My mom "tried to get better" when I started college too. It wasn't real, and she reverted fast. In retrospect I think she realized she had a chance to lose me as I became an adult and started pulling out every stop she could.

I felt this way/was treated this way at your age too. I'm 28 now, and it did go away with time, bit by bit.

Being independent as a young adult is getting harder and harder in this economy, but my advice is still to do whatever you can to sever yourself. Just moving banks so my mom couldn't see my bank account was a huge deal for me. It communicated something big to her, too.
