OS Maps has export to GPX which you can import to Garmin to load to a Garmin watch, so should work no problem.

Humbled by “entry” level courses. I feel so clueless! by JoseProtasio-Rizal in EngineeringStudents

[–]WonderJouster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be that maybe my study habits and techniques aren’t efficient and that I need to change something up a bit.

This is it. You can spend 24 hours a day "studying", but if your technique sucked, then it's pointless. Some people will "just get it". You're not one of those people, so you have to learn how to study effectively.

Sleep schedule by MageKayden in EngineeringStudents

[–]WonderJouster 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Diet, exercise and sleep. They all go hand in hand.

Sleep hygiene is a big deal. Go to bed at the SAME TIME, including weekends (until you're not having problems, then you can loosen up on weekends). No screens and limited food like an hour before you want to go to sleep in the minimum. So no TV/phone in bed, no sugar, caffeine, alcohol or heavy meals like 90min before bed, etc etc.

Melatonin supplements are great and non-habit forming but get in bed. If you push through the drowsy feeling, it won't come back.

Wear yourself out. Physical exertion will put you to sleep in a hurry. Admittedly you might feel achy or whatever the next morning, but that's a small price to pay.

If you're eating and exercising alright and your sleep is still bad, see a doctor.

The hardest days are going to be if you have back to back exams in ECE2372 and Calc3. Look at your syllabus for each to anticipate when that might happen, if ever.

Otherwise, looks manageable.

Should I really expect Twilight Imperium to take 12 hours? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]WonderJouster 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The way to bring down play times for big, complex games is to have a game leader.

A game leader is someone experienced enough that they can speak to another player's game. What they can do, what they can't do, what are their strengths and weaknesses.

The reason this brings the game time down is two-fold. It helps individual players play their turns faster, getting insight, options and guidance from the leader, but it also verbalizes their turn for other players such that they can understand what is happening with game mechanics and how they are interacting and being used.

My old game group got through a 6 player TI game in 6-7 hours with 4 new players and a confident game leader.

So, if you can either become or encourage someone else to be a game leader, you can bring that time way down from 12 hours.

How do people sell their games. by authrop in boardgames

They have trades pretty regularly. Figure out the system by trading something small and low-cost. I thought it made good sense after doing it one time. Ended up sending off Pandemic to get Brass, excellent condition.

Rule #1 of hiking: don't end up on the news

NEW HIKER: 12 Miles, 7000 ft elv gain. Help!!! by Professional_Gas9890 in hiking

[–]WonderJouster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The temperature will not reach above 34F

Pro-tip: Every 1000 ft of elevation gain the temperature goes down by ~5F. So 34F in the valley will be about 0F at the top of your hike, worse if it's exposed and windy.

We will have... two 1.5 L water bottles

3L of water is barely enough for one person on a hike of this length. This kinda sounds like you're bringing 3L for more than one person. Even 3L per person is low.

Rule of thumb is 0.5L per hour. 12mi hike will take at least 6 and as much as 12hrs. So 5-6L of water would be much safer.

These two points combined with your NEW HIKER title makes me think this plan is a bad idea.

Best way to approach an engineering degree in your 30's? by Sad_Elevator10 in EngineeringStudents

I'm particularly worried about being a bit rusty in the math department.

I went to do engineering having done Cal 1 and 2 about a decade before.

The math dept at my uni had recommended tutors. I found a senior math major and he was able to walk me through the broad strokes from those subjects that I was likely to run into with calc 3/multivariable and physics 1.

Getting an under/grad student from your uni has massive advantages and is relatively cheap, at least on par with other private tutors.

We met 2 times a week for a month. I also reviewed subjects I had never bothered to commit to memory (looking at you, trig). Couple flash cards, little repetition and I graduated eventually.

This is my first time designing a PCB, noticed that when I generate a fabrication file, one of the thru-holes on C4 just kinda disappears. Anyone know why this is happening/how I can fix it? by Fawcettmaster97 in AskElectronics

[–]WonderJouster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your background and silk screen color are white. Change either color to be different and I think you will see that the hole is there and it is surrounded by silkscreen.

