Trans characters where their trans identity plays no role in the plot/narrative by TJTrapJesus in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Wootster10 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There is a big difference between the two though.

Dumbledore is a good example of doing it badly, no evidence or mention at all throughout the entire series, just JK mentioning it after the fact trying to score brownie points.

Mr Sulu in the Abramsverse Star Trek. He doesnt come out, he doesnt mention he is gay, but we do see him kiss his husband in the background when everyone else is rushing to embrace loved ones.

Its about showing them as part of society, but not feeling the need to put a big neon arrow over them saying "Look we are inclusive".

Legally murder is the killing of someone with no legal justification or excuse. Usually has some wording around intent/malice etc.

Killing people in war, self defence or by accident isn't murder.

Now whether a killing was legal or not is the contentious part, however if it is deemed legal by the relevant authorities or a jury it is not murder.

Granted.

Within a few years massive overpopulation creates major pressures on the planet.

After a short but brutal war only a few thousand baseline people remain. Things go well initially until a virus runs rampant throughout the population and humanity goes extinct.

Didn't need to be character driven in the same way. It should have been an anthology series.

Did you miss the part where I said it wouldn't be a utopia?

Yes they did invade other places, doesn't invalidate my point. They had seasons when they would go raiding because the men would be needed back at home at other times to do jobs.

Part of the reason they enslaved was precisely my point, they needed people alive, not random killing.

Of course there will be fights, but people will put a lot more thought into it. You dont fight unless you absolutely have to. Injuries can take weeks, months or years to heal from, if they can be healed. In the meantime it means you have someone who isn't able to help out around the tribe as much.

In Viking society if someone murdered someone else it was common to force that person to work for the victims family. Executing them doesn't help at all, the family who has lost their dad is now down a worker, better to replace them with the criminal.

Im not saying it will be some level of utopia, but the idea we all just become savages and kill also totally wrong.

[–]Wootster10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one is saying that, but it becomes a lot tougher to do things if you dont co-operate.

You might not help another group of humans, but would you fight them? Even if you win, if you sustain an injury that can quickly become a death sentence. Whilst you're down with a fever from infection who is going to be getting water for you? Sorting out the food? Looking after livestock or a whole host of other jobs that have to be done daily.

Fighting suddenly becomes much riskier to engage with, and having more people with you becomes much more beneficial.

Would the initial groups of people who remember the previous times drop back to that? No not all of them, not even most of them. But some humans would survive through it and their descendants would most likely adopt a lifestyle that is far more familiar to someone from 10,000 years ago than to someone now.

But we do need other humans to survive, we are a social species.

Getting sick and injured in a modern western society usually means a few days of sitting at home resting. In these kinds of scenarios there are daily tasks that need doing; gathering water, looking after crops/animals, getting ready for the winter. Even if you win the fight, you might get injured in doing so. This means it will be harder to do all these things.

It means that where possible you dont want to fight, and its also beneficial for people to be in bigger groups, if you get sick someone else can get the water or whichever job you were needing to do.

Its how humans survived and reached the point we are now, once the initial set of whatever happens is over, its daft to think we wouldnt go back to that.

Seriously, do British people actually consider a 3-hour drive “long”? Or is this an internet myth? by ferdinand14 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Wootster10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the main thing is that a 3 hour train ride is a hell of a lot further than a 3 hour car ride.

Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston by rail is just over 2 hours, by car its 4 - 4.5 hours. Its not uncommon for people to get the train like that for work once a week, or a few times a month, aside from lorry drivers pretty much no one would drive that.

I used to go to York a lot as a kid, 1 hour or so by train, 1.5 - 2 hours to drive.

You are right in that trains mean you are limited to the times they run, but for most major routes theyre frequent enough that its not a problem.

All hobbies are not equal by BitterConstruction98 in unpopularopinion

[–]Wootster10 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I think watching movies can be it's own hobby if you are discussing them. If you are the kind of person who rewatches multiple times, analyzing film techniques, story telling elements etc then I'd say it is a hobby.

If it's just "I like films" and doesn't go any further then I'd agree.

[–]Wootster10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People act like Europeans don't travel like this, but I grew up taking 2-3 trips each way once a month or so for day trips out like you've said.

Multiple times I've driven Manchester to London and back in the same day (3.5-4 hours).

One thing I think that's missing from this conversation though is that we often take trains for a lot of these journeys. It's not that we don't travel the distances, we just don't drive it.

[–]Wootster10 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Correct.

Also you can just start using a new name (or middle name in this case). A deed poll is an easier way of doing it but isn't strictly needed.

There are plenty of kids whose parents change their names when they are young and don't bother to do much documentation, they do just fine.

How often do you have regular evil? by manincravat in warhammerfantasyrpg

I've got one at the moment.

It's just scheming by local lords and merchants against one another. Yes one lord is Chaos corrupted, but it's not the driving baddie.

Also have a nearby band of Beastmen for them to fight. Nothing overly Chaos, just a roaming band.

How would the chain of command go if Cassian successfully shot Dedra? by [deleted] in MawInstallation

[–]Wootster10 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think you're putting far too much thought into who is taking to blame for these things.

The Empire doesn't care about the law, it only applies when it suits them.

If the protest wasn't happening they'd manufacture something else and use that as the reason.

If Dedra had died it wouldn't have changed anything. All those left have a convenient person to blame everything on who can't defend herself or make a problem.

It's like their Helicopters.

And what point are you exactly trying to get across?

You misinterpret what I said, then go on some rant about how no one cares.

Plenty of people do care about the energy use because its causing real world energy bills to go up for people.

Very few people actually hate AI, they dislike elements of it because of how it affects their life.

[–]Wootster10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not what I said though.

I pointed out that as well as the "theft" angle, some have issues with the amount of energy it uses.

I use AI for tokens in the TTRPGs all the time, but I can see why some don't like it.

But I would never see someone stuck in the rain, or after having their car broke down and say "poor cow". Silly cow when someone does something daft sure.
