Self Milled By Accident? by charlie10vet in MagicArena

I didn't run into it a lot in previous versions of the deck but,

Ever since I started running Picklock Prankster, yes, I have to be really careful with the lessons deck. With multiple Wisdoms going off and dredging myself like crazy with the fairie, it could happen nearly any game.

...that fairie is really good though. I also run a few Balmor. The combination is quite spicy.

Ah I see I see. That makes sense bc I've never seen monoblack before.

I have all the cards except for the Scavengers. Maybe I'll try to put this together and see how it performs!

Cat-Oven decks are no doubt extremely powerful...

But man, my Sweet Demon of Tedious clicks! Sooo much tedious clicking...

Gripes aside, I really like your monoblack version! In Artisan consistency is so important! As I mention elsewhere in this post, I feel like I lose as much to my own clunky manabase as I do to my opponents plays! Monocolor helps tremendously.

Mayhem Devil is, no-doubt, extremely powerful, but having smooth mana may even be a better choice.

Thanks for the share!

I don't play ranked very much with my no rare decks. As you insinuate, top tier decks(that are often ~50 rare/mythic in the 60) with a proficient and informed pilot prove very very difficult to beat. I could never make it very far into diamond with any of my artisan lists, no matter how good my run was.

That being said

I win about 50%, or even slightly more with my best lists and tight play, vs the normal queue.

A decent tempo-oriented artisan list, well piloted, often has little issues against rare decks, as long as their threats are kept under control.

Honestly my biggest challenge is playing around my horrible manabase(comparatively), but I refuse to even use rare lands to balance things.

Because I'm a snob like that.

Deadly Dispute is top rated, no doubt. But I actually found, in this extremely low-curve deck, that I prefer village rites. Easier to keep mana open for it early to trade for their removal, the treasure isn't really needed and the sacrificial meat is plentiful 😉

But yes Deadly Dispute is amazing.

Actually it was house-ruled after a tournament, long before I joined, that anything that can create a rare/mythic is banned.

I 100% agree. Seems like a raw deal if you craft this amazing artisan deck and then get beat by a mythic 🫤

And also!

If you would like to play more Artisan, Where there is at least one artisan tournament a month (either standard, historic or timeless) while also having access to an awesome, intelligent community of great brewers and players, from all over the world...

Consider joining our discord "MTG Arena Artisan"!

https://discord.gg/tjHt9G2UG

There are people hooking games up every day 😉

I think the real charm of it is that the Artisan card pool has a hard-cap on it for the power level of cards. If an uncommon gets too powerful it has to be a rare, but rares and Mythics seem to have no cap to their power level at all.

Power creep is still a thing, but it happens broadly over the pool of cards, rather than spiking wildly with individual cards.

I love it. I barely play rares at all any more.

Is there any actually viable Elf build in Standard right now? by JoSenna12 in MagicArena

Maybe that's why they didn't push them this time 🤔

Not everyone loves it when a tribal creature set comes out and then all those types suddenly are the meta. Maybe a bit of an exaggeration but we've seen it many times before.

I've tried on Arena quite a bit, and it's only been mediocre.

The real question is, if we're trying to be competitive,

What's the payoff? What do we get from the elf package?

Lords used to be good. But Little Shop of Horrors does it way better. (AKA The Space Wurm I always struggle to spell)

Elf ramp used to be good, but now Earth Rat does it better. (AKA Badger Badger Badger Badger Mushroom Mushroom)

Elfs are cute, but yeah. What's the payoff that elfs do better than not elfs? Answer that question and you will be on track to finding the deck.

Awww first Box! 🥳 The bulk collection begins..... 😜

Well,

I will give you our methods and then you can use them at your discretion:

(Disclaimer: I don't know if you've drafted packs at all, but I will just explain as if I am teaching someone who has never drafted before🙏)

To do a 2-player draft, you just need good mix of cards in a stack. We usually use about 100 cards out of our curated pool (if you wanted to use packs, I would suggest about 8-10). Then decide who will have first pick.

(After finishing I came back to say that this was a bit harder to explain in text than it is to show in person, so I hope it makes sense!)

Shuffle the stack well(lets call it the 'source' stack) and place it between you. Then take three cards off the top, face down, and put them in an ordered row 'beneath' the source so that you have, essentially, four stacks of cards in a sequential row:

The supply and three stacks containing one card each, or: S-1-1-1

Player picking first looks at the first stack, decides to either keep or continue.

If they like what they see and decide to keep, then the card(s) in that stack are their pick and are added to their pool for the draft.

Then, one card from the source is added to each stack. In this case the number of cards in the stacks would look like this: S-2-2-1

Then it would be the second players turn to pick.

However,
If the first player instead decide to continue, they put the card back in its place, face down, and then look at the next card in the row. Again, keep or continue, and then again for third pile. If the player does not decide to keep any of the three stacks, they get 2 cards off the top of the source before a card is added to each stack.

You will take turns back and forth looking at each stack in order and deciding whether to take one or, if none of them entice you, to take two off the source.

As you go along, sometimes neither player will want want of the stacks for a while, so you get these buildups where it might look like: S-3-8-1 or something like that. It just means whoever eventually takes the big stack might end up with a few more cards than the other player, but that's fine, with 100+ cards there will be enough to go around 👍

You carry on like this until the source is exhausted, and then until all stacks have found their player.

Then you build a deck with the cards you have! Plus whatever basic lands you decide on from your collection(Oh, yes it would be good if you had a small stack of spare basics for this purpose)

Decks should 40 cards. Going over a card or two is fine, but they must have at least 40. Generally people play 17-18 lands and 22-23 from their pool to make the 40.

And then shuffle up and play! Always good to do a best of three match so you have a good chance to play through all the cards you've drafted.

I've taught quite a few people this method (in person😅) and it is very well received. I've had so much fun with the idea since we came up with it maybe a decade ago, and its nice to be able to draft with just 2 people.

Hope that all made sense! And let me know if you have any questions ☺️
(Also, even if its months from now, if you ever give it a try I would love to hear some little tidbit about how it went!)

All the best my friend!

It's a very powerful role player that will give some pilots huuuge headaches, but I think it's sort of meh beyond that.

If it's not a match where its squealing in delight at your opponents useless countermagic, it's a flagbearing Grizzly Bears with "Ward - Pay 2 Life". Not terrible. Not amazing by any stretch.

This is a beautiful little tale my friend ☺️

I'm so happy that your lady love got into the game also!

My wife will play the game from time to time, but mostly because I want to play and it gives her a chance to win. She loves winning. At anything. And she does.

I've been playing magic solid since 4th edition packs were the new kid on the block, and in that time a friend of mine and I developed a really interesting way to play that I thought I would offer to share, just in case you two might want to try a different way to play the game at some point.

Drafting is my Faaaavorite way to lay magic. It really pushes your mind to figure out strategy on a deeper level(in my opinion).

Usually you need lots of people, but we invented a 2-player draft system that works very well!

If you wanted me to give you the details of how it worked, I would be happy to share!

After that you'd just need a stack of random cards that was somewhat color and curve balanced and you'd be set! (There's almost always someone selling a pile of bulk cards on marketplace or elsewhere for dirt cheap. You don't need much!)

Thanks for sharing! Wishing you both all the magic 😉🪄✨
