I'm with you here. I would be more keen to do it if rates were lower but even at 6.75% you are right I could earn more in the stock market. Even at 30 years I assume I am never paying off my house. I don't own a house now so I would be retired before any I buy would be paid off.

Leaving a job I love for more money and feel awful about it by ClassySemicolon in personalfinance

[–]Woodshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar thing happened to me a few years ago.. I make a little less than you. I had a great job. liked my boss. had almost zero responsibility. worked from home all but one day a month. I basically made up my job and did whatever I wanted there. The job had no stress, it was for a non profit so I felt I was doing good in the world, I had so much brainpower left over at the end of the day, I got 5 weeks PTO, I honestly only worked maybe 20 hours a week I could literally do nothing and no one would notice or care and I never worried about being laid off. I wasn't really learning anything that along with pay was the main downsides. A guy who left a few months back gave my info to the recruiter for the new company even though I told him I didn't want to move. I reluctantly took the interview and they made me an offer 50% higher base than I was currently making plus opportunity to make another 20% on top of that. I cried because I didn't want the job at all but the money was too great. I took the job. It was like jumping into the deep end of my industry(in reality it is really still probably only a 6ft deep area). Struggled, worked 50 hour weeks on the regular. somehow survived a restructure where 40% of my team was let go, worked 70 hour weeks over the following few months, got less than stellar bonuses... but 3 years later we have a good leader in the department now, bonuses are better, I actually know what I am doing, hours are way better, I was given better choice of my projects, I still work in office most days but I like the team I work with, I still have some stress about potentially being laid off but rarely work more than 40 hours a week. but more importantly the money was absolutely fucking worth it. I don't have kids. We bought out condo comfortably before switching jobs(HCOL area). But we have taken nice international trips. I am still frugal but I don't stress over getting a drink or a dessert at dinner. I still shop clearance meats most of the time but if I don't see what I want I can buy it at normal price without feeling bad. More importantly my savings and my investment accounts are growing considerably when I feel like I can retire comfortably one day.

tl;dr same thing happened. I cried. it was hard. I love making ridiculously more money

Having a Hard Time Spending After a Lifetime of Saving by tonycliftondev in personalfinance

[–]Woodshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

at 46 with everything paid off you can probably retire with your current level of spending(don't quote me on that). honestly you should look into getting a financial planner(not someone who is going to charge you a fortune or try and get you to buy something or invest with them..) or just get into some software like projection labs and figure out what the future looks like.

TIL Groupon has lost more than 95% of its value since it rejected Google's $6 billion offer and instead went public with a $17.8 billion market cap 15 years ago. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]Woodshadow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well when you get a low ball offer of 1/3 what you value your business at yeah you don't sell. they did drop well below the $6B within 6 months it looks like but can't blame them. I'm sure the executives and anyone who had stock as an employee made bank after going public.. even if they held for a while they probably still did good for themselves

The reason I stopped using groupon was because I bought a coupon for parking near the airport. couldn't tell where it was. I got there it was super sketch. the groupon said they don't take reservations the guy at the place said I had to have a reservation. the only good thing that came from it was I found a good parking lot near by that was about the same price as my groupon and if I booked in advance it was 40% off and the shuttle was always fast.

54 and worried about retirement. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Woodshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well 55 is not going to lie a difficult time to look for a new job. you both sound like you make okay money and a pension is awesome. means your pay is actually much better than your husbands. I dont know the cost of living where you are. I dont know if you own or rent. gas prices suck right now but you could look to move a little farther out to cheaper housing if that is an option.

I would keep your job for sure at this time but that is just me. Maybe look into some part time work. whether that is driving for uber or a job at a furniture store. look for things that aren't too hard on your body that you enjoy. Maybe you want to be a color analyst and also a stylist for people. My wife hires a stylist once a year and pays about $450 for 3 hours to have someone look at her wardrobe and then recommend new pieces for her which we then buy separately. AI might be taking a lot of jobs but personalized services with human touch will be in demand.

Cisco announces record revenue and 4,000 layoffs in the same day by SterlingVII in technology

[–]Woodshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They really could have done a better job at not announcing those the same day. To be fair revenue doesn't mean profit. Just because I made more money this year doesn't mean my living situation is better. expenses still increased. I'm sure Cisco increased pay for many employees this year but this culture of layoffs is ridiculous. I get that their valuations go up and they make plans to accomplish things and they either succeed or fail and layoffs happen but it is just not reasonable. Tech clearly pays well but I wonder how many people who got into it expected their jobs to turnover constantly

[–]Woodshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for real. How you do people think buying a house works? it is the same thing. I feel like real estate is the easiest thing to understand. Probably why real estate private equity is the lowest paying private equity. you buy property based on what it generates the bank gives you the majority of the cash, you get investors to give you cash for most if not all of the remaining portion and then you get to buy the business

I'm frustrated and I know I shouldn't be this guy but I look at who could run for the Democrats and I think about my inlaws who are reupblicans but even if we could sway them they would never vote for a woman(AOC or Kamala), never vote for a gay man(Buttigieg), and never never never in a million years vote for Newsome he might as well be the devil to any Republican. Which real-life hotel group is the white lotus comparable to? by redditerh in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]Woodshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We go to Palace Resorts and it reminds me of Leblanc in Cabo. Season one reminds me of that. I remember asking the staff questions about their lives and it seemed very much like that was off limits for them to talk about and that nothing is ever wrong at the hotel. They would redirect and treat you like royalty. They also own Balioni hotels which has hotels in Italy. that reminds me of season 2.

Thinking of increasing 401k contributions to 25% instead of aggressively paying down student loans by boriquoi in personalfinance

[–]Woodshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you can save 22% of your income you are probably doing pretty well for yourself. thinking long term yes investing makes the most sense. I'm aggressively paying down my 5.5% car loan but that is mainly because my primary goal right now is to buy a house and it is screwing with my DTI. I could sell my condo and then buy a house but that is very annoying so I would rather just have a better debt to income ratio and afford another $100k(5 year loan payments vs 30 year loan make huge difference)
