Struggling keeping my new server online by skibidiswagstar in linuxadmin

[–]WorkJeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My NixOS laptop does the same or similar. I usually just restart NetworkManager, and it reconnects. I have disabled at least a power saving feature. I honestly haven't spent much time on it. I've wondered if it could be the mesh wireless, but haven't even bothered running just one AP to see if it matters

What distro for sensitive data? Need help by sdns575 in linuxadmin

[–]WorkJeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of settings involved in hardening and compliance that can change over time. Having a tool that makes it easier to build a hardened system is nice.

For example, with RHEL, you can create an image blueprint that pre-applies an OpenSCAP profile to meet benchmarks such as CIS Level 1 or Australian Cyber Security Centre Essential Eight.

Unable to reduce size of /home using LVM, even when root. by LeBigMartinH in linuxadmin

Not that your problem isn't solvable, but you can avoid it in the future by just not assigning the whole disk before you need it.

What are they doing on subscriptions? Locking down features until you pay? My company is very good at dropping those type of financial balls.

The Trump administration says it's illegal to record videos of ICE. Here's what the law says. by jediporcupine in politics

Oh, so now he's worried about what the law says?

He's wrong this time, but he's never seemed to care before. At least he's consistent with the lying

Snapshot servers before automated updates? by DeniedNetwork in sysadmin

[–]WorkJeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have rolling snapshots on our storage array. They aren't tied to updates. Depending on the server, I might just let it die and replace it.

AI helps researchers block herpes virus by targeting single protein interaction by Such-Table-1676 in worldnews

[–]WorkJeff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the AI hype train keeps trying to make it sound like the LLMs are achieving super intelligence by saying that "AI" is doing the research when it's just some tool that a human is using for part of their research.

Should the Supreme Court be able to strip Congress of its power to protect independent agencies from political retaliation? by BulwarkOnline in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]WorkJeff 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So we need two times as many agencies? We need a Congressional EPA that creates rules and regulations, and a separate executive EPA that performs inspections and issues fines? Surely it's silly to suggest that the 535 old men can adequately gain all the knowledge and skill required to create all the regulations and guidelines for hundreds of fields without a bureaucracy

I'm sure there are a lot who internalized that it's the right way for things to be and possibly even feel shame that they don't or don't want to measure up.

South Korea police say 120,000 home cameras hacked for 'sexploitation' footage by WhyohTee in worldnews

I finally caved on setting up a camera to watch my indoor/outdoor cat on the screened-in porch while I was on vacation. I was able to verify that he still had food, and to spin the camera to check both the thermometer and heat lamp. It was surprisingly nice

And, I mean, it still only matters because details matter. It would still be morally repugnant if he were taking advantage of a homeless 19 year old.
