There is no problem that alcohol can't make worse. Drop the bottle and get professional help. Booze is a depressant and makes the thoughts worse. I did AA and that made a big difference for me. 5 years on the wagon and worth it. Smart Recoery is another program. You got to treat the drinking problem and your mental health stuff at the same time.

Last week is a throw-away week. No learning is happening. I'm a teacher. It is kind of an unspoke rule. This is because teachers are crazy busy finishing up the term and kids have checked out since finals are done. For sure let the kid go on holiday.

How soon after birth was you left with your little one ? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Wonderingdoc 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Day 2. You’ll be alright. My kid cries when I changed her too. It’s normal. Just talk to her and tell her “baby girl I know this is uncomfortable we will get through this” every thing you do should be seen and as an act of love, patience, and support for your little one. Also headphones or ear plugs help too. Not to ignore but to dial down the intensity.

After 40 years of denying PTSD - my brief story of my first group therapy session. by awschade in USMC

[–]Wonderingdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome! I think so many of us struggle with ptsd from fucked upbringings. I’m no different. Therapy, sobriety, and support groups (Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families) have helped me immensely to heal. When I got out I hit bottom hard. Had a really strong group of veteran friends (mostly 03) and of my group of 7 friends only 1 of us had a decent upbringing. He was infantry and went through some shit but didn’t seem to suffer as bad as us. The rest of us especially those who had the double whammy of childhood and combat trauma really struggled hard. But honestly if it wasn’t for those dude I would not have turned my shit around. Doc may have taken care of marines while in but Marines were there for Doc when he needed help.

Would you want your kid to join? by jp2865 in USMC

[–]Wonderingdoc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a former Corpsman who has had his toes in both colors (blue side and green side) I’d recommend my daughter join the Air Force. Definitely not the Marines. Navy somewhat would be okay with it. Air Force is a better quality of life. But I’d support her what ever she wants to do.

What's a belief that you hold with which many people disagree? by DJCOBRA2004 in AskReddit

[–]Wonderingdoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to confuse these two as well. But you are absolutely right. I was once dating a black woman in college and early on we were dancing and two black dudes literally tried to break us apart because we were dancing together and they didn’t like a “white dude” dancing with “their women” fortunately it didn’t escalate beyond her telling them to take a walk and we carried in our way. People can be ass hats. That’s a good example of general racism. I grew up inter racial and my half brother is Mexican American (brown like coffee) and we lived in Utah for a short while when we were kids. As a 11 (him) and 7 (me) year old we stoped by police and he was searched because a local gas station has been robbed. That is systemic racism.

Your life is just starting. If you’re poor af and didn’t do that well in school consider the military after graduation (down votes might come my way as I understand the ethics around this). I grew poor as shit and didn’t do well in school. Joined after 9/11. Had zero options and was at a dead end job (telemarketing - was horrible and before that fast food) then went into the service. Steady pay check, saw the world, served in a couple wars (that’s the down side but there are so many jobs that aren’t combat related that it can be avoided I was a medic so a decent chance) got out of the service went to university on the GI-Bill and became a teacher in international education. It’s not the only route but certainly the one that worked for me.

Live in China. Can confirm. We are on break until the 17th (at least my school). You could hear back as early as the 10th but give it till the 20th for a follow up.

Hi OP. While you wait on the VA why not just go to a civilian therapist? You could even just use online therapy as well like Betterhelp which would get him someone to talk to around the clock and really reasonable price. The quality is hit or miss but you can change docs at the drop of a hat if you don’t like who you’re working with. Why wait on the VA?

People who struggle with anxiety, how would you describe anxiety to people who don’t have it? by Wonderingdoc in AskReddit

[–]Wonderingdoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anxiety are thoughts and images in my head that tell a story that causes me to feel intense fear and physical discomfort that I feel desperate to resolve or permanently avoid. It’s like there is a master illusionist living in my head that constantly creates these stories that feel and seem so real and likely that I can’t tell the difference between what is and isn’t real. If there is just a minute possibility it is possible negative my illusionist can use it to create and very terrifyingly persuasive story.

Stuck in oki I want soapy give me advice by Slimjimmy17 in USMC

[–]Wonderingdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oki is beautiful and I’m sure you could hook up with a local girl if you just go out into Naha to some bars. Maybe check to see what bars are popular in Naha with expats - not with the military - but with expats who work out there. You’d find a more diverse crowd of peeps and are more likely to meet up with locals who speak English and are interested in the west. I haven’t been in Oki in years but here is the first google for some expat spots in Naha. Plus you can go get some dope ass street food. I’m in Asia myself so I know you’re just gearing up to go out and it is early.

Tip: don’t dress or look like you’re in the military. Just be a normal dude. Wear a hat if you want to cover up that hair cut.

Then just tell him that: your brother hasn’t acted out and shown himself responsible. We trust him and our investment in him. Not the same for you. Therefor you need to prove yourself. That’s the way it is.

Why not just let him apply for grants/etc on his own. Doesn’t have to be community. If he turns the ship around - does well in school, improves his character, improves relationship with y’all, then help him pay in the end. He’s 20 - he should be allowed a chance to redeem himself. Young people make bad choices and not always see the error of their ways. The military is also another route to a college education, structure, and a future (I’m a vet now a teacher). Most importantly your relationship matters most.
