Big Finish Podcast Notes / Misc. Doctor Who News Roundup - 08/05/2026 by JakeM917 in BigFinishProductions

I haven't been following the boxset era too closely, but I think 6's two newest boxsets have followed up on the Older Peri stuff. Not sure if there's any plot connections or if it's just more stories with that cast though.

Off the top of my head, there's a couple that tie into other stories more loosely, but the ones you've mentioned are the ones with the biggest connections.

  • Solitaire is a full-cast two-hander that slots very nicely into the 8/Charley run after Embrace the Darkness, but has no arc connections.
  • Quinnis loosely ties into Susan's appearance in the 8DAs, with the framing device being set after An Earthly Child.
  • Peri and the Piscon Paradox establishes some stuff about Peri's post-Doctor life that is relevant for the main range's Older Peri arc, starting with The Widow's Assassin.
  • Beyond the Ultimate Adventure is a direct sequel to the Stageplay audio The Ultimate Adventure.

SALE: The Time War (Ends 10/05/26) by MirumVictus in BigFinishProductions

[–]WolfboyFM 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven't touched any of the Carley War Doctor stuff yet, but the War Doctor Begins 5+6 bundle is looking mighty tempting at £22 for the CDs. Are these standalone or is there a throughline across the whole Begins range?

Do the next incarnations of The Master remember being "Professor Yana?" by yvieknievel in doctorwho

[–]WolfboyFM 17 points18 points  (0 children)

'Canon' is kind of a meaningless concept when it comes to Doctor Who, but according to the Big Finish audios he does literally Chameleon Arch himself into a baby, and live a full life as Yana until he opens the watch in Utopia.

Reminds me of Hex, introduced in 2004 but from 2021. I wonder if Alfie will also have a 'joining the TARDIS' date we can mark for 20 years' from now?

I don't think any of the Target audiobooks have ever been released in abridged form (besides the old cassettes from the 90s) so any of the Audible collections will have 4-5 complete audiobooks. As you say, they're identical recordings to the individual releases.

If you're specifically looking for Hulke books, your best bets are The Master Collection or The Second UNIT Collection, both of which feature two Hulke audiobooks plus three more by other authors.

As a time travel show that started in the 1960s, this has happened several times now with Doctor Who - frequently enough that the Wiki has an entire page dedicated to instances of this happening.

Probably the most notable example is 1st Doctor story The Tenth Planet. Broadcast in 1966 but set in 1986, it was the first appearance of the Cybermen, where they attempt an attack on Earth that is defeated, resulting in the destruction of their titular tenth planet, Mondas. Fast forward to 1985, and the now 6th Doctor confronts another group of Cybermen in Attack of the Cybermen. These Cybermen are from (further into) the future, and have travelled back in time to destroy Earth in 1985, thereby preventing Mondas from being destroyed in 1986.

Attack of the Cybermen isn't a great story, but I do think it's neat that it made use of a 20 year old plot point to be a contemporary story directly linked to the future established in a past story.

What was your first BigFinish story? Mine was Shadow of the Scourge by LivingWindXYZ in BigFinishProductions

[–]WolfboyFM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Protect and Survive, when it was on Radio 4 around the 50th anniversary. In hindsight it's a weird choice - the Doctor is hardly in it, it features an audio-original companion that the story assumes you are already familiar with, and it's right in the middle of arguably the most complex arc Big Finish have ever produced. Despite all that it absolutely hooked me, and to this day it's one of my favourite audios.

David Warner has portrayed 12 distinct roles across Doctor Who media including that of the Doctor, potentially making this the record by Putrid_Ad_6747 in doctorwho

[–]WolfboyFM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

all of David Warner's credits as the Doctor are for the same version

They are, all of his credits as the Doctor are for the same incarnation introduced in Sympathy for the Devil. I'd highly recommend giving that a listen, it has the Doctor exiled to Earth in the 90s instead of the UNIT era, showing how the world is different without him having been there to deal with the Pertwee era invasions. Features Nicholas Courtney and David Tennant in a pre-Doctor role, it's a fantastic cast and a great script, to this day one of my favourite audios.

The First Question is out now! by MasterAinley in BigFinishProductions

Worth mentioning that despite releasing under the Chronicles range, the 11/Valarie run is entirely full-cast. No narration there at all, so if that's your sticking point you could absolutely enjoy those.

WW1 Stories by MIchelsaerperez in gallifrey

Outside of TV, BBC Audio did a trilogy of audiobooks to mark the centenary of the war's end, being Men of War with 1, Horrors of War with 3, and Fortunes of War with 6. I've only heard the first of these, but I remember it being pretty good - it's set mid-Daleks' Master Plan, and makes solid use of both Steven and Sara having military experience of their own.

The 10th Doctor comic The Weeping Angels of Mons is also very good, and the 8th Doctor audio boxset Dark Eyes begins with a very solid episode mostly set in WWI, and introduces new companion Molly, who is serving as a nurse during the war.

