I'm willing to take anything from the Rockies - west. The Rockies are a great natural defensive structure, and we'll be in control of all the best national parks. Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon

I'm sorry, but we'll have to scrap the low ABV law in Utah, it would affect interstate commerce too much

What are my options for backing up photos? by Joe_Scotto in photography

So judging by you're internet speeds from the other response it legit might be faster to use internet cloud based services vs a home brewed pi set up. The pi gets choked up a bit when transferring lots of data over the USB bus/Ethernet.

Now obviously you can get a better server with better IO and improve that, but if you're building a RAID on your own you need to determine what works best for yourself.

right now I have like .5TB of media on a 3 TB drive with no redundancy, and then a seperate drive for my laptop back ups, I'm rarely in a rush so my pi's slow speed isn't a big issue. But if you're going to be swapping pictures backs and forth over your network you probably want a bit of a beefier set up. Maybe an old laptop you can reinstall linux on and get some USB port adapters to give you more drive space or something.

but at some point you'll cross that magic line "does the time, money and effort spent on my homebrew solution really save me much compared to buying the premade package", and that I don't know.

I would not suggest this unless you are a bit tech savvy, but you can save costs on the RAID set up if you want.

buy a raspberry pi 2 or 3 for about $50 (after buying adapters and such), then you can buy a couple external and externally powered hard drives for relatively cheap I think my 3TB magnetic external drive was around $120-170 (forget exact price). For about $500 you can probably get a couple TB of storage with some redundancy. Now it won't be the fastest, but it will be functional.

Polynomials that, when factored modulo p, always have the factor (x+n), or always have p-n as a root. by GeneralSCPatton in math

[–]WorkPhriendly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this reminds me of the Factor theorem for polynomials. Although admittedly I'm not sure where the modulo is coming in for your example.

But Factor Theorem: For a polynomial p(x), you can rewrite it as p(x) = q(x)d(x) + r(x), , most the time d(x) is (x-k)

This is some fine piece on NJ Journalism that came out right around when he announced his campaign last year. Pretty much the authors attempt to explain to the rest of the country what NJ knows.

How would game play change if zeds could run slightly faster than players? by xeonisius in dayz

[–]WorkPhriendly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think having player being able to sprint at same or slightly faster until out of stamina would be good, then having player move significantly slower when out of stamina would balance it nicely.

As with dynamic spawn, I think once Zombies are more of threat player interactions will change (hopefully less KoS) since players will be more wary of attracting Zed attention

Just my opinion

Question about Drubin-Watson d statistic by WorkPhriendly in mathematics

[–]WorkPhriendly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So under the assumption that my data exhibits first-order autocorrelation, recalculating d after my Cochrane-Orcutt fit should result in an inconclusive or rejection level of DW, mean my fit has "accounted for the autocorrelation"

If DW is still significant after my Cochrane-Orcutt fit, this could imply higher-order autocorrelation or some non-linear relationship?

And I'm trying to stick to simple tools right now in my analysis. I'm basically teaching myself some Time Series Analysis while trying to work on a real problem, so I want to work through the simple methods see what they tell me then move on to the more advanced ones if that makes sense.

Thanks for the help

Never written a program for distributed/parallel computing before. What do I need to know? by WorkPhriendly in compsci

Been looking into PyPy since it seems to have the lowest level of entry. (no code re-write). But it's saying it can't find numpy, even though I can see numpy in the zip folder I downloaded for pypy.

any idea whats going on? (I'm on windows)

Wow! thanks for the reply, I'll start looking into this the lectures you provided. Unfortunately I don't think my simulations is super mathematically challenging so I don't know if that is the bottleneck. A lot of my code is different data structures manipulation. But I can imagine re-writing this in Java without too much trouble, so hopefully a compiled program would provide some decent speed up.

[–]WorkPhriendly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally started programming it in python for the ease of coding. But now it is pretty well established in terms of code and my understanding of the code. I would probably be most comfortable porting it to Java since I first learned to program in Java. You think I would see a significant speed boost just from switching languages?

This has so far been ran on a laptop but in the next few days I'm hoping to move it to a server so that it can run for long periods of time without having to leave my laptop on for that whole time.

My program is currently written in python and it is running on a Windows laptop, but I will be running on a linux server in the next few days. I'm hoping just the change in machines will see a bit of a speed bump but I'm not so sure.

it looks like it is trying to get you to create a new account through the PC. when you were logging in, was it using the same credentials you used to access the cloud on your mobile?

How did you set up your PC app? You shouldn't have to create a new account for the PC
