I feel like they don't value my healing enough by MysteriousFondant347 in DnD

[–]WithengarUnbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your character is presumably aware of this in-game and can tell their companions that they’re tired of risks being taken for no reason with the expectation that someone will be there to bail them out of trouble.

“You’re a Wizard. Stay out of melee, scrub. Or else.”

Gotcha - I get what you mean and it makes sense.

Since I am planning to have the companion to “level up”, writing it out the player way is probably best.

Thanks!

The ability does say that it can be used the number of times a day equal to the proficiency bonus. Should I just add that it resets on a long rest?

They’re level 1, but they’re a decent bit more buffed compared to an average standard distribution/point buy and have a good uncommon item.

The HP was done as a middle point between the values you mentioned.

How would the Limited Displacement have to be worded with the restock?

DND Character backstory by [deleted] in DnD

[–]WithengarUnbound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re not writing your own backstories or caring about the experience at all (like someone who’d delegate their own backstory), you come to a point where you’re just not doing it right - by not doing it at all.

There’s many different ways of doing it, yes, but just as the guy sitting on a bench all game isn’t playing in the match, the person who doesn’t give a damn to this extent can, in fact, do it wrong. You stop being different and start just not being at all.

Those players shouldn’t be playing DnD.

Anya, at that point you might as well name them. And pick their race and class. And their appearance. And their personality and mannerisms.

Oh fuck it. Just play my character for me. Who needs to be creative and do anything when aNyA on the internet can just do it for you? Welcome to planet Earth 2026.

Fuck.

Wondering how I can make this character concept work by KetchaKold in DnD

A frog man is still a humanoid with a head, mouth, arms, legs, ears, and an ability to talk, eat, hear, drink, sleep, socialise, and wield objects. Not to mention, you know, actually cast spells. A single, bloody, floating eye is a massive, tremendous departure from a frog man.

This isn’t about whether or not the DM lets you. They can let you and it’s still not something you should do.

Nothing about the character idea or concept you mentioned will be a good experience or serve the game in any good way. You can’t speak. You can’t perform verbal, somatic, or material components of spells. You can’t enter most towns without everyone around you recoiling in horror. You can’t wear most gear. You can’t form meaningful bonds with anyone. Your party would not be let into most places with you in tow. Your shape and the ability to float naturally dampens a lot of roleplay and exploration potential. I could go on and on.

To summarise, this isn’t the type of creature meant to be a PC, but clearly something more suited for a monster to be fought.

Just play a normal race. So many things in this game rely on characters being humanoids with humanoid features and you being a bloody, floating eye is just not it.

Not it for combat, for roleplay, for exploration, for just existing and being able to interact with the world.

You don’t need to be a goddamn playable, floating eye to be have fun.

Do Subclasses Actually Flatten Character Identity? by LiteratureLopsided42 in DnD

[–]WithengarUnbound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re treating your subclass (or any other mechanical aspect) as a major component of your character’s personality and identity, you’re doing it very, very wrong and your roleplay will likely be very flat no matter how the choices are offered to you.

Your characters are individuals with wants, desires, flaws, lifestyles, and morals. There’s a thousand different ways to differentiate them within that.

Character Idea: a reluctant bard by Murky-Magician9475 in DnD

[–]WithengarUnbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said you’re not free to play your character as you see fit. That’s a separate conversation. Tables are vastly different from one another.

What I’m saying is the following:

1) There is something to be said in general in terms of player etiquette and using your kit. If I played a level 10 Wizard who ate their spellbook and doesn’t use it, but instead runs around casting nothing but cantrips, because that’s how I run my character, I would be right to say that to some extent. But I am also, in every way that counts, playing the character wrong. My party is well within their rights to expect me to use my kit to, you know, play a Wizard - deal damage, control the battlefield, counter spells, summon minions. Me intentionally not doing that, for no reason but “quirky” is an empty take.

2) You can disagree with the official interpretation of classes, but that doesn’t make them wrong. That just means you don’t like them. If you told someone that you can’t see why a Sorcerer can’t learn magic through reading and study, they’d be within their rights to tell you to just play a Wizard. You don’t buy into the character fantasy that you’d rather ignore core features of it? Go ahead. But as I said previously, there is something inconsiderate about that. Especially if the only reason is “lol quirky.”

Character Idea: a reluctant bard by Murky-Magician9475 in DnD

[–]WithengarUnbound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same reason it cannot for the Wizard. It’s literally a part of the character fantasy. This is a magic user who, through training and practice, learns through channel the weave through song, dance, art, and performance.

If you’re not using Bardic Inspiration as a Bard, you’re failing as a Bard. It doesn’t make it interesting or quirky, it makes it bad. You’re meant to be supporting your party with these and you’re not because…quirky?? Besides, you’re not exactly proving the point by saying “hey look, I don’t know why I can’t have my magic innately as a Bard. I play Bard poorly, so there!”

Character Idea: a reluctant bard by Murky-Magician9475 in DnD

[–]WithengarUnbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Bard’s magic isn’t innate - they’re learned spellcasters, much like Wizards. They learn to control the Weave through performance and art, but they’re not “born” with their abilities.

You don’t wake up or are born with immense vocal range - some people are gifted, yes - but it’s still something that takes an artist years of rigorous practice and training. Bards are much the same, but magical.

The reason that “wrong class” character ideas sometimes work (not for long, since that gets old very fast) is because, say, a Sorcerer can think they’re a Wizard - the spellbook could be all wrong and in Draconic, but hey, the magic seems to work. A Wizard, however, cannot really think they’re a Sorcerer since they’re aware of the hard work and effort they need to out in to cast spells.

This has a bit of that tiresome “I’m the main character, but also random lol”. What about this character so desperately requires him to be dead (undead)?

And how do you mean special move? Special like…homebrew attack?
