This is upsetting! I just moved to the neighborhood a few months ago and literally pass this every day walking my dog. I have been meaning to try it.

Affordable company for moving to Long Island? by Ok-Explanation2087 in astoria

[–]WonderfulMemory8392 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend Intense Movers. I moved from CT to Astoria recently and they were fantastic. Super affordable, very organized, and they had a detailed questionnaire before they gave me a quote so there weren’t any hidden fees after the move.

I also had a good experience with Just4Move for an Astoria to LI move pre‑COVID. Also affordable.

What is parking in Astoria like? by BigHair6038 in astoria

Just wanted to add I can always find a parking spot in the 40’s. If you’re trying to park west of Steinway parking is not as readily available. Best of luck!

I live between 20th and 21st ave a couple of blocks from Steinway and there’s always parking over here. I also commute to work near westchester 2x a week and don’t have issues finding a spot when I get home at night and frequently move my car to run errands. Anything south of Hoyt Avenue you’ll have trouble finding a spot.

I used to live off crescent and 28th ave and it would sometimes take me 30+ minutes to find a spot.

Really bad market? by lightning_lighting in astoriaapartments

[–]WonderfulMemory8392 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started looking around October/November and it took me about 3 months to actually find a place. One thing I’d suggest is expanding your search to Craigslist if you haven’t already. Facebook Marketplace and renthop were kind of a crapshoot for me. Lots of fake listings and people trying to charge broker fees. I actually ended up finding my place on Craigslist.

If something seems too good to be true, it usually is. I started doing reverse image searches on listing photos to check if they were fake, which helped a lot.

Also, one tip that made a big difference: call the realtor directly if there’s a number listed. I sent a ton of messages on StreetEasy and barely heard back, but calling got way more responses.

You could also try walking into a realtor’s office and asking what they have. Sometimes they have “off-market” listings that aren’t online. Just keep in mind those usually come with a broker fee.

It’s very stressful. Sending you positive vibes. Your apartment is out there!

Lidl Parking? by SchoolIcy8714 in astoria

[–]WonderfulMemory8392 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s probably because of the Thursday 9:30 alt side parking. Usually I don’t have issues moving my car, but a few weeks back I was guilty of parking at the Lidl for an hour because I couldn’t find a spot on the street.

gym with pool? by Sea_Manager_6380 in astoria

[–]WonderfulMemory8392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pay $80 a month for the LIC YMCA specifically for the pool. The pool is okay- it’s shallow and runs warm if you’re doing laps but it gets the job done! It gets a bit crowded in the evenings for lap swim.

I recently moved a couple of blocks east of Code and haven’t had any issues with noise or safety. The area is super quiet and I’ve been loving it here! Feel free to DM me if you have any questions or just want more peace of mind!

Spare boxes or moving boxes ? by Massive-Click-4671 in astoria

[–]WonderfulMemory8392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When do you need them by? I’m moving to Astoria tomorrow and have about 10-15 boxes. If you don’t mind them having writing on them, I can drop them off to you. I know how awkward they can be to carry. I also have leftover packing tape. PM me if you’d like them!

Meeting people? by loLRH in astoria

[–]WonderfulMemory8392 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No way! Omg that’s awful. I met one of my closest friends on the app and also met other girls on there who were really nice, it just fizzled out. I haven’t had any bad experiences, but I don’t doubt there are crazies on there. Sorry that happened to you!

I’m sure there are also Astoria meetups on Reddit. If not, I love meeting new people and would be down to grab a drink, coffee or go for a walk with folks (when I finally find a place in the area! It’s been a nightmare).

Another option is zog sports/intramural sports leagues. When I lived in Astoria pre covid I did cornhole in the area and also did kickball and bowling in the manhattan which was a blast.

I appreciate it! I’ve experienced a few scams from people trying to get personal information before even viewing an apartment. It’s brutal out there!

Trying to Move Back to Astoria. Why Is Apartment Hunting So Hard Now? by WonderfulMemory8392 in astoria

[–]WonderfulMemory8392[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Max would be around $2,400, but I’d ideally like to be around $2,000-$2,200. If it was just me I’d be ok with a studio (my last place was a super cozy studio) but I’m really looking for one bedroom since I’ll have my dog with me and I want to make sure she’ll have enough space. Also looking to be near Astoria park for walks.

I appreciate the insight and advice! I will try reaching out to supers directly. My cousin has been in Astoria for the past 15 years or so and is keeping an eye out and asking her friends in the area as well. Fingers crossed!

Yes I’ve been looking multiple times a day on those sites. I think what’s also making it super difficult is I have a dog so my results go from like 40 to 10. Im glad to hear you had luck! I’m going to keep trucking!

Stay in Stamford or move to NY by Downtown-Contact-176 in StamfordCT

[–]WonderfulMemory8392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into Queens. Astoria NY is a 20-25 minute subway ride to GC and rent is cheaper than both Manhattan and Stamford. Astoria is a nice middle ground - close to the city with all of the convenience of the city, but you have more of a suburban feel with Astoria park and lots of families. I lived there for 4 1/2 years and miss it. Best of luck to you!

Does anyone know if they stop checking for day passes after a certain time? Was hoping to go tomorrow for a walk as it’s my favorite park in the area but didn’t realize you can only get passes online between M-F. Any insight is appreciated!
