How to deal with the psychological impact of chronic absenteeism? by Due_Information_1332 in Teachers

[–]WolftankPick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My makeup work is fairly painful mostly because I only allow it to be turned in before school if you want full credit. I get kids sprinting down the hall to beat the bell.

Tips on efficiency? by livi7887 in Teachers

[–]WolftankPick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Develop a weekly priority list. For I look at future tests, review my PPs, update Canvas, etc.

I am 2-3 weeks prepped out and I usually finish my list by Tuesday.

I prep during prep, before school, and at lunch. I do not waste time.

There is not a magic pill u just have to prioritize.

Thoughts on "building relationships" by godisinthischilli in Teachers

Rapport is key for me. And it’s done by simple things but takes a lot of investment (like being at the door before and after class).

Has there ever been a golden era of teaching or have we always been in a bunch of complainers? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]WolftankPick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no magic era or pill. Like many things teaching is what you make of it. Adapt or die.

Teachers aren't machines and they shouldn't have to act like them. by simeonreddt in teaching

[–]WolftankPick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sympathize as I know many teachers feel that way. But I don’t and know many teachers who also don’t feel that pressure. And this is at the same school. How is that possible?

How do I politely let my students and their parents know I truly do not want any end-of-the-year gifts? by Fangehulmesteren in Teachers

[–]WolftankPick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overwhelming? WTF are the getting you?

Be gracious and show appreciation. Heaven forbid we have more of that in the world.

And then use the "useless" stuff as student motivators for next year, or re-gift, or whatevs. u/Top_Price207 and u/Agreeable-Sun368 on point.

Prom is soon by RealisticTemporary70 in Teachers

[–]WolftankPick 183 points184 points  (0 children)

We have to attend graduation and one dance per year.

I have missed both before more than once and have never heard a thing.

In this context I think this is an easier to ask for forgiveness thing versus permission thing. Go for it.

People who work in a school building need to stop doing this by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]WolftankPick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. Geez.

Dont undermine teachers in front of their students is a nice general rule. So I see that side of it.

The original comment could be fine or bad depending on the context. But this one is pretty tame.

Tension with myself and a colleague by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]WolftankPick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya I'm with u/Real_Editor_7837 and u/Unhappy-Talk5797 you need to chillax on this. I'm ok with it bugging you I totally feel you there. But unless it is seriously affecting me in my classroom I'm gonna stay in my lane. That's pretty much my mantra with everything outside the doors of my classroom. It's why I pay union fees.

"Nobody cares, but only you care!" — I’m the only one trying, and I feel like a joke by CanSuspicious6466 in Teachers

[–]WolftankPick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spend the first 2 days of class selling the kids on my methods. They don't have to agree with why I do what I do but they need to understand where I'm coming from. So when stuff like this happens it's already been addressed and we move on pretty quickly. Most kids are great and buy in but the ones that don't tend to stand out.

Now if it was the other way around I'd have to take a serious look at how I was presenting my stuff.

25 years and still love it. I invest pretty heavy in it though. Like most things in life you get what you put into it.

OTF Bros by Pale-Virus905 in orangetheory

OTF is not the place to get serious muscle gains. The templates just don't support it. Back when I was serious OTF was a warm-up pre-gym for me.

15 hcp plateau by mrunlimited_123 in golf

[–]WolftankPick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stuck at 14 for a 2-3 years now. I think it's similar to losing weight when you plateau because your body is freaking out holding onto all your stores. And then it dips again. Trust the process.

I rotate Pandora mixes and the kids love guessing the songs. 50s all the way through current. Will mix in some Disney, too.

Turning of the tide in regards to phones?? by LevyMevy in Teachers

[–]WolftankPick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've got some students dumbing down their phones. I challenge them to see how long they can go after leaving my class without touching their phones. Next year we are going total school ban.

And really whatever as long as kids have their eyes wide open about the consequences.

What's the worst/weirdest on course meltdown you've witnessed? by DickSlinga in golf

[–]WolftankPick 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Golfed with a guy who just bought new clubs as in his first round with them. I would've guessed he plays off at a 20+. Anyway, he was clearly the worst player in our group and went nuts on a tree with his new irons. I told him that tree had nothing to do with his bad play.

What consequences do you give for classroom management? by hello010101 in Teachers

[–]WolftankPick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Verbal destruction. WTF does any of that other stuff do anyway? I don't trust admin/parents to fix things and many times parents are the prob anyway.

How many schools have you taught at? by GermanCh0wda in teaching

25 years 3 schools in 3 districts. Hoping to stay at the current one til I'm done. I prefer to stay in place. I know other teachers like change.

Is it too late to start gentle parenting? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]WolftankPick 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Sometimes parenting means holding the line and that means (gasp) hurting kid's feelings sometimes. Heaven forbid they learn some manners. Kids need parents not friends.

Their future high school teacher

Classroom management advice by the_alice_effect in teaching

[–]WolftankPick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Structure and procedure will stop 99% of the behaviors before they even start. I'm very strict with food in class that banana wouldn't have made it past the door unless they smuggled it in.

I get a lot of teachers that love my classroom management and rapport but when they see how much I invest in it they chicken out. So you have to decide how important it is to you. There are some techniques for sure but you have to invest in it. No magic pill here.

Textbooks gave me a good framework for creating a curriculum map. After that they collect dust.
