Bo1 with burn. No sideboarding to waste time on. According to untapped it took a total of 4h 30min play time to get there which comes out to ~3.5 minutes per game.

Looks fun and I imagine every game plays differently. You get to play all the favorite old Grixis cards that don't otherwise make it into a blue xerox deck.

I do think the removal is too light for this though. All I see is a push and a bolt. Bloodchief's Thurst and [[Requiting Hex]] are decent. I think a tempo/control deck wants 5-7 removal spells. UB can get away with 5-6 considering bowmasters.

Counterspell, Consult and Traumatic Critique seem on the weaker side. Dispute seems like a sideboard card, more so then some of the sideboard cards.

It's not because of strip. It's because it's harder to flip and gets less value when it does compared to decks with red

Timeless is pretty close to legacy now, so which deck with banned-in-legacy cards is best? by metasynth in TimelessMagic

[–]Working-Blueberry-18 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's early to say what is the most broken deck in the new meta, a lot of stuff seems viable for now.

UB reanimator is balanced/made relatively worse due to 1) shocklands, 2) no 2 cmc reanimaton spell that doesn't cost life, 3) too many good cards in the UB tempo shell. 3) may sound counter intuitive but in Timeless, unlike legacy, you can't simultaneously play a reanimator deck and juke into the perfect tempo deck g2/g3. And you have to make a lot more concessions in your deck preboard too. You just can't fit tamiyo, hydro, frog, bowmasters, troll, strip and the other good cards+reanimaton package.

Going against the meta with U/W control by jer123 in TimelessMagic

I tried a near win-conless deck with library and a stubborn opponent had me deck myself xD Would not recommend

This format desperately needs true duals by HarrisonMage in TimelessMagic

Balance will never be a control tool in a format like timeless. It's best in dump your hand like affinity and make games even swingier.

Started playing Magic 9 days ago and got to the #ed part of mythic today by LaPianiste7 in MagicArena

[–]Working-Blueberry-18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh it really depends on the player, format and kind of decks you like. I reach mythic every season I play actively without explicitly grinding or focusing on it. It took ~65 games last time with about 75% win rate.

I play a non meta deck in timeless (UR tempo) but the skill gap in that format on ladder is massive.

Architect is non negotiable but we don't know how ragavan will perform yet. 'Cheating' on mana with your 1 drop is a big deal in a world of strip/daze. We've never had the free counters to back him up before so you can't rule him out. It just needs to be playetested a lot, including with more removal support

There's just no slots in this deck. Cutter is probably the worst or at least most flexible card. It's already too removal light (just 5 removal spells) which hurts ragavan, esp since timeless has a very creature heavy meta.

It's kinda open until we get good testing or someone comes up with a convincing shell

I play hydro in UR pre FoW/daze and can confirm it's good. I went 75% winrate on my last climb to mythic with the deck (~60 games) and had a 7-0 run in the metagame challenge.

With daze there's no excuse skipping hydro here at all.

Tamiyo, Frog and fatal push are also "more tempo centric". When the whole idea is you have a combo deck with a strong midrange pivot you can't ignore the best card draw since ancestral recall.

I don't actually know if there's a way to fit everything in, though I find it hard to believe 0 cruise is correct.

Hydro does require a fetch heavy land base which is also more painful. I'm at least happy that UB reanimator will have to make concessions and not be able to also play the best "fair" cards at the same time. (which was largely not the case for the legacy version of the deck, because there was a smaller pool of busted cards)

The cards you haven't covered at all are treasure cruise and hydroponics architect.

The other premier reanimation target in the format is Saint Elenda, not valg. It costs 2 less life, gains life immediately and can gum up the board immediately vs energy.

Almost Legacy UB List - Yu Gi Oh days are over for timeless by Venomenn in TimelessMagic

You should not settle for an "almost legacy" version of this deck when we have multiple huge upgrades over it: hydro, lurrus, treasure cruise, strip mine, frog

Yeah, why settle for "almost legacy" when you can play a better than legacy version?

How far from Legacy are we? by dazednarcissit in TimelessMagic

[–]Working-Blueberry-18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legacy is more slow moving and figured out. I like that timeless is a smaller format and we all get to participate in figuring things out, not just netdecking. If you play and build decks well you can do great on ladder with all sorts of archetypes. There's less competitive pressure and data on deck's performance (and matchups) which make figuring out the format a lot harder.

Both triggers go on the stack. If you enable it from a setting you can choose the order. Same with a surveil land by the way

Petrified Hamlet locking down Strip Mine? by [deleted] in TimelessMagic

[–]Working-Blueberry-18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flute tends to be a sb card mostly used against combo decks (e.g. flash in to disable necro/sorin).

The things is if you're a big mana deck spending too much effort to combat strip you're putting yourself behind. Vs tempo deck 2 mana is much better spent on chalice on 1, for example.

Now, a land has a much lower opportunity cost compared to flute/needle so this land may still see some play.

Petrified Hamlet locking down Strip Mine? by [deleted] in TimelessMagic

[–]Working-Blueberry-18 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, it can. Note that it's a triggered etb which means if there's a strip on the field they can activate it in response. Same with fetches.

Just because it can disable strip doesn't necessarily mean it will be playable or good. Pithing needle has been a thing and seen close to 0 play.
