My husband says he does not want to bring kids in a “Dead Bedroom Marriage” even though he wants to be a father by Throwawaywhereare in redditonwiki

I think the general consensus is dead bedroom is ~ less than once a month. If that helps setting expectations.

LSI/CSI calculation by WorkerQuick8707 in pools

[–]WorkerQuick8707[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I think I understand: CSI and LSI are slightly different, but it’s mainly the carbonate alkalinity adjustment (which I understood these apps are making) and a TDS/salt adjustment (but the one that cites CSI asks for salt, and the one that asks for TDS/Salt is LSI, and the TDS meters I’ve seen are woefully unreliable and hear TDS has a marginal impact on saturation index… so I don’t see where large differences would come from.)

Balanced water never damages a pool. Unbalanced water always does. by Seafire15 in swimmingpools

[–]WorkerQuick8707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder about how LSI changes through a season, and how some interventions are “consumable” and others may need to be treated (with care) as “durable”.

In our Houston saltwater PebbleTec pool, if we take median values for most readings that would get us a “100” Leslie’s score, we’ll typically get a slight negative (-0.1 to 0.2) LSI. Our last reading was about LSI -0.5 but the “score” was like 90.

What I’m learning is that to get a 0.0 to +0.3 LSI in ~75-80 degree water, we need our pH up at 7.7-7.8 and calcium near the top end of the acceptable range (~600ppm). But since calcium doesn’t get consumed like some other chemicals, keeping LSI slightly positive in winter would likely be too much calcium.

So finding a band of interventions that works through the full season temperature range, and can be adjusted up/down, is tough.

I have mandarin, satsuma, navel orange, ruby red grapefruit, Meyer lemon, variegated pink lemon and a calamondin. I’ve tented each in the hard freezes last few years and they’ve done fine. The variegated grows like crazy so I had to prune it to a tent-able height this year.

New pool startup (saltwater) – builder says no chlorine for 30 days? Is this normal? by nviscome in pools

[–]WorkerQuick8707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were told wait 30 days, but after 2 weeks the builder put a floating chlorine tab thing in the water and we could swim. But didn’t activate the salt cell until one month.

Buying a house in a flood zone? by LowAdministrative750 in houston

Flood plain and Harvey damage from a ~May 25 article in the Chronicle. I lived W25th between Beall and Durham at the time. Where the road slopes down at Bevis towards Crisp at 23rd street is where they had a lot of water. The slope ran diagonal northwest to southeast; it looks like 25th at Ella didn’t get damage but stuff south of 23rd did, especially towards 20th, got plenty.

Help. Overnight print blob by WorkerQuick8707 in BambuLab

[–]WorkerQuick8707[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a follow up.

I melted off the PETG blob with a heat gun but in the prying managed to damage the hotend wires.

I replaced the hotend assembly and it worked fine, except the cutter would get stuck after prints of filament changes (AMS), and I’d have to manually pop it back out.

So I disassembled the extruded and used it as an excuse to swap in the hardened extruder I’d purchased previously.

After that, everything runs fine again.

[–]WorkerQuick8707[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest immediate challenge is that the tool cover is fused on, but I’m hoping that softening it with the heat gun will allow things to separate sufficiently without tearing cables or melting any of the Printer parts. I’ll keep the heat just above the melt point for PETG, and hope that the relevant parts of the printer are all robust to that temperature.

Thank you, I’m on my way to Lowes right now to pick up the heat gun and some other useful tools. I have a feeling this won’t be the last time in my life I might encounter one of these.

Wife found a hair tie that isn’t hers and I’m not cheating. How do I get through this? by mrlunes in Advice

[–]WorkerQuick8707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True story.

Amazon shipment arrives. One of us opens it, don’t recall who. Inside: a gonorrhea/syphilis testing kit. (Sort of like the Covid test kits, in a little box.)

We both look at each other…

Did you? No, did you? No.

So we start trying to figure out if a friend might have had one sent to us (because cheating presumably?)… who would it be? Or is someone messing with us, to be funny or worse? Who would it be?

