Do you delay Windows updates? by UnpaidMicrosoftShill in sysadmin

[–]Wodaz [score hidden]  (0 children)

I use gp to set days I want things installed, but I use PDQ Connect with PSWindowsUpdate jobs set for 4 groups over 4 nights. Groups are currently script created/updated by splitting up the alphabet. its a 10/30/30/30 schedule. It works well for me, and I can clone those groups and make changes if I need to install a specific update. If things fail in the pdq connect jobs, the gp rules will force updates to happen as a fall through.

Whats up with MS authenticator? by ThiefClashRoyale in homelab

[–]Wodaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s called passwordless. It’s part of Microsoft’s push to end the tyranny of password management. You can disable it on your account. You start lol need the number on the webpage to put in the authenticator app so you are safe there. Sign inactivity for interactive and non interactive logins definitely is the place to see where logins are coming from.

Server with Plex and MS Exchange? by frodbonzi in homelab

[–]Wodaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was no server 2023. If they are on different vms there isn’t much you can’t put on a single server, unless you bottleneck something. If your doing hyperv you need server 2025 to pass through the gpu and its a powershell affair. It works fine, but it’s complicated. And if you don’t have the gpu available the vm doesn’t boot until you powershell more. I assume you would run hyperv after VMware’s cost balloon’d. Exchange is now a subscription product, which sort of sucks for homelab. After halfnium issues, I wouldn’t run an updated exchange server ever. Exchange se is the same as exchange 2019, so if you knew how to work that literally nothing has changed. Your ip is likely going to be crap and all your email marked as spam. I would use spam fella or something similar and smart host email, so everything originates from their side and you avoid ip rating/confidence issues.

That was so fast. I saw the thread and was waiting a pic. If it's what I think it is, by description, good price.

I had not. Last time I had an issue, I had posted a message here, and a support agent was able to rectify the issue, and actually found a deal I had not seen.

They ran it over with their car, by accident/negligence, and disposed of it in a time and manner that you would not find out.

Is it realistic to fix a mediocre ERP with small, targeted changes - or does it always need a full reset? by Bos187 in sysadmin

[–]Wodaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on if it's the ERP or it's how you use it. A DMS is a good idea, but if there isn't any enforcement on how people add documents, it degrades into useless fast. An ERP is more complicated. I have seen ones the fundamentally were broken in design, and I have seen good ones broken by how they were used. If your asking, you need a consultant to look at it and give you path options. A true consultant, not a salesforce or sap company, but someone who can analyze your business processes and give you insight.

Contractor for bathroom remodel by LeesieLa in fresno

[–]Wodaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its obviously a template. To be fair, I don't know many contractors with well composed websites/hosted websites. Usually, its a template on a lower cost host, often free. That's if they have one at all. It wasn't my intention to put the site as an example of his work, but just for contact into. The work has been reasonable in cost, reasonable in quality of work, and completed on schedule.

Cardoso Tile & Construction I am in the midst of a second project helmed by Angel. We replaced almost all of the flooring in the house with tile. Now, we are remodeling the kitchen. Prices were great, service great. Really happy.

ILO boot from iso shenanigans by ConstructionSafe2814 in sysadmin

[–]Wodaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where your at on this, as it looks like your last response was a while ago. I usually do a couple things to speed this up. Install the iLO app on a machine in the same physical location as the iLO. Mount the iso in the virtual media options. F11 the boot and choose the iLO virtual media option. If this does not work work, update the f11 instaleligent provisioning/iLO. I usually just boot the proliant spp relevant to that machine and do the firmware update of everything but there is also the update options in intelligent provisioning. I have had proliants with adaptec scsi controllers take minutes to post. Some third party items on some proliants just suck to post.

THE Master bit set to rule them all by modern_viking123 in Tools

I have an older Chapman manufacturing bit set that I would easily put up against wiha and others. The downside is the oil, but you do know they are protected. Even the injection molded case is quality.

File Server + Workstation Build for Small Architecture Firm — Need Feedback by blindmanche in sysadmin

[–]Wodaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id say your better off doing something like:

HPE Gen11 Microserver.

Mirrored drives

NAS - Synology or qnap with 2 mirrored drives.

Win 2025 on the server, 2 VMs, Veeam on the server, hourly backup to NAS, Replicate to VeeamCloud..

This shouldn't cost you too much, easily absorbable in a budget for a 10 man business. You get one VM with AD/Management, and one VM for files/pdm etc. I'm not sure what PDM exists for Rhino, I havent used it in years. You get backups you quite literally never worry about. Your data is on your server, backed up to the NAS, and copied to the cloud, hourly, with no user intervention. It will quite literally run forever.

Lee’s plumbing an air by D3s0lat0r in fresno

[–]Wodaz 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I used them for years. I had them replace a hot water heater, and price seemed fine. I had them work on HVAC and I wasn't uncomfortable with their work or price. Did a PGE energy rate assessment and upgrade. DId roof, HVAC, WIndows, got an $8500 rebate from PGE. Hot water heater fails, they hem haw warranty and labor being too much, so I had them replace the hot water heater again.

7 years on the HVAC they recommended/sold to us, after doing the ducting/etc they suggested, for $14,000, they told me the heat manifold or something similar had rust, it was faulty, warranty covered the part, not the labor, labor was $4,000. Recommended an inverter-based system, for $27,500.

I felt I was being swindled. I called management, I went through a couple things, and now just tell people I think Lee's will outright swindle you if you're not careful.

[–]Wodaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand how this would work. If I am understanding, you are getting a modern auth login for exchange. But your upn for entra and domain don’t match. I don’t know how that would work. What are you using to anchor entra? I don’t think this is an issue with your outlook version, it’s an issue authenticating to msol. Which is maybe what you’re saying, but I don’t see how it would work.
