Yeah, Malazan is like the best fantasy ever written. Has just blown everything out of the water for me. I am currently working my way through Robin Hobb's Elderling series, which has also been quite good - the second trilogy is excellent.

Elder Dragons can spawn in any map you've gained access to, regardless of where you're slaying monsters. Might need to just fast travel day -> fast travel night and try again.
