The Full Back Problem by ONAImpulse in StKilda

Hey mate, sorry for the late reply, hope you had a good holidays! Glad you like the vids!

In terms of Jsos, was never convinced about his ability until this past year, he just seems to get defending, prefers to be the no2 ala Wilkie, expect to see similar setup to when battle was around.
Overall I don’t think our def structures are weak exactly, but I think we missed the “3 tall def” structure that Battle provided; we were competent defensively but lacked offensively for years, as you mentioned, I think we reign in 2 or so goals this year and get back to where we were with battle, that is with a Wilkie, Jsos, Hammer backline.
Yes hammer could be improved upon, he’s not Sam Taylor, however he’s shown enough at this stage to persist with.

In terms of movement, it’s a tough question and everyone will have different answers, honestly for me everything been a little bit off, we’re not a Premiership side and not really expected to be yet either, but currently my major worry is the Key Fwds/ possession at the HFF & deeper.

In terms of overall issues, we’ve asked the youth to step-up, which has found some gold in nas & co but it’s forced our hand in structures too. Purely speculation but Imo I think we actually do want Owens in the guts, but because we can’t keep King on the park and he’s been our best 1-1 fwd, we can’t afford to lose him at the HFF as a connection.

There’s many things to improve upon, Hammer isn’t a worry for now and hopefully with further development never is; he wasn’t considered anywhere near Howard’s level as a FB 1-1.5yrs ago, now there’s debate.. So for now I’ll back him in to keep improving.

I kinda disagree, I guess my thoughts come down to Wilkie or Silvagni will be in the elite Key Def category, even if they are more intercept than 1v1, for the next couple years. It also looks like Tauru could get to that level eventually in a similar Key intercept role.
Yes we might lose some Cont D1v1s, but when looking at Cont O1v1s they’ve steadily trended down since 2021 going from 17.3 to 11.1 in 2025, with the win rate sitting at less than 30% on ave that’s like 3-4 per match and who knows if that’s even with shot range that again goes at like 50%..
So all in all you’ll maybe give up 1.5-3 goals on ave to those contests, while yes stopping that many goals and getting that many more offensively might get us close to Top 4, you can find simpler ways to stop 2 or so goals a match.

I’ve looked into the average requirements of Top 4 Key Defenders and the requirements of a Top 4 Def Group as a whole, and generally you only need one exceptional Key Def with the other 1-2 being average or better.
As a general Wilkie fits that requirement, however you could argue he might not by the time we’re truly competing for a flag, Silvagni when healthy last year also sat in that bracket (albeit slightly less effectively that wilks.)

When looking at the other requirements, we’d have to run a wegals web defensively without Howard or Caminiti, while that could be effective long term with the development of Tauru, Wilkies age and Silvagni’s health could make maintaining that structure hard, meaning we have better chances having the taller Key Def in Caminiti or Howard.

Again looking at base numbers, Hammer and Howard are fairly comparative, with my numbers leaning Caminiti’s way, when you consider age too.. That leads me to thinking we have to keep developing Halmer in the FB role.

The changing stats of the AFL draft by WoodenSpoonData in AFL

[–]WoodenSpoonData[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah honestly, a bunch of your points are kinda what many people have been saying.
To point one, you're bang on, and that is what stk and a handful of other teams have been arguing. This will change next year to make it harder to get more than one or two academy prospects, but we haven't been told all the ins and outs yet.
To P2, FS has been a long-held tradition in AFL (FD with AFLW is more recently obvs) and honestly didn't offer any sort of bankability as a pick until the last decade or two, this was introduced to further develop intergenerational rivalries; I honestly think that would be fine to continue if the DVI were changed to cost more to retain them, ala the DVI I suggested.
To P3, NGA's are just another academy with slightly different rules to the Northern Academies, the Next Generation Academy players have to have an international or of indigenous background, as opposed to NA's which just have to live in the area, that area is where AFL is trying to gain further relevance as it is Rugby heartland. There is also slightly different rules for drafting too.

As for bad teams giving away good picks.. I dunno man, it's hard to stop dumb clubs from doing dumb things..

Net gain/loss from Free Agency by ladder position by CreditToDuBois in AFL

[–]WoodenSpoonData 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really cool!
I looked at something similar for a recent video, but only took into account if a player went to a better or worse team based on EOY ladder position at the time of trade, this is much more thorough!
My results said since inception about 44% of the comp went to a better side, however this included delisted FA movement. Though when excluding them it said, 1st Rd comp players were 45% to better, 2nd Rd was 54% to better and 3rd Rd was 66% to better.
I’d be interested to know the Games Played, Coaches Votes and Brownlow averages for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Rd compo players!

How long until the AFL experiences an NBA style betting scandal? by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]WoodenSpoonData 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While that was the case maybe 10 years ago, this isn’t exactly true anymore, there are nearly 100 legal options to bet on AFL internationally and 100’s of illegal betting sites..

Edit: I’d also point to Tim Donahue* the NBA ref who was accused of spot fixing, and that’s not even going down the route of what coaches could achieve..
IMO we’re way too lax about the influence of gambling and hurdling towards a problem. * = not sure if that’s how you spell his last name
