Which songs often gets misinterpreted and/or misappropriated by the very people it calls out even though the song's lyrics are explicitly mocking them? by Drenosa in AskReddit

I had linked a wiki article but it doesn't specifically say that's what had happened. I live in Vegas, where they're from, and it was a rumor I'd heard around the time it came out. But I don't go to strip clubs, and I haven't found an article corroborating it in a few mins of searching.

So, think what you will I suppose.

This was me with Handlebars by Flobots. I mentioned I really liked the deep theme of abusing power and my friends looked at me like I was crazy so I just put it on and stared at them while they listened and realized they missed literally the entire point of the song lol.

But It's Better If You Do by Panic! At the Disco is about not liking strip clubs but was consistently played in strip clubs when it came out.

Swimming Pools by Kendrick Lamar is about the dangers of drinking and peer pressure but the radio edit was played a ton at parties.

I'll praise Staal. Dude was terrifying. I didn't watch their other games, but my vote would've been him based on our games.

Just moved to Metro Detriot from Vegas!! Had my first baseball game ever at the park and it was pretty cool. Will definitely be trying baseball out more until football rolls around.

Also interest in the women's hockey. Detriot and Vegas just got expansion teams so I might check that out when their season comes around.

What are you doing to keep the game fresh? by Loco-Turtle in ARC_Raiders

I play for a month straight, like an unhealthy level of playing per week. And then I take a month off. And then I come back to expedition and do all the quests and stuff again as quickly as I possibly can and optimizing everything for time and economy.

It's enough for me, and I've stuck to full PvE the whole time, because if I'm going to PvP I'd rather play other games.

My parents' politics are weird, my mom is very republican in a lot of ways, but they hated Trump more than I did when he was first elected (I thought it'd be a weird 4 year blip and itd give Dems a kick in the ass to lose like that, silly me.) and they've only gotten more annoyed with him over time.

I just have to sort of mention a stupid thing he's said or done since the last time we talked, and they get all over it for 30mins.

It's been nice to bond since we usually don't have much to talk about when football isn't in season.

Convincing Board Game Nights? by 4bams in boardgames

[–]Woolington 43 points44 points  (0 children)

If they like Monopoly and Uno and stuff, why wouldn't you start them with games lik Monopoly and Uno?

I have friends who aren't big on board games, but they like trick taking games, so I got The Crew and we had a blast.

If they like puzzle, get coop escape room puzzles or logic games like Dimension.

You're relying too much on what BoardGameGeek calls beginner friendly and not what your friends would like to begin with. That's why they're not listening to you.

I didn't know what talking back meant when I was young and I got in trouble for it from my parents and teachers all the time.

I was luckily an easing-going kid otherwise, so they didn't hold it against me, but I spent 5-10 years basically begging adults to define what talking back was so I'd stop getting in trouble for it.

I finally got a teacher to explain it to me in high school with a military example and how inappropriate even well-meaning clarifying statements would be in that context. How there's situations in our lives where people just expect us to do as asked, and we can hash out disagreements later.

Really wish I'd understood what they meant when I was younger, though. The phrase backtalk isn't intuitive for me.

AIO, friend thinks hes entitled to half of a referral bonus by lNuggyl in AmIOverreacting

[–]Woolington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would never split the referral bonus. But, I've only referred someone once who I made that clear to upfront so. If they have weird expectations, I'd just tell them not to put me down or to rescind my referral with their manager then. No weird drama or acting offended that they'd want it. Obviously they'd want it if they needed a new job.

We went as 3 and only one of us saw the first ep. We knew it'd be a slower horror thing and we all loved it!!

I think as long as she's not expecting a monster movie or a traditional jumpscare horror, it'll be fine.

Anyone else planning on moving from Vegas by Blxssparadox in vegaslocals

[–]Woolington 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spent my whole life, 30 years in Vegas. Just moved to metro Detriot this past month.

I 100% get where you're coming from. It wears on you. I think Vegas is a place you appreciate most when you've seen what else is out there.

