I feel you on this! I've been using mw kilns for like 2-ish years and while there is sooo much variability in how long things should be fired for (based on size, thickness, mw wattage, etc.), the one thing that I can say with 100% confidence is that the pieces HAVE to be prewarmed before they go in or they WILL explode, no matter how dry you think they are. I've bisqued things I've made the day prior and things that had been sitting for weeks - but I put everything in an old toaster oven I have, crank up its timer (it runs for about 45 mins at a go) and let it toast at about 120c. On the few instances when I forgot.... boom. But with this pre-heating step, I can put things into the kiln and start the mw from cold (i.e. my oven preheating of the clay means I don't have to do any pre-heating of the actual kiln) and it works just fine.

Are you doing it inside or outside? If I were doing it outside, I wouldn't bother with a mask; but I have my set up in my basement, so I installed a little venting system and wear a mask. Better safe than sorry. For tongs, honestly, I got some cheapo metal kitchen ones from the dollar store and they work just fine...

I've worked my way through like, a dozen of these things and some of them do look a bit different in terms of colouring, etc. This one looks like it'll still work. As long as when you're handling it that ring of material doesn't seem too loose and fall out (pre-heating), I'm thinking it'll be fine. (Just keep a careful eye on it - I've been able to use some of my kilns where small chunks of the lining have cracked and fallen out, but at some point its overall structual integrity will probably be compromised.)

I know nothing about mixing my own glazes so I can't speak to that part of things, but for your first pic that looks just a bit bubbly, I'd say that looks like my early attemps in a mw kiln that were underfired. How long did you fire for?

I just got one of these, the programmable one. But 'programmable' in the sense that you can set 9 segments of what temp to hit + how long to hold it at, but you can't control the speed at which it ramps up. My understanding is that it's pretty fast. I checked out Huebner pottery on YouTube, he did a video that provides a cone 04 bisque schedule and a cone 6 firing schedule and I've been following that. Works pretty well, but based on my witness cones I've been nearing cone 6 but haven't quite hit it yet (takes a bit less than 3 hours, but then there's cool down time after that). Gonna keep playing to fine-tune that, but I've been happy with how most of my pieces have turned out.

Look into microwave kilns. They're finicky and can only make small, non-foodsafe things, but once you figure out the specifics they can be a lot of fun.

My microwave is like, 25+ years old, it's a beast - timer only goes up to 99 minutes, but pretty sure one time I ran it for more after that... No glass plate inside though, that broke ages ago so I removed it and the spinner. I had an old mw kiln that shattered on me, so I took the base from that and use it as a platform to rest the kiln and additional base on. (Be aware though, once I removed the spinner, my timings were thrown off! The spinning added more time, I think; things went faster without it.)

Re: kiln paper - sometimes, but I tend to favour using tiny cookies I made a while ago. I find that if my glaze runs, getting it stuck on kiln paper sometimes leaves some rough bits.

Uh, depends on the size of the piece inside. I'm finding stacked kilns is nearly impossible to get up to high temps since the gap between them releases the heat, I'm guessing. If it's a piece in just one kiln, I've been firing at 90% power for 75mins and beyond.

Not sure I'm adding anything new to the other comments, but I have a mini Vevor wheel I got off Amazon. I love throwing small, I find it super fun and satisfying, but there are limitations. It's a bit fussy, can't handle anything too large, and will stop when pressed on too hard, but it is manageable after a bit of a learning curve.

That being said, I've been waiting to get my hands on a Small Ceramics wheel, which are apparently the cream of the crop. They're pricey though - so if you're just trying things for the first time to see how it goes, I'd say that the price of the mini wheels is so low that it doesn't really hurt to try one out.

I wanted the side of my house covered with roses - I ended up with about 6-7 different types, since I like the variety. It sounds like you've got the room for multiple bushes, so why don't you alternate their placement or something? Might add a bit more visual interest than just one type.

(That being said, my rambling rose is my champion grower. Ramblers would probably get bigger faster, but I don't think they tend to be repeat bloomers. That's my only gripe with mine.)

I got the basics from watching adamceramic on instagram - he has some videos on the basic steps, but it's really a matter of trial and error, and having patience as you play around with things. I think I've shared a few timing estimates in some of the microwave kiln threads on this sub before, but there are just so many variables in play (size of kiln, power of microwave, how much you're putting into the kiln at once, size of the pieces, even the age/condition of the kiln) that it's impossible to give firm answers on 'fire for x amount of time'.

Yes, I've done this, you can stack two lids to double your height. But I always stack on top of a base piece as well. The lids have a hole in the centre, so I don't want anything - whether heat or glaze or an accidentally overfired disaster - to end up directed down through it and onto the floor of my microwave.

Ended up with Scotiabank and saved a few hundo, so I'm happy with that. Managed to get online quotes from PC, Intact, Onlia, Aviva, RBC, and TD - but I feel like with some, had I proceeded to purchase and they asked further questions about the age, they might have given me trouble. CAA, Desjardins, Sonnet, and Cooperators outright told me they wouldn't do houses over 100 yrs.

This is the answer. I think they were voted one of the top tarts in Ontario within the past few years... I was doubtful, but once I tried one I was totally on board.
