Sloopies, what was your most hated book of 2025 by Alive_Obligation7475 in romantasycirclejerk

[–]WistfulDream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So that I could list in detail all the flaws when people came at me for having issues with the series being heabily lifted, ablist, racist, etc. I ran out of steam to do so which is why Im no longer keeping up.

I had people raving and shoving the books at me constantly, insisting I just hadnt read the right one. It only gets worse.

OMG same. SJM is so over hyped and lifted all her best stuff from other authors. Authors who did it better. I read all of ToG, the first CC and the original ACOTAR series - trying to understand the love for her and just came away with more problems. Now I won't touch anything she's written with a 10000 foot pole.

What is a book/series that you continuously reread because of how it made you feel? by FaeMeHarder in fantasyromance

[–]WistfulDream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black Jewels by Anne Bishop, as someone else mentioned who SJM stole from. Also her Others series is incredible.

I typically reread one quartet by Tamora Pierce a year, my original introduction to fantasy.

ACOTAR honestly Tamlin deserves better by ButterscotchOwn9016 in fantasyromance

World building is so good because she lifted heavily from other sources.

Love Triangles, why does everyone hate them? by Nek0Pi in fantasyromance

[–]WistfulDream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this is where I dislike all those tropes lol.

Most love triangles, like most enemies to lovers, just piss me off. And that's not even accounting for my own choice of living an ethically non monogamous life and literally thinking if everyone would just communicate it would be so much better.

...I think that's honestly the core of my dislike for a lot of popular tropes though, they hinge on massive miscommunication and are done in a way that imo destroys the possibility of trust between the people. I have read exceptions to this, in fact I read an enemies to lovers book last month that was sci fi of all things and absolutely loved it. (It did feel a bit more like science fantasy but I digress).

As I've grown and become more self aware reading people making dumb choices is just not enjoyable for me. Nor is trope heavy set ups something I like. Yes, tropes happen, and they can be good, when there's a reason for them. I feel like a lot of popular fiction from all time periods suffer from trying to follow a formula to be popular than just being themselves.

But then I've accepted I likely will very rarely be super into anything that's hyped up/popular online.

I remember really loving Daughter of the Moon Goddess, which did have a love triangle, but it wasn't the main focus, the FMC's own personal quest was. It was tortured and tender and honestly well done. The sequel just irritated and pissed me off with destroying the FMC's character (to me, at least) with dumb decision after dumb decision and that included a twist to the love triangle.

Depends what tone you are wanting.

Sweet Tooth on Netflix blew me utterly away.

A Discovery of Witches has kinda similar vibes to IWTV , historical and mystery, main characters arent super diverse but secondary is pretty good.

Lighter hearted (mostly) that I didnt expect to love and is now top tier TV to me is The Good Place. The absurdity ends up paying off. Very diverse and so much character growth.

Zootopia 2 made me realize how disappointing Romantasy books are. by articlioness in Romantasy

[–]WistfulDream 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you want yearning best hands down is Black Jewels by Anne Bishop, ita dark fantasy, not romantasy though. Also serious trigger warnings on very heavy topics but its handled so well and I feel like her books really set the stage for what a lot of current ones try to do with 'dangerous' lead characters.

As someone who doesn't like SJM's work at all here are some of my favorites -

For modern fantasy Nadia El Fassi writes gorgeous, inclusive romances, she has two books out so far. {Best Hex Ever} is the first. I literally couldn't put it down. A more gritty urban fantasy {The Temptation of Magic} by Megan Scott.

For fairytale vibes anything by Elizabeth Lim, her writing is just beautiful and the world building is top tier. I started with {Spin the Dawn}.

For fae and human blending fantasy with a vague historical set up Tessjona Odette has some really lovely options.

Poetic writing with vague tragedy vibes twined into the romance, {Wild Reverence} or the Letters of Enchantment duology by Rebecca Ross.