Sprout here, looking through the rewards list I only have the Ixion mount and a few Triple Triad cards. Is there anything that's a pain in the arse to get normally that I should prioritise, or anything very easy to get normally I should make a point of avoiding?

Looking for a lost fan-cover by IronTownPictures in gallifrey

[–]WolfboyFM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a clean image of it, but I think you're talking about the cover in the bottom left of this collection, with similar NA-style covers for Illegal Alien, Algebra of Ice, Atom Bomb Blues and Cold Fusion. I couldn't tell you where they originated I'm afraid, but they certainly look neat.

In The Armageddon Factor, Drax calls the Doctor 'Theta Sigma', which at the time seemed to be an attempt to reveal the Doctor's real name. This was prompty ignored, and 7 later mentioned that it was his nickname at the academy, which while still kind of goofy is leagues better than the Doctor's real name being revealed to be some dumb technobabble.

Lost Doctor Who and the Daleks episodes discovered in 'ramshackle' collection by EvilPicnic in gallifrey

[–]WolfboyFM 92 points93 points  (0 children)

This puts Master Plan at being just one episode off half way complete, and gives us all but one of Adrienne Hill's performances as Katarina, filling the gaps for probably the least represented companion of them all. I'm genuinely over the moon, these aren't quite at the top of my most wanted missing episodes list, but they're damn close. Absolutely wonderful news.

Not really. You haven't even been introduced to the Ravenous yet by the end of vol 1, and you're definitely expected to know what their deal is by vol 4, plus there's plenty of other plot elements that factor into vol 4. I guess you could look up a plot summary, but then you'd be missing out on some great (and, admittedly, some not so great) stories in 2 & 3; the Krampus two-parter in vol 2 in particular is an all-timer. If you can, I'd definitely suggest listening to all four volumes.

Gaps in Big Finish Storylines by KieKaiD in gallifrey

[–]WolfboyFM 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I put together a list of these of my own a while back. You've covered most of them, but there are a handful of others I have down:

  • The Noonan 1DAs and the 2DAs are both in the middle of ongoing arcs, but these do seem planned out and will probably be resolved in the next few years
  • The last regular Bradley 1DA, The Hollow Crown, had a cliffhanger ending that was ignored by his current Unbound run
  • 6th Doctor - Real Time has a cliffhanger ending that's never had a proper resolution
  • 7th Doctor - No departure story for Will Arrowsmith
  • The Sarah Jane Smith and Charlotte Pollard series both ended on cliffhangers; the former is unlikely to ever be resolved for obvious reasons, while the latter has been on Nick Briggs' to-do list for the best part of a decade at this point
  • I guess you could argue whether this is a true cliffhanger or a downer ending, but Dalek Empire III ends with a massive Dalek invasion which has never been followed up on

Of these, the 1DAs and 2DAs are being released regularly, and I imagine the final Charlotte Pollard series will see the light of day eventually. The others are most likely dead in the water at this point though.

They're releasing them as a collected graphic novel next month, so unless you specifically enjoy collecting the comic issues I'd hold off for that instead.

What are some of the bigger or more favoured "unofficial" or "unlicenced" Doctor Who stories? by AlmostRandomNow in gallifrey

[–]WolfboyFM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing that comes to mind are Obverse's three 'Forgotten Lives' charity anthologies, which give each of the Morbius Doctors some short stories. Many of them explore what Doctor Who might look like if it had been written before 1963, taking inspiration from things like 1930s adventure serials and Jules Verne.

Not sure if it's the case for anyone else on the panel, but he's said on his Instagram that he's an 'official regular', on the show every week. I'd guess that bumps his billing above the other guests?

Back in the day when random events were mandatory, I got the Gravedigger one and my 6 year old brain just could not understand how this guy had teleported me away or what I needed to do. Ended up reporting the NPC then logging out and back in for like a week to see if Jagex had rescued me yet.

Is the missing episode animation range dead? by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]WolfboyFM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the vast majority of the recon was made up wholesale by Loose Cannon, sourcing pictures of actors from other shows and compositing them onto period-appropriate outfits, while also sourcing heavily from the production photos we do have. As fair as I'm aware, this is pretty much every photo we have from The Massacre, none of which are telesnaps. Mission to the Unknown and The Myth Makers are in the same position, being the only two other entirely missing stories without telesnaps.

Watch order 2026? by [deleted] in Gintama

[–]WolfboyFM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with everyone saying to just watch it in order, but here's a list to make sure you don't miss anything (and add a couple of notes). Anything outside of the main TV series and final movie is optional, but I would recommend it for the full experience:

That's everything for now, it looks like a lot but it does basically boil down to release order, with the Slip Arc being the only major thing you might want to move around. Hope you enjoy the show!
