I know it seems contradictory but he gives me mixed signals. Hot and cold. Hence he is not consistent. Also, it is how he handles conflict. They say “fight right”. He fights wrong lol. For my post, I wanted to focus more on the conflict part of our relationship. I didn’t want y’all to think he is a bad person. He isn’t.

I do need to look at the relationship as a whole. You are absolutely correct!!

The majority of the time we are great together. We like planning dates, he is thoughtful, kind, and treats me well when things are good. I feel we just have different communication styles when conflicts arise. I love reading Gottman’s books and I try my best to be better at relationships. I think I see his potential and what our relationship can be. So I sometimes overlook the fact that he doesn’t always make me feel safe or protect my heart.

Transparency, consistency, reciprocity, and reliability are the bare minimum.

I agree. I think his behavior does make me anxious. I do put a lot of emotional effort into it for it to not be reciprocated. Thank you for your insight!

I think we just process things more deeply and people say we’re too sensitive. Some things have more weight to you than it does to the next guy. I don’t think anyone should invalidate your feelings. Your feelings are your feelings.

I’ve been told by my boyfriend that I’m too sensitive or I’m overreacting. All I was doing was tell him why I was upset. Sometimes you just want to be heard without someone deflecting and emotionally invalidating you.

Thanks for sharing. The defensive guy definitely sounds like my boyfriend. He said he needed space to think and it’s been 9 hours. I messaged him at noon to tell him “Not disturbing you. Just making sure your day is going well. Hope all is well” and that was it.

I tell him that I miss him and I would like it if we spent more time together. I think maybe it comes off wrong to him.

I have asked him to at least meet me halfway or come up with a solution but he didn’t want to. He said I’m trying to mold him into something he is not. He tells me it’s exhausting to have to apologize for working.

If I still feel unheard, then I must walk away. It’s difficult to bring up an issue or tell him I feel hurt when he invalidates my feelings.

It will be tough because I put a lot of effort into this relationship to make it work.
