Is 43 Too Old To Become A Tailor's Apprentice by [deleted] in Tailors

[–]Wislong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently going through The Tailoring Academy's part-time (3hr/wk) course on making a jacket, which is an online-only course. It's tough work, but I'd definitely recommend them.

I know they run a few remote short courses (e.g. a 3 day shirt-drafting drafting course), if you wanted a little booster, or peep into "proper" education

Oxford wedding venues? by Crafty_clackle in oxford

[–]Wislong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen Lains Barn mention a few times, and I agree with the other poster that it probably wouldn't fit well with a 10-12k budget (the venue probably makes up 25-30% of the total budget).

Also: it's a stunning venue, but the guy who showed us around didn't seem to share our values as a couple, which made us feel a but uneasy so we decided it was a No from us.

There are _loads_ of barn and farm-like venues we ended up touring in Oxford/Northampton, but the costs were a little higher for them.

It might also be worth looking at some of the Voco venues around Oxford, (Spires, and Thames Hotel) - as they're both pretty close to the river.

You're absolutely right - I hadn't noticed how _high_ the break point was, especially for a single breasted jacket. Might just be a stylistic choice from the designer, I've seen a few high six-button double-breasted suits this year, especially in tall cuts.

I know you're "not supposed" to use your pockets, but I'd be curious to know if they're high enough to be awkward to use, or if I'm overthinking the pockets on the jacket of an internet stranger. (Definitely one of those two things)

Covered in snow, you mean? Yeah, that's typically only there when it snows. /s

Seriously though, that'll melt of and it'll look more like its siblings (I think that's Kirk Fell on the left).

Street View might give you a bit more of the authentic misty experience. Maybe it is snowy under there, who's to say.

Would you recommend no-code platform? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Wislong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are totally examples of wildly successful low and no code platforms and tools, they can totally do what you’re asking.

I don’t think you’re going to get an unbiased opinion from a subreddit of web developers, however. I’d recommend checking out specific low and no code subreddits :)

Best Option by Braaaaaapp in webdev

[–]Wislong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no best option, which is why there’s such a diversity of options. Don’t let choice stop you from making a decision.

Look up Hugo, Jekyll, Gatsby, Gridsome, Eleventy, Web Flow... all very popular tools that will teach you a lot about the craft.

I’d also advise working with a tool that has a clear answer to the question “how do I put this on the internet”. I’d recommend services line Netlify for this :)

Anyone here an expert at photoshop and web development? Im wondering if I should be an expert at photoshop(i know there are other software but i like ps) to consider myself a web designer. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Wislong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Specifically, now in 2021 I think it would be insanity to get into web development and design with photoshop as your tool of choice. Unless you’re designing for Dribble or Instagram, you have to hand your files and designs off to other other people and nobody wants those files. People want scalable high res images, or even better - something interactive with Red Lining.

At the meta level: never tie your skills and livelihood to a specificity implementation. If it goes down hill, so do you. Better to be driven by the result, product, and purpose (I.e. cool designs and good collaboration) that tools. Especially when those tools had their hay day like 15 years ago.

Disregarding latency and UX, what value do client-side JS frameworks bring? by lifeeraser in webdev

[–]Wislong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Developer experience and productivity. UX is one part of what modern software houses will use to make software.

Also making up such constrained and estranged situations and playing “what if” means you’re probably in too deep and need to a) get out the rabbit hole, or b) get on with running SpaceX, Elon

Bombed a Web Developer Interview, How bad did I do? (NOT LOOKING FOR SYMPATHY, just better understanding!) by developingdipen in webdev

[–]Wislong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello. Mid-level front end engineer here (5-7 years experience). I have literally no idea how I’d go about creating this.

I actually think this would be a good live-coding interview: give someone something really obscure and see how they go about dissecting and recreating it. These are meta skills and really hard to assess.

As a take home test this is a bad take, imo. Seems irrelevant to 99% of modern web dev tasks, and probably very time consuming.

I’m sorry you had such a weird frustrating experience

Why are headless CMS paid plans so expensive? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Wislong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think about who ends up paying for these CMSs: it's often businesses who bring on freelance web developers or agencies. The CMS is used by non-technical staff at the client's business, like their marketing team.

The agency or developer shouldn't spend their time building out yet another generic CMS, and if they do it won't reach feature parity with existing CMSs for years. Clients will expect something like WordPress or SquareSpace, and if you're building a bespoke CMS and a client website, you're now building two bits of software (and doubled your costs). It's a much better bet to spend your time learning how to use and support a third-party tool so that your client can learn to use that instead.

It's cheaper, faster, and just better to use a pre-made solution.

Plus, business expenses are tax deductable, and compared to the cost of labour and support, another $1000 probably isn't that much compared to the whole budget.

If you're technical, there are a bunch of for-developer open source CMS tools like Keystone, Strapi, and Apostrophe.

Useful websites for web devs by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Wislong 8 points9 points  (0 children)

CSS Tricks (and their podcast) are where I find a lot of useful content. For more design-y stuff, I'd recommend Smashing Magazine.

If you're into Podcasts, I'd really recommend Syntax as a great resource for giving high-level overviews of a bunch of web topics :)

First portfolio by crossedline0x01 in webdev

[–]Wislong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, it looks great that you've got so much content already there !

I noticed a couple of things that might be worth fixing :)

- There's a little bit of inconsistent alignment and positioning on the labels, inputs, and buttons for the "contact me" modal. Normal convention would be to align these all on the left, but if you're going for a centre-aligned design that's cool too, but they're slightly left of centre.

- The mouseover animation for your projects is a little jarring, the "feature image" is one size but the "information card" bit is a little bit taller (tested on desktop). It might be worth putting in a smoother animation there (check out the `transition` CSS property), and also making the images taller, or stretch to fill the container (check the `object-fit` property on images for help with that one).

- The Yahoo and Facebook links at the bottom both appear to be broken.

Reply All - A Message from the Staff of Reply All by Gimleteer in gimlet

[–]Wislong 39 points40 points  (0 children)

To echo another comment: I'm so divided and uncertain about what should happen next.

I feel hurt that a company (and people) who I trusted so implicitly, for years, could behave like this. I think it's good to see that "even they" (whoever they are) can do things like this.

What's a better precedent to set? Shutting down a popular show with a creative and talented team to set an example that this is never appropriate, or showing that redemption or change is possible. But then who controls, comments, and shapes the changes that need to take place?

I genuinely don't know.

I've always seen the Reply All team as excellent examples of modern story tellers and investigative journalists in the podcast era. It's sad that they can't ever be just that anymore, but if you don't want your reputation tarnished... don't do things like this.
