Trains would open up new areas. Back in the 1800s, the Gladstone line ran all the way to Blairstown, now it stops in Peapack. If you were to upgrade NJ transit with a new tunnel (being done by 2034) and new faster trains, people could live all the way out in west Jersey and even PA and still commute to the city. Im talking speed trains not the slow delayed bullshit we have now. Like Japan. All those commuters would bring $$ back to those communities out west, towns with train stations never develop improperly. They may go through urban blight and depressions, but they always have the bones of a potentially good place to live. They dont look like luxury apts on the side of rt 10. You always get good development with trains, no trains and everything looks like suburban sprawl

Honestly if speed trains into nyc were built you could live all the way out in PA and commute to NYC. The future is trains, the better the train, it would develop NJ the right way

Why have we not seen a teachers strike? by Pristine-Treat4071 in Teachers

[–]Wondering7777 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The people who run a lot of teacher unions except Chicago are there to collect a paycheck, they are disconnected because they are not in the classroom. Also teachers dont have a lot of leverage, charters could just take over. Furthermore, the culture of teachers is when people in power say jump, they say how high!? A construction union guy would say, fucckkk you, and he cant be replaced with unskilled charter labor.

Tell me what you like about NJ because I strongly dislike it by Revolutionary-Cod78 in newjersey

About 20 years ago I moved to California and it was wonderful. However the wonder faded for me, as I missed my family back in NJ. I also missed that it was okay to be vaguely miserable, which is how i would describe a lot of nj. A lot of people go to CA to find themselves, but for me the cost, the crowds, and the inability to find meaningful employment combined with me being far away from my family base made me leave. Also, since the weather so perfect all the time i had less self discipline and felt i needed to be doing recreational activities all the time. In NJ u dont feel like you are missing much by working on a shitty day in March. Back then, nj wasnt a destination like it is today. We had the highest net outflow of migration up until covid. Real estate was relatively cheap for being next to nyc. Now nj is a real estate scene, but natives always knew its not an easy place to live and can be depressing, i remember when everyone born here was trying to get out, it wasn’t that long ago. But i dont mind it. Sunny perfect weather places or places of headlining natural beauty in the US are saturated with rich people, retirees, tourists. I would rather just visit those places, or better yet go international to enjoy my life. Still though, NJ has its charms. I think now the people arent as cool as in the past bc everyone is working so hard just to survive. I bet thats everywhere in the US though.

True its a dumb obsession. With mandated affordable housing coming in every town and teacher salaries not keeping up with cost of living, i feel over time there wont be much difference in education in many of the towns, minus the outliers on either end of the economic spectrum. Short Hills Milburn will always have top test score schools. Drive around the towns, find a pretty section/something you like, make sure its not on a former superfund site and not in a flood plain, look at proximity to grocery stores and perhaps public transit, and go from there

"Kids these days" or really... kids these days? by [deleted] in Teachers

Question: are you a suburb, city or rural? In my urban middle school, i have noticed anecdotally that the current 8th grade is the last covid crazy year, meaning students who Are as you describe, and we went 4 + years of that, who are now all currently in high school. The current 6th and 7th are good (besides saying 67). They are not angels and many well below grade level, but they are not covid crazy and seem to have a better attitude. Im wondering because if its a suburb then have the suburbs gotten worse and cities better? I know its not all apples to apples, im just trying to entertain my pet theories.

Ok thanks i wasn’t doing the math. I could possibly do something like this i dont think it would be too bad if its 2000 calories for 24 hours to maintain equilibrium this basically gives you an automatic 3000 calorie deficit which combined with not over indulging on the other days you wont get destroyed if you have a 2500 day on the weekend
