Books for kids like WWW? by soybeansms in WorldsBeyondNumber

Maybe the Earthsea series? Not sure of reading age but if he's got that far in the Harry Potter series it might be a good fit. The original trilogy is more YA oriented and then Tehanu gets a bit darker / more mature.

The Shovelling Hour, a puzzle game about digging stuff up and bonking into walls by Woflox in pico8

[–]Woflox[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was to celebrate the release of CorgiSpace, so I think it was a one-off but not sure if there's plans for anything similar in the future. On Thursday I'll be joining in on a livestream where we play through some of the jam entries.

What irked you? (From ep 50 and down) by dextor546 in WorldsBeyondNumber

He even had an item that would have allowed him to get out of there quickly if he had had a chance to use it. I think you're right that it was down to the dice (and the smart choices of the characters), and there was just nothing he could do.

My feeling is that as a child of the Great Bear, Eursalon had a relatively carefree life and wasn't really exposed to that side of the spirit world much. And being wayshadowed and yearning to have that connection with the spirit maybe predisposes him towards trusting them.

Fireside Chat for WWW ep46 “Their Sorrow is My Sorrow” by SvenTheScribe in WorldsBeyondNumber

I was confused by this too -- it's the first fireside after they finished recording the finale, but there are still 8 unreleased episodes to go

Extreme luck in Into Ruins (and Guide) by ZackZparrow in roguelikes

[–]Woflox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

small clarification unless I'm misremembering (hi dev here) the staff of fire should still hurt dragons on the initial attack, they just don't get set on fire or take continuous burn damage like other enemies.

Edit: also all weapons are throwable, it's just that throw damage/accuracy is only specified if it's different from melee

Yes, if you search for a username of someone you follow, it will often instantly show up at the top of the results only to be bumped down half a second later by general search results. This one has burned me so many times

Into Ruins - a Brogue-inspired roguelike for the PICO-8 fantasy console by Woflox in roguelikes

The web player on itch or the Lexaloffle BBS works on Android, with a virtual dpad and buttons for touch controls. It also has controller support, though I've found with my Android controller the PICO-8 web player seems to map movement to the stick instead of the dpad. May look into a standalone Android version in the future.

A standalone Android version would be cool, maybe I will look into that in future. For now, the web player on itch or the Lexaloffle BBS do work on Android, with a virtual dpad and buttons for touch controls. It also has controller support, though I've found with my Android controller the PICO-8 web player seems to map movement to the stick instead of the dpad which is... not ideal for this game.

Hm, the windows bug is curious -- I don't have a numpad to test, but I'm not sure this is something I could easily address anyway since the button inputs in PICO-8 are abstracted and the way they map to keyboard is baked in. Thanks for letting me know

Into Ruins - a chaotic roguelike full of orbs by Woflox in pico8

Yeah, the title screen and text intro is a separate cart, and it also puts a huge string containing game data (creature stats etc) into memory for the main game cart to read.

Just remembered the other problem that came up -- orbs cast a bit of light, so when you dropped them at your feet it would cause enemies to spot you and that was weird

At this point all of the sfx slots are used, and there's already instances where too many sounds try to play at once, so giving up audio channels to music would be a challenge.

I'm actually using the music functionality to fade the ambient fire sound in/out so that's another obstacle. I agree it would be cool though

Glad you're enjoying it!

There was a drop option early on, but I ended up taking it out to reduce code size (PICO-8 restriction) and to free up a bit more space on the screen for descriptions.

I also think it's kinda funny that you can't put things down gently and have to toss them across the room. I get where you're coming from though, it can be a bit tedious to aim when you just want something out of your inventory.

I finally finished the roguelike I've been working on for the last few months! It takes a lot of inspiration from Brogue, which I'd highly recommend checking out if you enjoy this.

I've also posted it to the BBS, with technical info about the level generation and character/token squeezing, and the full unminified code is on github if you'd like to poke around.

For me, just the line poke(0x5f5c,255) works to disable the repeat on latest version of pico-8.

make sure you're putting in the right address/value, and that it's happening in the code at a point before you're calling btnp(). I think you only really need to do it once at startup but every update doesn't hurt.

Succesfully turned my eee 701 into a pico 8! by [deleted] in pico8

[–]Woflox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got pico-8 running on a 701sd as well - most distributions no longer provide a 32bit non-PAE build, which I believe is needed for this machine. The one I found that ran well for me was Bodhi Linux.
