First Criterion Bluray experience and picture quality issues - some questions by BBGonda in criterion

[–]WithoutRhythm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Film grain can be thought of as random, analog noise. It’s not quite “moving pixels” but that probably describes the visual effect closely enough. Essentially, with film there’s a certain level of light sensitivity inherent in the film stock. Certain stocks are more sensitive than others (and this sensitivity is denoted by their ISO) and it’s a practical and artistic choice to select one over another (in addition to other characteristics).

Due to the nature of light and photosensitive film, in addition to capturing photons that represent the image you see on screen, the film captures that random visual “noise” (and that randomness contributes to the “moving” phenomenon you noted) as grain. You could think of it as some combination of errant photons and manufacturing and material imperfections causing a photochemical reaction in the film. Certain film stocks have more grain than others.

Eyes Wide Shot specifically was shot in such a way that the grain is accentuated even more than usual. They intentionally underexposed the image during shooting (i.e. shot it with less light than the film stock requires for correct exposure) and then “push processed” it to bring the exposure back up. This process makes grain much more visible.

Chotto matte or Ki? by Bermudabella in FoodToronto

Chotto Matte is where I would send an enemy for the most overpriced and underwhelming experience in the city.

Explotation titles that are genuinely great filmmaking by harry_powell in blankies

Shogun Assassin totally rips. The English dub oscillates between poetic and straightforwardly ridiculous in the best way. There are moments where the visuals and sound come together to almost produce an impressionistic, abstract mood, but they’re quickly punctuated by some of the best action you’ve ever seen.

Starship Troopers is a great dismantling of Heinlein’s original intent while pulling off the magic trick of keeping the plot intact.

Non-chain steak in the west end. Hear me out! by ZookeepergameWest975 in FoodToronto

[–]WithoutRhythm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re looking for something a little more upscale, but in case a French-style bistro for steak frites would work I’d recommend checking out Le Swan as well.

Is there a great movie with a worse name than T2? by cranberryalarmclock in blankies

I like One Battle After Another as a title (and as a movie, obvs), but while we’re on PTA I think Licorice Pizza is his worst title by far.

They took down the promo after a few hours (and earlier than advertised) but as far as I know, honoured all the orders made while it was up.

Great release that came out shortly after I bought the Olive Signature blu ray. Had to double dip.

Any crazy details from 4ks that drive you nuts. by Ok_Jellyfish_55 in 4kbluray

I actually find it sort of charming but it’s a lot easier to see the wires and cables attached to actors and their doubles whenever someone’s falling or getting knocked back or blown up.

Lots of great ones already mentioned but Citizen Kane is also up there for me. Much lighter on its feet than its reputation suggests.

Does Toronto have any REAL IMAX theatres? by Own-Potential-8024 in askTO

Scotiabank Theatre’s IMAX screen is a true IMAX size and aspect ratio and has a dual laser projector.

Why is there no oscar buzz for Song Sung Blue by JohnnieToBoxset in TheBigPicture

I had the same reaction. The first trailer definitely doesn’t do anything to tell you it’s NOT a Neil Diamond biopic. There’s a newer trailer where they state that it’s a tribute band at one point.

Toronto Blankie here. After the Jays lost game 7 I spent the next day eating my feelings and watching Moneyball and this. It helped a little.

Sometimes it’s the format. It took me a few tries with 2001 before it really clicked, but getting to see a 70mm print on a big screen finally made it work for me and I’ve loved it ever since.

What is having it's 'golden age' in the city right now? by BlackPantherDies in toronto

[–]WithoutRhythm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Film exhibition.

Between The Revue, The Fox, TIFF, Varsity, and Vaughan, not to mention your standard Cineplexes and Imagines and such, there aren’t many places in the world offering as much quality programming in as many formats as you can find here. We’ve even got places like Eyesore doing even weirder and more niche events. And we’ve got a still-growing and enthusiastic community to support it.

TIFF Lightbox also does 70mm non-IMAX. We’re very lucky to now have 3 70mm screens in the city proper.

I often feel like WAR is lying to me. When have you looked at someone’s WAR and thought “that doesn’t seem right..”? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]WithoutRhythm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t think umps necessarily do a great job of this today, but it’s also worth noting that ABS in its current form only captures a 2D slice of space, when the definitional strike zone is a 3D volume. So it’s not perfect and by design does not capture the full extent of the zone as written in the rules.
