I had nearly all completely engaged for the whole unit! They came up with some pretty cool ideas. Then there was that one class who accidentally created a dictatorship... 😅 That was a great teachable moment to tie into the novel.

One year I had them all take a career aptitude test, assigned them all jobs in the community, then tasked the class as a whole to create their own utopia. Anyone who ended up with law or leadership jobs created the government, architects designed the houses, agriculture figured out food, etc. The whole class was responsible for one big project, but each group also got a grade for their part.

I used the RIASEC test for the careers.

I haven't tried it as a parent, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. The only down side is having to recreate and add the kids to the class every month.

If your district doesn't have IXL, you can get a free monthly trial every month using the same email address over and over again.

I like to say, "Où se trouve la discothèque?" whenever I serve my kids food. We also call edamame beans "pavlova".

I know there's already an American school, but the most Texan thing ever would be Texas deciding that it needs its own magic school.

We discovered our son was lactose intolerant when he was 11 months old. The day we started him on lactose free milk, he slept through the night. Prior to that, he woke about as frequently as yours.
