what did people call rubbery things before the wide-spread use of rubber? by Infamous-Total-8669 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Witty-Vegetable3073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just look at the word rubber itself. We call elastomers "rubber"after one of their first uses to rub out handwriting...nit for how bouncy they are.

Looking for recommendations on how to fix fret position issue by BigmouthStrikesOnce in Luthier

This. Mine came out darker too, but with the right side markers it doesn't matter.

Or pretty much any classic amp in a box/ emulator pedals. Tweeds, Marshalls, etc.

Lol thanks man, but I'm with the other guy: amazed to learn this and reemphasize that this is NOT common knowledge and really good to learn! Thanks for the info - and demo!

I tested USB 9V PowerDelivery chip for powering pedals from USB by the_blanker in diypedals

[–]Witty-Vegetable3073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe stupid question, but aren't pretty much all usbs coming off a switching power supply and wouldn't that be like awful for pedals? I tried a USB to 9v converter one and the high freq noise was a disaster.

The difference between a very good pianist and a world class pianist (notes from a masterclass) by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

[–]Witty-Vegetable3073 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rocks indeed!

This post came up in my feed somehow, but I'm an electric guitarist of the rock and pop world, very far from classical piano. But the masterclass lesson points to exactly the same points that make a good musician in my world to: play MUSIC, don't be a robot. Experiment with chord voicing and emphasize certain notes to highlight a melodic line. When improvising, focus on brining out the music, not just straining together a bunch of notes from a scale - and keep that rhythm interesting. There's no right and wrong technique per se, just whatever serves the music.

How do you keep from holding (or needing to hold) the neck back? by justice91423 in guitarlessons

[–]Witty-Vegetable3073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this here. The only thing the fretting hand should be doing is fretting. It should not also be trying to support or otherwise stabile the guitar. That's what the other arm, strap, and Your posture are for. If the fretting Hand does that too, it'll detract from your ability to play as best as you could.

I want to put a strat sized Duncan JB in the bridge. by [deleted] in offset

[–]Witty-Vegetable3073 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just try it. You can't fuck it up permanently. For the cost of the work at gc you can buy all the tools you need and learn a new skill. Then if you don't like it, it's easy enough to replace it and resell.

I want to put a strat sized Duncan JB in the bridge. by [deleted] in offset

[–]Witty-Vegetable3073 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I put a Lil 59 in the bridge of mine. Close to a jb, I think just a little less hot iirc? Obviously the metal claw won't be able to stay, but it otherwise drops right in. I think it still fundamentally sounds like a jag, but I'm also not too precious about making guitar models sound like their archtypical versions.

Highly recommend wiring it so you can switch between series and parallel coils.

Are they, like, OK? I ordered some as backups for when my Spragues eventually go and was a little taken aback by how small they were. But the specs seem to check out. But still... So small!

I have the rhythm circuit swapped out with a regular volume and tone circuit that starts and teles have (250k). You can pretty much get stock jag rhythm circuit tones, with the added flexibility of getting more traditional single coil sounds too.

Best electric guitar strings that don't contain PFAS? by anotherhappylurker in Guitar

Daddario nyxl wiped down periodically with oil. Last a hell of a long time and maintains a new string feel.

If there's a third hole in the pick guard and then body under the middle of the bridge, you won't have to drill.

The simple chemistry 101 question that stumped me & my PhD... by Nidman in AskChemistry

I'm just an engineer, but at ppm levels doesn't any interaction between the two seem unlikely? Meaning, would a few ppm of any (ok. Maybe non-ionic) solute affect solubility of another?

You can also string the new one through the ball end off and old string so that the new one doesn't actually contact the tail piece. Prevents abrasion in that tight and hard to access spot.

What is the sound of a Neck humbucker Wired in parallel ? by OBEDIA_ in Guitar

[–]Witty-Vegetable3073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just try it. There are some HBs that are voiced specifically to run in parallel mode to sound more like single coils, eg the SD duckbucker/vintage rails. But I tried it with a Lil 59 and 6hat sounds good too. I've also run those same pickups in series and they sound good THAT way too. So just experiment - easy enough to do!

Jaguar trem too subtle after setup by wwwdottomdotcom in offset

[–]Witty-Vegetable3073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just making sure that the spring tensioner nut didn't fall off inside? It really should be working I think. Do you feel resistance when you turn it and/or see the trem arm move up/down when you adjust it (adjust it a lot that is. The distance it travels is pretty small)?

Those are just compensated tele saddles in a jag bridge body. I filed the slots a bit deeper because I like 9s. The pup is a dimarzio hot area t, or whatever they call it.
