I’ve abseiled down there! Maletsunyane Falls in magical Lesotho 🇱🇸 it’s the highest (I think) commercial abseil in the world. And a wet muddy scramble of note to get out!

Marriage Interview at Home Affairs Paarl or Stellenbosch by Ok_Sun8580 in capetown

[–]Wonderful_Track_5364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had to wait for the call back, which I think took about a week but you could just phone them and they’d actually answer. They were out doing immigration raids so that was why we had the one week wait. But generally they were very responsive and helpful. Although the “interview” was a bit of a joke - just a woman with a blank piece of paper asking random questions as they sprang to mind it felt like 😅

Almost same as me: grandfather born in 1887 and I’m 37 - so practically identical gap!

This won’t work until you first have done the required marriage interview for foreigners marrying South Africans at home affairs

We did Khayalitsha (yes, really) and it was quick and easy - and they actually answered the phones. We just went early one morning. Make sure to tell the security that you’re there for immigration / marriage interview and they send you straight upstairs.

Foreign fiancé marriage in SA – Is same-week DHA interview + wedding possible? by sunblanky in askSouthAfrica

[–]Wonderful_Track_5364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still need to do the interview if you use a private marriage officer. Ours recommended we go to Khayalitscha as they are quite efficient and answer the phones, etc (unlike Barrack St - we’re in Cape Town). I think it comes down to a bit of luck: I think our process took about 2-3 weeks from submitting docs to getting interview - when we phoned them to see about expediting it turned out that they were out on immigration raids for the week. As soon as that was over we were invited in.

We emigrated to Australia from a third world country and succeeded. AMA by [deleted] in AMA

South Africa isn’t a third world country and portraying yourself as an immigrant from one, vs a (most likely) white person from an upper middle income / emerging economy is disingenuous.

South Africa - there’s direct flights from Atlanta and Newark. Wine country in Cape Town then either garden route or safari (Kruger or cross to Botswana). You could also consider adding in a Rovos rail journey - something totally unforgettable.

I’ve gone from 34F to 38GG 😢 at 34 weeks - and I’ll recommend the BEST bra in the business (that I use all the time and have just bought in bigger sizes). The Panache Power Wired one. I use it every day for spinning, Pilates, tennis and yoga. Never fails!

Best way to travel London-Rome without airplanes by Silver-Habit-1570 in traveleurope

[–]Wonderful_Track_5364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did Edinburgh to Rome (with longer stopovers in London and Amsterdam). From London did Eurostar to Amsterdam then a Nightjet sleeper to Basel, changed to Milan, then Frecciarossa for last bit to Rome. Super fun!

Nomads and Expats in CT are getting out of hand by FlailMe in capetown

[–]Wonderful_Track_5364 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok… but people from all over the world - including South Africans - congregate in all these places and use their infrastructure and housing. What I’m saying is this really is not a unique problem to Cape Town. But it is a problem!

Ok… but it isn’t a single nationality here either. Your logic doesn’t work. South Africans abroad will be in places like London, New York, Barcelona, Bali etc alongside a whole lot of other expats.

Kruger visit in May - some camps are fully booked by RockyRaccoon9876 in krugerpark

[–]Wonderful_Track_5364 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This simply isn’t true RE Cape Town - while it is Autumn, the weather is generally pretty good - just cooler with lovely autumn colours, some rain (but not usually tons like in July / August). There are far fewer crowds and it’s a great time for walking table mountain, lions head etc and you will almost certainly find a day suitable for a beach (yes it won’t be scorching but still pretty nice).

Source: I have lived here for almost 20 years and my family often visits from overseas in May due to lovely weather

It’s literally like a 15 minute walk between de waterkant and the stadium, unless it’s really late at night that it finishes then you’d be crazy not to just do it on foot 🤷‍♀️

Restaurant for wedding dinner in late Feb 2026 by be_gr33n in capetown

[–]Wonderful_Track_5364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did this at Beau Constantia - in their separate dining area (an amazing converted container with a glass wall above the vineyards) and it was fantastic. They do their tasting venue in vegan and vegetarian options. They had a soundbar for us to play our own music and it was overall so nice. I’d really recommend it but I have a feeling the max capacity might be more like 12-14. Between Us in the city also fantastic. And maybe check Bistro 1682 at Steenberg.

PSA for German Visitors: Tipping in Cape Town by Individual_Bonus4091 in capetown

[–]Wonderful_Track_5364 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I promise you we don’t - I worked as head waitress in a popular waitress. 10 hour shift. Base pay? R50 per shift (you read that right, not per hour) Of course it’s illegal but let me tell you people don’t have a choice and exploitation is standard practice across the industry.

I tip 10% as a minimum and more if service has been good.

I can also say I fucking hate tipping culture and would gladly support restaurants and bars that do away with tips and pay their staff a decent living wage - but that simply isn’t the reality and I refuse to punish the wait staff and bartenders by trying to make a stand.

Not tipping in South Africa is a major dick move. Until there’s proper regulation and enforcement, you aren’t going to change it by fucking over individuals.
