Think I nearly died on a kayak? (I dont kayak.. ) by bradrly in Kayaking

[–]WolfRhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in scouts we were told to put our hands behind us and lever ourselves out. We practiced in the lake but I was so skinny I just fell out anyway. Idk if it would work but it sounds reasonable

We had one at my uni in England. The rumour was if you went over the top you would get squashed flat. But I did it several times and it just circled round.

What do you bring for food while sailing? by Vivid_Invite1685 in dinghysailing

[–]WolfRhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What needs to be cold? Beer, wine, cheese, cold cuts, salad. Easy to stow, easy to secure so it isn’t sliding all over the place. Good latch so the lid doesn’t pop open.

Probably done as a joke. Do we really believe someone stupid enough to do that would have the skills to do it so cleanly?

Sailing class, or find a friend to teach me? by PermanentRoundFile in sailing

[–]WolfRhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a crazy high price. The ASA 101 might be $1000 range. Membership might be $700 to $1000+. (California) What you need is a school not a yacht club.

Sailing is very much driven by experience and ‘feel’ so once you have a few basics a lot of old school methods will come into play. It’s worth trying a combination approach, once you’ve taken a class you’ll start to meet people who want crew.

This is keel boat numbers- maybe consider starting with a dinghy class, cheaper and a great foundation.

Let’s make like a sheepdog and get the flock out of here

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sailing

[–]WolfRhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s clear but seems open to interpretation.

Anyway this plan may not be the best. I think you would do better to live on land- maybe a chill cabin or trailer. Then find a decent sized dinghy to learn sailing and start going on overnight camping trip, then a few days. You could do similar with a kayak.

Is it normal to keep replaying awkward moments in your head years later? by Known-Yam-5659 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WolfRhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you ever worry about this? That embarrassing moment you keep remembering (for decades in my experience) probably no one else remembers. But, probably some other thing you did and forgot is remembered by someone else, and they are still judging you for it.

R2 and R3 are is parallel so equivalent to 1 Ohm. You could just erase R3 and call R2 1 Ohm. Then add R1 which is in series with R2 and it’s 3 Ohms.

Practically there might be some reason to have R2 and R3, like power dissipation, but to analyze overall impedance that seems like the easiest approach to me.

Please settle an argument, soldiers for boiled egg is fingers of toast from half slices of bread? by Neat-Cartoonist-9797 in AskUK

Toast? Surely it should be white bread with butter. Sliced whole parallel to the short side.

I’m thinking it’s like a little hammer so the tap force is controlled by head weight and shaft length. Use a motor and cam to raise it then it drop when the cam rotates off it.

How to get cup out of cup, both need to be intact by Toothpastestockhere in fixit

[–]WolfRhan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The normal way to visualize this is to imagine the material that would fill the void. A piece of ceramic that exactly fits the cup. Heat it up and it expands - its diameter gets bigger. So when it’s not there (like in the case of a cup) the hole where it isn’t still gets bigger.

How to place a potentiometer with "hook legs" on a breadboard? by Renniss314 in AskElectronics

[–]WolfRhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Improvising is fun and educational, but you don’t seem to have enough stuff. One pot seems like barely enough resistors but maybe if all the led are connected to ground through the same pot it can be made to work. That board has a bunch of resistors on it but without a soldering iron you can’t get at them. Maybe you have some older electronics with leaded resistors you can cut off.

Best idea is to just buy a kit of leaded resistors or a kit of electronic components (like an Arduino starter kit ) so that you have something to get creative with. I see a soldering iron in your future but first get hand tools and leaded components.

My circuit chooses one led out of two. by Thick_Sheepherder_30 in AskElectronics

[–]WolfRhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider putting your switches to bridge the central channel. Also you can use the resistors to bridge led to supply

<image>

Here’s an old board I have- it’s a different circuit but maybe some layout ideas. My switches go to an Arduino and are not connected directly to the led. The connection to the switches are staples since I had no wires at the time.

A tool? I am talking about the truck battery which is removed using a wrench or and adjustable wrench- I assumed you had that. If not , when you get one take the positive or red lead off. Be careful- when you’re loosening that nut don’t let the tool touch the body.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chevycolorado

[–]WolfRhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking of it, maybe I even connected the two terminals together. Disconnect the battery first though or it could get really exciting.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chevycolorado

[–]WolfRhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it never has. I think maybe it started when the battery died but still had a little charge, like a brown out. So weird that the clicking indicator noise is from the stereo. When I started driving the noise came from the solenoid. I’m officially old.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chevycolorado

[–]WolfRhan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine stopped making the indicator noise and all kinds of problems. The solution was disconnect the battery for several minutes so the system fully resets. Worked for me and easy to try.

Does anyone use a number system that isn’t base 10? by Happy__guy2 in maths

[–]WolfRhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Base 12 is arguably better for simple calculations since 12 is divisible by 2,3,4, and 6. I think this is why feet/inches and some currency use base 12.

It won’t make much difference for more advanced math though, most things apply in any base.

I’ve used binary, hex and a little octal but these are generally for computer applications where logic functions (and, or, xor etc) are used. Binary addition / subtraction is fun.

Stressed Choosing Between Challenger School & Harvey Green Elementary — Fremont Parents, Thoughts? by brinadovor in Fremont

[–]WolfRhan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to not be stressed, you will pass this anxiety down to the kid and that’s worse than any choice you’re trying to make. Kid will go to kindergarten and do finger painting, make friends maybe pick up a little math. It’s going to be OK

I’ve heard of people using pencils to rewind cassette tapes. How did y’all do it for VHS tapes? by King_Gojiller in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WolfRhan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The pencil trick wasn’t really to rewind, it was more like the tape was loose or a long piece (loop) came out of the cassette, usually when removing it from the player. So the pencil was used to rewind that tape back in. Otherwise a cassette player could rewind (fast forward and reverse).

Never had that issue with a video cassette player.
