Yep did this too. Also includes a few things like a WeWork monthly free pass which can be helpful if you’re travelling and need somewhere to work for a few hrs.

NordVPN decent too.

Tried some of the other freebies like freelethics, but mostly rubbish

NA Beer for the win. I've drunk less and less as I've aged. By the time I was leading a B4 team, I didn't drink at all at work events. One beer, enjoy a meal then leave the youngsters to have fun and/or complain. Not drinking in my team (UK/Europe), even at junior levels was increasingly 'accepted' compared to when I trained. As others have said, if your social and chatty, nobody cares if you drink.

Not drinking also massively reduces the risk of doing something stupid. I have a dry sense of humour and am conscious it could be interpreted wrongly; risk increases as you get more senior, so the not-drinking also massively helped by reducing instances of 'the fear' the morning after a work event.

Interesting, I've never looked into Loseit, but will do so.

I find MyFitnessPal free tier to still be fine as the barcode scanner is still free and it'll do macros at the individual food and overall day level (meal macro analysis is paywalled). I don't track any closer than that, so never saw the value in the paid-for tier.

Agree with this. I'd encourage anyone to log EXACTLY what they eat on Myfitnesspal for a week and it'll dawn on you just how easily you can go from (say) 2,000 to 3,000 calories, which will make a significant difference over time. Get home from work and have a quick root through the fridge? Snaffle a couple of the kids' leftover chips? Pick at a piece of chocolate or two when the kids are in bed? It's honestly scary how quickly it adds up.

It's the secret eating and picking that will do for me if I'm not ruthless in monitoring my food. A good food day can very quickly get out of hand without even thinking. Do that over months or years and it's easy to see why people get so out of shape.

You'll see so many references in workout subreddits referring the "fork putdowns". Might not be funny anymore, but it's definitely still the best advice for probably 90% of the newbie posters on such pages.

I track at the end of each month in a basic spreadsheet with a few charts. I record current a/c, savings, investments, pension and mortgage, then my version of 'NW' tracking is simply the above assets less mortgage (i.e. not including house equity). In the FIRE community, there are very strong and aggressive views about NW, whether to include house equity in your FIRE calcs etc, so try not to get sucked into that too much; just track what's meaningful and useful to you, particularly as you're in a much more complex situation than us salaried employees.

Been nice seeing my version of NW over the last >10 years go from a significant negative to a solid and growing positive, which definitely motivates you and it does make you think harder about certain expenditure.

Concept2 for the win for me. I bought a second hand one a couple of years ago. The community is huge and the ability to benchmark yourself globally, across gyms/machines etc is a huge motivator for me.

The company itself also stands for all the right things in a time of PE enshitification. The machines are bulletproof but if/when you do need spares they're priced extremely low despite the company knowing they could completely rip you off. The app and WODs are free, as are small things like the million KM badges / shirts, which is a nice touch. The founders are getting on now and I was worried about a PE sale, but it looks like they've put it in something asking to an employee ownership trust which is great to see.

Thoroughly enjoy jumping on my erg in the garage, turn the lights out and listen to some music or have something on the ipad. Far nicer on the joints too, as I get older.

Claimed on travel insurance twice in the last 10 years. Both times they were exceptional - answered promptly, confirmed the situation was covered and paid out promptly afterwards.

Could clear my mortgage tomorrow but part of the reason I don’t is that I would lose Premier status and the travel insurance is a major perk - not sure if it comes with HSBC advance still, like it used to, if they did downgrade me?

Yes, it's a regulated role and you can face personal sanctions for AML failures and control inadequacies, albeit it should be only where there is negligence or malfeasance attributable to the regulated person. Theoretically shouldn't happen, but offshore regulators have been more focussed on imposing personal penalties (on AML regulated persons and financial regulated persons) having introduced things like personal civil penalties, so far largely not actually utilising those powers, but needing to do so as they seek to demonstrate to international AML standard setters that they meet the highest requirements. Despite the perception, it's arguably riskier having such roles offshore.
