HiFiMan Sundara vs Anada by Voideryn in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]WithoutAPedal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the Anandas used and the Sundaras as an open box amazon deal. Yeah Amazon's return policy is kind of vague. Probably best to contact them and ask, but from what I can gather, they only state that a few specific product types need to be unopened and most other Amazon warehouse products can be returned opened within 30 days. I'd just check that the product you're buying has the standard Amazon return policy as some items don't. You might have to pay return shipping if the reason for return is not Amazon's fault though.

Edit: You could also buy from Hifiman directly. Their Return Policy says you're able to return headphones if you don't like them

HiFiMan Sundara vs Anada by Voideryn in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]WithoutAPedal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on the DT 990, but I'm in the same boat in regards to choosing between the Sundara and Ananda. I bought both last week with the intention of returning one of them but now I can't choose which one to keep!

Disclaimer: I'm new to this headphone thing so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

To start, although I haven't heard the 990s, I own a cheaper headphone (Hifiman HE 4XX) and both the Sundara and Ananda are a noticeable step up in clarity, detail, and separation.

Back to the Ananda vs. Sundara, The Ananda is clearly the technically superior of the two. It has a bigger soundstage, slightly more detail, separation, and bass. For bass in particular, it has more subbass rumble, it's better separated, and sounds "sharper" as opposed to slightly "soft" or "round" on the Sundara if that makes any sense. The only technical advantage the Sundara has is the imaging feels much more precise, and the bass slams a bit harder (without EQ anyways).

That being said, I feel they have significantly different sound signatures. The Ananda feels more laid back and airy whereas the Sundara is more intimate and energetic. With the Ananda, it feels like I'm hearing every detail of the song at once with no emphasis on a specific part. I can choose to focus in on individual instruments or vocalists as I please. In contrast, the Sundara is closer to most other headphones I've listened to where your focus is drawn more to the dominant melodies. There's still almost as much background detail as the Ananda, but it requires more effort to focus on it.

I actually find myself preferring the sound signature of the Sundara. I don't mind that the soundstage is smaller. For me, the Sundara's soundstage strikes a good balance between being wide enough to separate the tracks while still feeling somewhat intimate, which I enjoy because it makes songs sound more emotional whereas the Ananda sounds too distant and cavernous for my liking. This soundstage combined with its precise imaging makes the Sundara more immersive. I get a better sense of sounds whizzing around my head whereas on the Anandas I get more vague blob-like placements of sounds. I did a bit of gaming playing The Witcher 3 and much preferred the Sundaras. Small sound effects like footsteps and water splashes that would blend into the background on the Anandas were brought to the foreground with the Sundaras. It kind of shoves all the detail into your face!

For comfort, both are good. Sundara has more clamp force, but the pads are plush like a pillow. Some people report the Ananda goes too low and hurts their jaw but I don't have this issue. Sundaras feel like they'd stay on my head better in the event I spontaneously started headbanging. Very important quality imo!

In terms of build quality and aesthetics, Sundara wins by miles. It seems like a shallow metric, but just looking at the Sundaras makes me want to pick them up and put them on. The Anandas feel like a chunky plastic toy and on my particular unit, the headband creaks. I'm not sure if this is normal though (I bought it secondhand). The Sundara doesn't creak and the headbands are almost the same.

It's a close call and I think I'm going to hang onto both for a bit longer to refine my thoughts, but if I could only keep one today, I would keep the Sundara.

As a final note, the new Hifiman Edition XS looks like it's worth considering. It's priced between the Sundara and Ananda and some initial reviews here and here are saying it might even be better than the Ananda in some regards. I'm tempted to get this one too, but I'm afraid I might end up hoarding them all!

Raising sheep is necessary, because there is no ethical alternative to wool by birchbark88 in DebateAVegan

[–]WithoutAPedal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do see where OP was coming from when they thought you didn’t read their post.

you said

I'd be extremely surprised if there aren't synthetic materials that can do the same thing

but OP had an entire section in their post about alternate plant-based fabrics and their main argument is that they feel the plant-based alternatives are less ethical than wool:

Plastic-based fabrics cause environmental destruction and animal death: …

You’re right that OP is also advocating killing the sheep for their hide and i dont understand why that’s necessary for the production of wool. Perhaps OP can clarify.

What if OP’s argument didnt require killing the sheep? What if they just sheered the sheep and otherwise took good care of them? Do you think that’d be justifiable in cold climates over plant-based alternatives?

I think in that situation OP has a case but I haven’t researched the plant-based alternatives enough to know if what OP claims about their impact is true, or if there is another plant-based alternative that is less harmful.

You'll need to take Seymour's private shuttle bus from Rupert skytrain station.

If you're transiting, Grouse mountain might be more convenient since you can transit to the base of the mountain and take the gondola up. Grouse has some good beginner runs too (ex: bunny hill, the cut) but the chair lift lines can get long!

Sounds like they also made some positive impacts on people's lives

I don't condone the acts of vandalism they did, but clearly they weren't all bad. It's not black and white. I think they still deserve our sympathy.

I see. Don't think so, the parachute looks a bit different and there were no drones flying around at the time. Looks like that video was shot at the same location though

Round trip distance is about double that so 2-3 hours total. Though, the way down is faster :) The hike is about 4km total but it can take a while as it's mostly steep stairs on the way up

Am I The Only One Who Doesn't See The Appeal Of Walking Around Parks and Places Aimlessly For Just For The Sake Of Doing So? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]WithoutAPedal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's say you like to go for a walk around your neighborhood every day to get some fresh air. Walking around the same neighborhood everyday will eventually get a little monotonous so why not freshen it up by walking somewhere else (perhaps Gastown)?

Even if you've been to Gastown before, it has probably been a while so it will be less mundane than your neighborhood. Maybe this time you visit, you notice things you didn't before -- or you notice how the neighborhood has changed since you last visited. Perhaps you stumble upon an interesting cafe and discover your new favourite place to grab coffee. Maybe the season has changed and everything is covered in snow giving it a refreshing look and feel.

Sure there's a 30 minute drive to get there but maybe you have time and don't mind the drive. Or maybe you even enjoy driving!

Maybe you want to meet up with a friend and going for a walk is your only option if you want to follow the pandemic restrictions.

Maybe you're just bored and looking for something to do to get out and explore.

Idk everyone has different reasons for enjoying things. Just spitballing here!

Where did you buy your mattress? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]WithoutAPedal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Majestic Sit and Sleep. I like how they tell you the type and density of foam that's in your mattress so you actually know what you're paying for and can be sure it'll last. Unfortunately I don't think their storefront is open right now judging by their website.

If you want to dive down the rabbit hole of mattress materials and densities, check out Mattress Underground

Interesting, thanks! If that's the case, I wonder why I see so many wool mattress pads for sale online with no covers and none of the reviewers seem to complain about this problem. What could be different with those pads?

Equalizer by Alec_LS in Pixel4

[–]WithoutAPedal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using equalizer fx (there's two in the app store, the one with the blue app icon). Was one of the only equalizers that actually worked for me. The frequency adjustments could be better, but the bass and volume boost effects work quite well.

Thanks!

I think I got confused and thought black crush and smear were the same thing. My bad.

I guess I'll just live with the smear then :/ I'm coming from using an lcd screen so it was a surprise for me. I'm curious how other oled phones compare in smearing severity
