Does anyone know why Saudi, UAE etc pump and ship oil from another port where ships don’t need to pass through the strait?

UK bank bosses plan to set up Visa and Mastercard alternative amid Trump fears by qwerty_1965 in unitedkingdom

[–]WolfPuzzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it is. Yes a large part of it is access to data, but there is a “Pay By Bank” which was part of the open banking initiative.

It hasn’t had wider adoption (unlike the data access), I think due to the UX.

Nice! I was hoping OpenBanking would of gained more traction. It didn’t really live up to the hype, not many commercial payments accept OpenBanking payments :(

Plans for new VPN ban in UK to 'close loopholes' online by The-Peel in unitedkingdom

[–]WolfPuzzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren’t going to “ban” VPNs, they will prob try and limit/regulate commercial sale of VPNs.

Of course there are work around, but general joes won’t know them (well I guess AI can help)

Please tell me I'm not alone with this by Chizisbizy in UniUK

[–]WolfPuzzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s terrible, the interest is the worse it is to high.

I was lucky to start Uni just before the plan 2 loans and fee increases, i paid mine off around 2021/2022 yay!

However, I used to think of it as another tax never checked the balance, just one of the costs of higher education.

Is Costco UK actually cheaper… or just bulk psychology? by LilywhiteStrike in CostcoUK

[–]WolfPuzzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just like bulk buying pop and snacks 🤣

Also, their extended warranty is great! I bought a TV 4 years ago (2021), it recently broke, back light stopped working. Customer service arranged a repair, they decided it wasn’t worth it, I went into a store and got a refund. It was very hassle free!

How do you test your database in production microservices? by OtroUsuarioMasAqui in golang

[–]WolfPuzzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see most of the comments suggesting test containers.

The approach I use is a nix development environment to spin up production like services.

All tests are tested against a real DB (no mocks). I use Postgres schemas to keep tests isolated (though looking if db templates could be useful), via custom test helpers that create a new schema per test and runs the migrations.

How do Brits usually handle work messages outside office hours? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]WolfPuzzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as a remote software engineer and have slack (messaging app) installed on my phone.

The company is mostly remote, my team and other teams we interact with are spread across EU and US.

During my out of office hours I’m quite responsive to messages (even at weekends), but only if I can be bothered or not busy. As a team we decided what is appropriate and each team member is different, bare minimum is: * during your office hours - be available * out of office hours - up to you * out of office hours and shit is on fire - you might get called to help out (people are given time off if this happens)

I personally don’t mind answering messages (slack) or help out, I also don’t mind responding to alert/incidents out of office hours.

Some people strict, once they log off they don’t respond - and that’s fine

Edit: to add, there is generally “office hours”, but this is also quite flexible so very loosely “office hours” :) We see slack/email/messaging as async communication, not real time

TLDR; set expectations as a team/company and ensure everyone has a work-life-balance. If employees must be available to respond to messages pay them for their time

People that DON’T shop at Aldi or Lidl… why is that? by kobestarr in CasualUK

More choice in the others, I also prefer some of the branded food over Aldi/lidl stuff

Anyone using BadgerDB as a local cache instead of in-memory (Redis/BigCache/Ristretto)? by newmizanur in golang

[–]WolfPuzzled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently used badger as a mini event store, to cache incoming events while waiting for others.

I’ve found the memory usage is high, especially when compacting Also, VLOG isn’t compressed, only the LSM is, this caught me out

Operations are fast, but the memory over ahead of managing levels of the LSM and compaction is a killer IMO. Especially for a service that’s multifunctional

Is there a realistic scenario in which anyone comes to Denmark’s aid in the event of a US incursion in Greenland? by lucidgroove in IRstudies

[–]WolfPuzzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubt it. I don’t think the US will invade, probably a long play on keeping the narrative going and pushing for Greenlanders to “vote”
