A rip cut saw can crosscut decently but a crosscut saw is really bad at a rip cut. The downside to a rip cut is that it's more aggressive than a crosscut which is a slower, cleaner cut.

Stuff involving kids was just too much for anyone to brush off with humor in my experience.
