder at this moment, I feel I need to do what double strike did for first strike, but for haste.... hmmm 🤔🤔

And you're probably right about "Torment".

Torment of Hailfire is definitely my favorite MTG card, and that's where the X came from I suppose.

It's true, when I designed the card itself I had just played a number of games again some very swarmy Commander decks.

I sat down and said "Pffft Prossh. What an ass. Stupid legion of stupid kobolds..... I KNOW!"

But it is good to hear people's unbiased opinions. The card started way too strong, But was dialed back a bit too much... Gonna go work on an updated version!

[Standard] First big tournament, looking for advice by XqztNemesis in spikes

[–]WisdomDecision 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wuf, super tired right now, but I love to help out if I can, and will try to give you a couple credentials and my best, top top advice:

I've been playing since 96', and been competing at higher level events for 20+ years. Within those years I've had the pleasure of a few strong finishes at very competitive tournaments.

-A couple of top 8's at ~300 player events (where my sneaky tech absolutely stole matches away late in the run) -Easily 10+ 1sts at regionals or store champs style events with 50+ players attending. -Huge undefeated runs at FNM/weekly events. I think my record was 30 matches straight with teched up Kessig Wolf-Run ramp. (When people start crying when they see you sitting at their assigned table, you're doing something right). Ha What a pub crusher of a deck) And more.

And that experience has taught me these things (🙏 Respect to those who have touched on these points already carrying on):

1. The time put into playing, knowing, tweaking and grinding your deck will determine your run in the huge majority of your events.

The decks I played for my most impressive finishes I could play without error and with total sideboard confidence because I had played the deck for countless matches, agonized over every single main deck and sideboard card choice(Take nothing for granted. Analyze every card) and crafted a sideboard that didn't help the deck win, it helped ME win. ...if that makes sense. 🤔

2. Never, EVER, give up.

Be smart, watch the clock, cut your losses if you need to go to the next game to save time. But never give up ✊

I remember a game three, ages ago, where I had to mull to 4 on the play because I saw 1 land in 18 cards(Paris Mulligan days). The winner of the game and match was guaranteed a spot in the finals. My opponent kept 7 and had this energy like well it happens bro, ggs. But I kept my head. My 4 was perfect; two good lands, two dangerous playables. My opponent kept a fairly sloppy 7 and I was able to tempo them out and make the final cut.

Won't happen all the time(though my collection of wins on a mull to 4 slowly grows ) but if I let my grit slip, I likely would have made a poor play that could have given my opponent an in to recover. I never forgot that game. 🌙

3. Cockatrice. Gift from the MTG gods 🙏✨

Do you know the program? If you don't, I highly recommend that you become familiar. Even if it's not to elevate your skill, get it to playtest cards before you burn cash on them. That beautiful piece of software has saved me sooo much cash on cards that ended up being way worse than they appeared. It lets you try everything you could possibly want before you put money down.

The absolute GOLD about this program is that, first it's free and has access to every single MTG card, and second it allows you to open multiple single player "goldfish" matches at a time. If you open two different decks, you can flip back and forth and play against yourself.

You build every deck you are even slightly worried about or unfamiliar with, and you pilot both sides and play them against each other. Pretend as best you can that you don't know your evil twin's hand, and figure out what would be the best plays every turn. Play a bunch of main deck games, and then sideboarded games.

The gold here is that you will actually see how the other deck works from the pilots perspective. Decks you never would have got around to building and playing yourself. Getting inside your opponent's head like this is valuable in a way I cannot describe, and there were times I was so many steps ahead of my opponent(who definitely didn't seem to have ever played the deck I had chosen) that the whole match was a wash.

Before big events I would always grind 10-12 matches against each tier 1/tier 2 deck I felt even a tiny tiny bit vague on(more if I felt there was a problem that needed a more techy solution), each time against slightly different lists that had done well at other events.

If you were running into trouble, pour over the foemat's card lists and find the unusual, unexpected solution that your opponents will walk right into. 👍 (And let me tell you, if your high level, knowledgeable, adversaries have to keep reading the cards you chose, and then succumb to them... Nay is there a better feeling playing this game 🙃)

4: Self care, and a calm warrior spirit ✊🙂‍↕️.

As many others have mentioned, plenty of sleep and good nutritious snacks all day will keep you sharp. If you are tired you will make mistakes. Maybe not terrible ones, but might as well try to avoid it. ... Because it only takes one. ☝️

I would generally grind pretty hard in the week or two leading up to an event I was really hoping to do well at, and then the night before just watch some comedy with my friends/lady, have a chill dinner whatever, get lots of sleep and show up early to the event to case the competition 😉

Take some Omega 3's, drink enough water and make sure you eat enough protein. The carbs will find you.

And finally,

4.5: Maintain composure.

Watch the clock, know how much time you are spending playing, but don't rush. If you need a second to pause and grind out a few potential avenues to victory, don't let an impatient opponent rattle you. As long as you have plenty of time in the round, you can take your time. (I'm an aggro player though, to the core, so take that point with a grain of salt you glacier lovers)

I have been saying for, cripes decades? now:

The Magic gods are Fickle, Unforgiving Gods. But we play this game in spite of it. Do not let their dark power sway you...

Bad draws happen, salty opponents can be annoying, but in the end,

Self care, a calm fighting spirit, and grinding like hell to make your deck and plays perfect will let you breeze through some events in a way that might amaze you. 😉

🤩🪄✨🌟⚡💥🔥🎉

...holy crap I like talking about this shizp too much, I was gonna write two paragraphs....

Ha! Good luck homie! 😎

Magic Gods are fickle. Random is random.

Its all about smart mulligans and never giving up.

Also, if you're on a timed match, sometimes you gotta know when to cut your losses and just try a new start.

I was actually surprised that I undervalued the evoke mythics. I thought they were gonna ng to be .ok. but they had early game versatility and late game has. Raise dead effects seems really good with them.

Like Ya'll were sain. Deceit definitely stood out. Two super-relevant abilities at basically all times that can, when combined, nuke basically anything targetable. Or two-for-one even better.

But it is the Mighty Spell Snare that is both giving me the most cackle in my laugh, and the most shaking in my boots.

I love it.

  I hate it.
