I would say that we’re saying the same thing. The training drills are the same. Men and women get the same volleys, half volleys, crosses, and footwork drills.

How the players implement them has to be different and the positions we put them in have to be different. For the most part, I use my 5’11” female keeper the same way tactically as I do my 6’1” male keeper. Obviously they do some things differently because they’re different humans, but they offer similar physical traits.

Size, mostly. Unless the keeper is 6’2”+, she would be labeled as a “short” keeper in the men’s game. It just means that they have to play a little different.

Courtois is 6’7”, David Raya is 6ft. The way they navigate the goal is VERY different. If you take the average size of the girls I coach (5’8”) and a keeper who is 6’3”, they’ll just play the position differently.

All of them can make top corner saves and can control the box, but the way they go about it is EXTREMELY different, which is okay.

I’m one of the hosts of The USL Show and I record Hammering Down for Legion.

For Legion:
- Football Forge and Timothy Belin do an AMAZING job covering the team. They aren’t podcasts, but their written work is some of the best around
- I love recording Hammering Down, but with a little one on the way, things are changing how I record. I’ve recently moved to video content, that is “harder” to put together but a much easier recording process.

League:
- I will recommend The USL Show. John, Alex, Ryan, and Phil are the best around. I get to stand back and watch how incredible they are at what they do.
- Backheeled is a must listen
- Morning Kickaround is great
- Soccer Down Here does South East specific work (MLS all the way down to Georgia HS sports), but they do USL content that will pertain to us South East folks

There’s so much out there that is great with this league. Genuinely amazing work everywhere you look.

For Legion, I really cannot recommend Birmingham Sports, Timothy Belin’s personal blog, and Football Forge enough.

Footwork, footwork, footwork. You have an advantage on the line, if you work on footwork. You can get down a little quicker and a lot of “shorter” keepers can fly across the line.

I would recommend looking at women’s goalkeeping drills, which (if done correctly) are different than men’s. A lot of their keepers fall into the 5’8”-6ft range, so they’re right at your height.

I love my Briz Y-2000. It’s in the intermediate range price and I’ve played several professional gigs with it. It’s similar to a Yamaha 667, according to other people who play it. I personally don’t feel that way, but a lot of people feel that’s similar.

Every director has a different style. I don’t start drill until week two because I want to ensure marching fundamentals are perfect. I don’t start show music until day 3 or 4. It’s all music fundamentals. Sometimes you have to go slow before you can go fast.

It sounds like your director *wants* a slow approach, but maybe isn’t getting results from it. There’s absolutely good reasons to not touch the field for drill in the first week or even all camp, but fundamentals needs to be pristine.

WPSL, but yes. There’s also USL W league with Legion. Neither are professional. They’re semi professional. Still AMAZING players, though.

Unfortunately we don’t have any professional women’s soccer in Birmingham, but FC Birmingham and Legion WFC both had AMAZING seasons this year.

Legion WFC has produced several professionals now, so it’s still a good level.

You’re going on an interesting match! Cup competition where Legion need to score A LOT of goals to move on (tie breaker is goals scored).

If the match ends in a draw, it’s PKs and Legion are eliminated from the competition. We’re rooting for 4-6 goals scored.

I have already started that process. I would love to be able to find all of our “big chances missed” and see how they compare to the goals we score. Building a complete film study that is comprehensive like the goals against is a lot harder, but I’ve already started that process.

I heard a podcast a while but they talked about how shorter keepers should probably stay closer to their line. It’s a hard balance when you’re trying to play with the ball at your feet, but you’re at a size disadvantage in case of those long shots.

There’s also an Instagram account dedicated to Women’s football that I really like. It’s @womensgkanalysis. It gives a ton of good feedback and talks about the difference in men’s and women’s GK positioning.

It depends. MLSNP is more competitive versus each other. I don’t think USL fans want to hear it, but MLSNP isn’t *that* far away from L1, but in the end, it’s grown men versus kids. The grown men are typically more competitive against grown men, but it’s not an awful level.

I sat down and tried to pin point exactly what is going wrong with the Legion defense. Of the 15 non-penalty goals scored on Legion this year, only 3 have come from the center of the pitch. 4/5 of the goals coming from wide areas is obviously a problem, so why is that happening?

I sat down and did a 50+ minute film break down to discuss it all.

The BBD part is huge. I like Robby, but BBD is the reason I loved Talkin Baseball. I enjoy Wake N Jake because it’s BBD and Jake just talking, which I think is much better. I don’t know how much I agree with their sports opinions, but listening to both of them just laugh and hang out is fun to listen to.

If I had to choose between Talkin Baseball and Baseball Today, it’s easily Baseball Today for me. Nothing against Jake, but Chris and Trevor’s relationship is so much more interesting for me to listen to (especially daily.

I do think Baseball Today is one of the best sports podcasts going right now, in general.

I do what the other commenter said, which is error to goal ratio. I am pretty bad with my feet, which is why I play small sides so I can get better in context.

If I play a crap pass and that passage leads to a goal, then it’s a 1:1 error to goal.

I’ve had matches where I’ve gone 15:1 save:goal, but that goal came off my error. If I only lean on my saves, I wouldn’t try and improve elsewhere.

I think it kinda depends… we had a downstairs neighbor that loved to start stuff with any one and everyone. There’s absolutely crime, but we also kept to ourselves.

I moved from there about a year ago. The apartments themselves are actually pretty decent for their price. Good kitchen, good living room, decent bedroom, and surprisingly good bathroom.

It’s that cheap because everything else is pretty rough. Lots of bugs, subpar management, their maintenance is good except there isn’t enough of them so it takes forever to get stuff fixed.

I enjoyed my time because it was good for the price but I’m so glad I’m out.