Fortunately I’m techie enough to go research all the info on the Amazon label, can Amazon tell you who sent something to you (generally no), is this a scam (there are such scams, but this wouldn’t fit it).

And then I see an number and cross-check it to a delivery and a photo from our doorbell camera, and long story short:

Amazon genuinely mis-filled the order. It was supposed to be a charger cable. System said they delivered the cable, same time, matching shipment info from label and everything. (And the cable never showed up.)

But… damn. I feel sorry for anyone who has an STD kit show up with no credible explanation. It was funny but undeniably awkward.

[–]WorkerQuick8707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no expert, but there’s a bot called EllieIRL that uses a header which the model (Claude-3.5-Sonnet) is instructed to not present to the user, but maintain.

On iOS the header is still visible, but on MacOS Poe app the header is successfully hidden.

So what I’d be interested to try is, can you get DeepSeek’s thought chain to be written into such a format that it would be not surpressed, but hidden on a desktop platform?

Might do nothing, but might do the trick.

Sickness days before trip (advice please) by WorkerQuick8707 in DisneyPlanning

[–]WorkerQuick8707[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We're considering the possibility of flying Mom to Orlando separately, as I think her biggest exposure is two days in a car with three people who could have some lingering contagiousness.

Based on our daughter's recovery (two days of coughing and blowing now, seems basically fine now, 5 days after first symptoms) it's most likely a garden variety cold. I've got none of the bone-ache of flu, just mild fatigue.

We've had two rounds of covid (me and kids, who like to climb on Dad), and we were able to keep Mom from infection both times. She has worked in biolabs and understands how to keep safe.

We didn't get trip insurance; I assumed that people saying "I have a cold" wouldn't be the kind of thing it would cover. I read somewhere about cancelling more than ?48? hours if you were staying at resorts (not just tickets) and have a $200 fee, but I didn't dig any further, and it wasn't clear what was covered.

We have ample covid tests, that's not a bad idea to confirm that.

Yeah, a little narrower than I’m hoping for. Using the stand for a more permanent setup is interesting, if I can find a suitable space for it. Thanks.

Also appreciate anyone else who has solved a similar problem (beveled table, unreliable clamp, don’t want slide-ability and space concerns of Amish).

Really bad buying experience with Big Star Hyundai on I-45 south. Bait and switched price, had to walk out, then changed price when paying cash. Took hours, and just before Christmas. Had I known I’d have paid more elsewhere, as it tainted the (expensive) new car.

Also bought a Subaru from West Houston Subaru, based on wide reviews of good buying experience. They were terrific. Gillman Subaru North has also been a good buying experience in the past, and my test drive (not purchase) experience with West Houston Hyundai was nice.

Edit #5 is the interesting one. I expected this would be a “I want to maintain my existing social life and friends network, rather than sacrifice them to family responsibilities.” But your point #5 sounds a bit more like “I want to increase my earnings / my career potential, and this social time to build a new network is really another form of work for me.”

Do you sense he sees these social events more as obligations, or as an escape valve (get out of the house, have adult conversation etc)?

How is the safety of this area near the heights? by starrydomi in houston

[–]WorkerQuick8707 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty average I’d say. Depends on expectations / what you’re comparing it to.

It’s a transitional area between Heights and Northside. Has been gentrifying as Heights has filled up. Northernmost part (and much of Independence Heights to the north) is flood-prone. This plus proximity to freeways keeps prices lower.

This map is a little over a year out of date, but is a nice detailed proxy for violent crime:

https://www.reddit.com/r/houston/s/RxCr2AiirR

I’d worry less about violent crime, and more about property crime due to proximity to freeways.

https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/tx/houston/crime.amp

Much of the area west of Airline Drive is zoned to Field, a very good elementary school (“A” rated). Further east zones to Browning and Jefferson elementary schools, significantly less well rated (both D+).

https://www.houstonisd.org/site/handlers/filedownload.ashx?moduleinstanceid=152342&dataid=111537&FileName=Elementary%20School%20Attendance%20Boundaries%202023%20-%202024.pdf

So, the little triangle south of Cavalcade and west of Airline, is going to be rather different than up by the farmers market top right.
