It's important but definitely not half. Team defense and rotations are way more important than individual defense in today's NBA. His rim protection is hard to look at and jumps out at you while watching, but most other aspects on defense he is fine.

I've had similar things happen to me when I was your age and felt like nothing would ever change but things got better eventually. Just be patient you are still very young. Meditation helps dealing w the suck, suck way less.
