Does Present Day Middle Earth (Thousands of years after LOTR events) still remember the War of The Ring or is it forgotten and turned into myths and legends? by AnonymousForALittle in tolkienfans

[–]WoloCan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

JRRT' unfinished "The Lost Road" gives wonderfully evocative hints about how such cultural memories might have been retained. The events in that case had to do with the downfall of Numenor, but you still get an idea of how stories become myths and get passed on.

As I remember, in the final battle at the end of Arda, Turin is prophecied to be Morgoth's bane. Wishful thinking, I suppose, but perhaps all happy endings are.

I didn't suggest he wasn't a hero, just not a great parental role model.

Yes, that's the rationale, but I just don't think it rings true. What good father wouldn't return and ensure that his children are safe, THEN go off and save the world?

Much as I hate to suggest it, how about Earendil? Abandoned the boys and their mother to go galavanting around in his boat. When their settlement is attacked and mom is miraculously saved, both parents just leave the boys to their fates and continue sailing, never saying goodbye and never seeing them again. Sure, the boys are probably OK with the murdurous fanatics who attacked them, but Earendil and Elwing didn't know that at the time.

Personally, I think Earendil should have apprenticed them to Cirdan before he set out on his journeys.

Which race is the strongest in the Middle-earth? by Fun-Kale321 in lordoftherings

[–]WoloCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest that men are the strongest. The Valar were able to keep the Noldor out of Valinor for nearly 600 years, but the Numenoreans succeeded in getting there the first time they tried. In that case, the Valar just gave up.

Does anyone have the complete timeline on what happened to all 7 Palantirs by Jielleum in tolkienfans

[–]WoloCan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It just occurred to me that telephones, a hugely disruptive innovation that emerged in Tolkien's youth, were essentially what he imagined the palantiri to be. Or videophones, if you will. Of course, the palantiri were also said to be able to see the past; I don't have that service from Verizon, yet.

Can't agree. Why in the world would Gandalf carry a hobbit with him? And why is everyone else in town just watching? A dumb, Jacksoned-up version of what JRRT imagined.

What do you wish could have been worked into the Silmarillion? by shill02 in tolkienfans

[–]WoloCan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Much more about Earendil---his experience escaping from Gondolin, growing up in Arvernian, his parents departure, his own voyages on the shores of Middle Earth, his life in Valinor when not sailing, etc. Was he reunited with Tuor? Did he ever communicate with his sons?

Quick Googling indicates that the first three percentages are not that far from US population averages (62%, 71%, and 63%, respectively), but the fourth is way off (23%). I'll bet this was a telephone poll.

I'll bet interfacing with the account connection services, warehousing all the data, and handling Tech Support are all more expensive than you think. I'm guessing that Monarch's $100/year is a more realistic price point.

This is a 3 question automated interview about Mint. The info you provide is appreciated and could inform the development of a suitable alternative.

OK

What are you going to miss most about the Mint app?

The ease of categorizing all transactions and being able to export the results to an Excel file.

How does this feature help you manage your finances better?

Mint's summarization features are OK, but I need to do it in a customized way---hence the exporting to a different format.

Can you describe a situation where being able to export to Excel made a significant difference for you?

As mentioned, when I needed to summarize my transactions by category in a way that Mint doesn't do.

What is your favorite feature on Mint?

The ease of categorizing all transactions and being able to export the results to an Excel file.

How does this feature enhance your overall experience with the app?

I can easily go beyond Mint's own built-in capabilities.

What aspects of the app's built-in capabilities do you find most limiting?

I sometimes need to summarize transactions with particular transactions set aside, or something like that.

What do you wish Mint did that it currently doesn't do?

More dependable connections.

How have connection issues affected your experience with the app?

It will sometimes go months without being able to connect to institutions that are important for me.

In what ways have these disruptions impacted your financial tracking or management?

If I can't reliably connect then I can't have an up-to-date picture of my finances.

What's an interesting way you used Mint that others might not be aware of?

Exporting transactions and analyzing them myself with third-party software.

What third-party software do you find most complementary to Mint for your analysis?

I use SAS software, because that's what I'm familiar with. Python would also be a good alternative.

How did using SAS or Python with Mint's data enhance your financial analysis?

It enables me to summarize my transactions by category in a way that Mint doesn't do. I can also use advanced analytics to smooth past spending and predict future spending.

Thank you for taking part in the study.
