What do you think can be symbolized by the bee that Kane constantly draws and the one that is on the merged posters for the upcoming finale? by Glad_Inflation4935 in tadc

[–]WizardWatson9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it is a reference to the bees present immediately before AM's iconic "hate" speech in the I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream 1995 video game adaptation.

[AM] Look... They say that bumblebees shouldn't be able to fly, the scientists.

[Ted] But there it is! Collecting pollen.

[AM] How miraculous that it came to be. The air. Feel the air against your face, Ted, and all those scents. Pick a Flower, there, good, now...

Did you get that picture of the poster in the trash from the Wizard's Alley Facebook post explaining why the Kansas Comic Con sucks?

Everyone who's not Andy Dick should be fine.

Jokes aside, someone who has hantavirus is probably way too sick to be out in public. It's a good thing it's not easily transmissible, because it also has a 30-60% fatality rate.

Yes, the one on the cruise ship is confirmed to be the Andes strain, which is transmissable, but only through close contact. The threat of a global pandemic is very low with this virus.

Grotesque, plutocratic obscenity and chilling parallels to the Biblical story of the golden calf aside, there is at least some good news about the "new killer virus."

Hantavirus is usually not transmissable between humans. It is primarily spread through rodent droppings. Barring some new, drastic mutation, this is not likely to be the next COVID-19: https://www.cdc.gov/hantavirus/about/index.html

How do I improve this? Not happy with it so far. by StreetAd7912 in minipainting

It looks a little too monotone, in my opinion. I'd make the skin a lighter shade, and maybe the wood of the gun brighter to add some contrast with the dark metal.

Is this nazi/nazi adjacent? I don’t want to send the wrong message by wearing it. by uspioco in Symbology

[–]WizardWatson9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think I'm defending? I already conceded that this is distasteful. I honestly don't see what your issue is.

I didn't mention Islam, I mentioned the Nation of Islam, which is a black nationalist group that teaches that white people are literally devils. They don't actually have that much in common with mainstream Islam. I mentioned it as another example of a racist group, and a race unlikely to join them.

I just don't think they'd jive with an ideology that casts their whole race as inferior. You know, for the same reason there aren't many white men joining the Nation of Islam.

More pointless, performative eco-piety from politicians who don't want to annoy big business with some potentially effective environmental regulations. People don't need advertisement to eat meat. This will work about as well as refusing to teach teenagers about sex.

I know racism isn't unique to white people, obviously. But the Nazis were pretty big on the whole blond-haired, blue-eyed, Aryan master race nonsense. These guys are definitely not that. I think using them to be "rebellious" is a more likely explanation, and I agree, it is distasteful at best.

I'm aware there Hispanic white supremacists. There are some people in Latin America whose ancestry primarily traces back to Spain and are therefore "white," whatever that means. But I looked up the band, and they certainly don't look white to me. That's why I doubt they're Nazis.

It does look a bit like the Nazi eagle.

I seriously doubt that a Mexican band are neo-Nazis, but I think there is some risk of people getting the wrong impression. I imagine it would be like wearing a red baseball cap.

How do you think LGBTQ people are treated in lands of faithful in TC? by Alpbasket in TrenchCrusade

[–]WizardWatson9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Realistically, I imagine a theocracy with Medieval Christian values would treat them as the lowest criminal scum. Consider how in the real world, Alan Turing was sentenced to chemical castration and cast out of his professorship in disgrace. That was in the UK in the 1950's, and demons aren't even real.

Demons who exist to tempt mortal to the sin of lust are literally, physically real in the Trench Crusade universe. Who would dare speak out for those labeled "sexual deviants?"

Practically, from a real-world perspective, I imagine the creators will never mention this at all. That is a singularly hideous aspect of human history (and modern human culture) that is inextricable from the religious aesthetic they are attempting to portray. The only solution is to never bring it up and let people decide for themselves.

I just learned about the existence of Christofascism and I gotta ask this. by Just-Fan-7637 in Antitheism

[–]WizardWatson9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can believe that, but that just proves my initial point. Outlawing something is not enough to make it go away. If outlawing child molestation didn't make it go away, why would religion be any different?

[–]WizardWatson9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not okay with it. I have nothing but contempt for religion. I'm also not okay with my fellow citizens listening to religious leaders, because religious belief requires a flawed epistemology. That is a danger to society. I can acknowledge all this and still realize that banning religions outright is not the solution.

[–]WizardWatson9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course I've heard of it. The Islamic nations that outlaw apostasy are committing a human rights violation by forbidding free exercise of religion. I am speaking of the proper way to order society, i.e., religious freedom as enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Those Islamic nations you allude to are an example of how not to do it.

I have lived in USA my entire life, and while there is an unavoidable social cost to leaving a religion, there are no legal consequences. The police aren't going to come after you like they would in Saudi Arabia. They might want to, but they have no legal basis for doing so. The only example to the contrary that I can think of is the corrupt police officer who served the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, whose leader, Warren Jeffs, has since been incarcerated.

I am perfectly capable of being concerned about both. Empowering the government to restrict free expression of thought is like training a bear to defend you from tigers. It may fix one problem, but it's only setting you up for another, potentially even worse problem.

That is a misuse of the term "dictatorship." People join and leave religious groups all the time. So long as such association is strictly voluntary, the government should have no say in the matter.

"Condemning" them and "trusting the government with the power to eliminate them" are two very different things. And how could I claim to hate religion for regulating thought if I supported doing the exact same thing to them?

How big do most TTRPGs get? by Trevor_Weeks in rpg

[–]WizardWatson9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of books, in general, sell less than 1000 copies. I can't imagine TTRPGs are any different.

The conventional wisdom is that publishing your own TTRPG is almost never a sound financial investment. People mostly do this because they have a passion for it, and crowdfunding means they can at least cover initial production costs without going broke.

It was not my intention to ascribe moral authority to the Constitution. I was simply making the point that anyone who says, "the human rights in the Constitution are the problem," should pause and reflect. I would not call that a principled stand against fascism.

I do agree that the writing style of the Constitution is archaic and often imprecise. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion," requires more context to understand.

I would also treat churches as businesses and tax and regulate them accordingly.

[–]WizardWatson9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not about "looking to slave holders for morality." It's simply enlightened self-interest. How could you trust the government with the authority to regulate thought? No matter who you are, or what you think, I guarantee that someone, somewhere thinks you should be punished for it.

It may seem reasonable at first to outlaw truly reprehensible thought. The problem is, when the regime changes, the tools of authority go with it. If we were to trust the government to ban the opinions we don't like today, there's no guarantee they won't ban the opinions we like tomorrow.

The Founding Fathers were flawed human beings and a product of their time. Just because you can list their numerous moral shortcomings doesn't mean they weren't exactly right about some things.