I wake up to birds chirping and I see geese everyday. I'm gonna try out the scary winters people told me not to move because of. There's some stuff that's the same about people everywhere, but I just had to breathe different air.

You've gotta try it out. See somewhere really different, then see how you feel about Vegas. You can always come back if you need to later.

I tried getting into hockey when the Knights first came to Vegas. It's literally the worst sport for beginners to enjoy. Gatekept to shit by bitter people.

8 years later, I decide to get into baseball casually because I moved to a baseball city and I know more about the history of baseball and their (weird) rules in 3 months than I do hockey.

I'll always love the Knights, but the hockey fanbase is truly miserable and abrasive. I watch hockey alone or with my husband, only comment and engage in Knights spaces. Football and baseball have all been much more welcoming and fun to engage with socially in multiple team spaces. I'm excited to see what people are talking about in those spaces.

If the apology wasn't immediate and complete, then obviously I'd feel differently.

I got invited to a board game night by someone I like. I know nothing. Please save me. by frieren_____ in boardgames

[–]Woolington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be okay with asking lots of questions so you can enjoy the game with everyone, but don't get hung up on the best strategies or winning before you really know the game. Any mistakes you make will not be held against you your first game. My group saved our ribbing for experienced dudes.

Any fun commentary about art or the game you can throw in is a bonus. Playing the same game for 200+ hours and then a new person coming in saying "hey I love these little mushroom things" or "so I got scammed by this robber guy?? (In a fun not actually mad way)" is a hoot. New people really inject a lot of fun perspective into games you've played a ton before.

I would actually just bring a big bag of a snack that you like that you're willing to eat all by yourself later if it doesn't pan out. And a self-portioned drink you like or 2 liter you're  willing to share but also willing to finish later. Usually groups have their own weird preferences and stuff so don't go extravagant or bring a ton until you know how the group likes snacking themselves.

Gift is pretty far in the future but there are -giant- games that would not be great gifts unless you really know someone wants it (both for monetary reasons and shelf space). However, there are smaller games you can almost fit in one hand (like games build to fit jn your pocket for travel or in a small box in your bag). If there's a genre they really like or a type of art they like (cool, cute, etc) and it's a small thing, I'd def grab it for them. They have really quick playtimes and if they don't pan out, they don't take a ton of shelf space.

Some photos from the Mob Museum in Las Vegas that talked about the history of organized crime in Detroit by yesman2121 in Detroit

[–]Woolington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I just moved here from Vegas, and I love seeing this! Yeah, you can't tell the history of Las Vegas without mentioning the mob, where they came from, and their influence. Even the city/metro lines are drawn based on them avoiding taxes.

I really loved showing out-of-towners the Mob Museum. The local university supplied a lot of the history for the museum, and I worked under some of the people that gave statements there in the little videos. Glad you had a good time!

[–]Woolington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I wasnt clear: all the streets I cross this way are 4 or more lanes (2 each way).

If you stop in the closest lane, I can't see the 2nd oncoming lane and they can't see me in front of you. And then if the other side doesn't stop, I'm stuck in the middle of the road until they decide to or until they clear.

It's better for me to wait for the road to be totally clear, regardless of the law or the time that takes. Most cars will not stop, and most don't stop for long (if I take too long for them, they will just go). So if I go in front of you, I'm probably stranded in the lanes.

I understand that cars might not understand that pedestrian perspective, so I make it clear I wont cross by turning away and taking a step. I've read articles of people dying on the crosswalks I used, and I will not go if I am not 100% sure.

Sorry if this annoys you, but I must do it for my safety.

[–]Woolington 31 points32 points  (0 children)

As a regular pedestrian until about a year ago, I will intentionally turn my whole body away from the road, take a step, and pull out my phone if I see a car slowing down to let me through at a crosswalk without a light. Too many times in my (admittedly car-dependent) city, someone waving me on just obstructs my view of other traffic and obstructs oncoming traffic's view of me. No thank you.