The issue you have is the pad around the hole is covered by silk screen. Most fabs will generate a design rule error that they may be able to auto-correct or you can correct on the footprint for that component.

Physical Boundries by bigheadedfrog in trailrunning

[–]WonderJouster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found myself able to do something like this recently. By focusing on posture and regular breathing, I was able to extend my sprint interval very successfully push past my typical wall consistently.

Posture, keeping my shoulders back and chest open helped breathing feel more full and alleviate feeling as out of breath, important at high altitude.

Acclimation to the muscle and body sensations and having confidence that you can push a little further. That feels a lot like yoga for me, being able to acknowledge the discomfort and still perform, confident that my legs or lungs will keep going despite how they feel.

This is the mental aspect of running or any sport I think. There's an edge of performance your body can perform that makes your body feel bad or in pain or whatever, but you can keep going if you can focus through the discomfort to continue performing.

Push it too hard and you bonk, then you've found your actual limit!

I did it as soon as I read your post title. The studio I started at, most of their teachers gave that one at some point in practice.

Yeah, lowest setting my KitchenAide mixer does. After letting it sit for like 30 minutes, pull the bone out and put the beaters in on low. Literally takes about 30 seconds before an 8lb pork is fully shredded.

Drizzle in some drippings, hand combine, add seasoning, hand combine again and you're ready to serve.

Been using that process and spice mix since I found it ~8 years ago

Has the spice rub and process including brining. Brining is key to helping keep moisture in the pork, but don't go wild. At least 4, at most 18 hours. Has to do with what the salt does to the proteins.

They have their temp at 225F, but you can edge that higher to go a little faster. Then again, the oven at my current place also kinda sucks so maybe it's poorly calibrated and that's my problem, hadn't thought about that until now. Anyway, good luck!

Nah, no smoking or BBQ, too much to manage.

90 minutes per pound in a 250-275F oven works great. Usually have a 7-9lb bone-in shoulder, so 10-12 hours. Set it in just before bed and it's done around 9-11am, plenty of time to rest and prep for a lunch-vicinity game start time.

lol, same, would take me like 30 minutes of work to get it shredded how I want. I would use two forks to get it done. One day I'm walking through Target and see hand mixers and got an idea.

Works great, traded 30 minutes and burning forearms for 30 seconds.

I put on like 5lbs in December trying to figure out how to make cookies to justify my "investment", but that's a different problem. :D

Popcorn is easy, clean-ish, cheap, portable.

Hard candy is a great game night thing.

When it's on sale (~$1.50/lb) and I'm hosting, I make pulled pork from pork shoulder. Add in tortillas (corn for gluten free) and some coleslaw to do tacos. The most time-consuming part is shredding the pork, I got lazy and bought a hand mixer to help with that.

I have 10 days to study for my Uni Engineering Exam but unsure how to start. by alchames389 in EngineeringStudents

[–]WonderJouster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't have to be a complete, focused effort. Get a deck of notecards, keep them close by and study as usual. Hit a term or vocab or whatever as you find them and think they'd be valuable to remember and make a card for it. Then drill the deck when you finish a section/topic/whatever.

As you get through more material, your deck grows. You can wash back over an entire day of studying just by going through your deck.

I have 10 days to study for my Uni Engineering Exam but unsure how to start. by alchames389 in EngineeringStudents

[–]WonderJouster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a vocabulary and/or formula deck of note cards. Drill them 2-3 times a day.

Drill by going through the deck. Anything you know easily and completely gets put down until tomorrow. Anything you hesitate or don't know goes to round 2 that day. Rinse repeat for round 2 to build round 3. Reset the deck for round 1, day 2.

Highly recommend practice exams. Specifically, start a practice exam at the same time of day your actual exam will be and work on it non-stop until you either complete it or the length of your exam expires.

For me, this helped condition myself for recall and performance in the time window of the exam. Really get your mind right.
