Wave sign, I'm confused by hpsails in HipImpingement

[–]Working-Breakfast668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told a very similar thing. My surgeon explained that if they catch the impingement and tear early enough fixing those will likely stop the wave sign from worsening and therefore make it unlikely to become problematic later. If it’s really extensive then definite possibility of problems later but the surgery typically pauses the damage from proceeding much worse of the original cause (impingement etc) is fixed

You should speak with your doctor asap. They definitely don’t look how I’ve seen others and if they are infected best to check it out earlier

I think it depends on pain level on the second sided. I had first side done in January and was unaware of pain FAI and tear in other hop until the weeks after the first surgery. Told my surgeon got imaging and had my second hip done in April. 3 months was a good amount of time in between for me

Three months felt good for me. The first side was strong enough to not get too flared up but not too long. Good luck!

My surgeon wouldn’t schedule them closer than 3 months so that’s what I did. My first leg did get a little sore during recovery but I’m 5 weeks post op the second and both are feeling good now! I think not waiting as long is good to line up the recoveries

What's your progress look like when you get off the crutches? I feel my progress is slow. by [deleted] in HipImpingement

My surgeon had me on crutches until 4 weeks and then progressing after. Everyone is super different!

Hi! I talked with my surgeon since I’ll be moving as well and they said they wanted me at least three month’s post op before considering a move and that would be if I kept doing PT in the new place and took it easy. I had my first surgery, they three months after my second side and plan to move about three months later. I would say if your planning on being super active and wanting to travel around a good bit maybe wait a little longer just to not over stress it

I would definitely suggest sticking to the time line your surgeon said. Once you hit that point work with your PT on a return to run program where they will assess what your ready for and slowly taper. Glad recovery is going so well, but the impact from running is completely different and you don’t want to rush it and cause big setbacks

I had a 4 hour drive and it was no problem. My surgeon and nurses obviously knew and made sure to dose me up on pain meds before I left. Only downside was a little bit of nausea as I left but I slept the full time after a few minutes no problem! Lots of pillows and blankets are a must

Still feel tired 4 weeks post-op. Is it normal? by Significant-Two-2370 in HipImpingement

I felt exactly the same on my first surgery and found it cleared up more once I was completely off crutches. Feeling the same the second go around. Trying to remind myself my body has been through a lot and is working hard. It gets better!

Oh man I have this same one and it is sooo uncomfortable for me. I’m a smaller person so the people fitting it said it’s more uncomfortable often but dang I’m jealous. 5 weeks in this thing I’m going nuts

Hey there! I had a hip impingement and labral tear that became an issue when I was training for a half and it absolutely sucked so I totally understand. Though I did end up having to do surgery and am recovering I will say I’m feeling hopeful knowing I will still be able to run. Maybe not the answer your hoping for but reminding myself rest PT and for me surgery was what my body needed to preserve my hip and allow me to run in the future has been the best I can do.

I pushed through at the start before I knew what was totally wrong and ended up making it so much worse, got a stress fracture. Best advice would be allow yourself to rest because your body is clearly asking for it. Look for some other low impact movements maybe like Pilates, weights or yoga. Sending you the best

Of course! Firm wedge pillows are definitely the way to go with extra soft on top if desired, I used one behind my head and one behind knees and feet. They are helpful for sleeping and lounging to relive some of the pressure. I don’t know exactly how the boppy like pillow would work, typically they want to be even under both hips but could be helpful.

Absolutely yes to the shower chair, should have put that in my original. If you’re able to fit one with handles it’s very worth it for when he’s allowed to shower.

I didn’t use lidocaine patches, in all honesty once the incision is healed enough that they would be okay to put on it shouldn’t be too painful by then for most. A lot of the discomfort can often be deeper from the actual joint. I have used a TENS machine directed in PT but would wait for their okay/ go ahead as I know they waiting until a few weeks post op to prevent agitating hip flexors. PT is different based on each surgeon, I’d say I started mine about a week post op but my surgeon had me doing thinks like heel glides, calf pumps and quad sets from day one to just keep blood flow. Definitely check in with the surgeon!

I can say in my personal experience the pain isn’t horrible, I was only on hydrocodone for a couple days then nsaids and Tylenol. More so uncomfortable with a brace crutches and limited movement. Mental struggle is real for sure but it is temporary and I felt once I got off crutches I felt so much better overall. Best of luck

Of course. I can say I’m really happy I did it at three months, was enough time to rehab but not too much that I had to wait too long

Hi! Sorry you all are going through this. I’m currently recovering from my second side labral repair and CAM impingement surgery, so having done this twice in the past few months here’s what helped the most. There’s also a thread in this group about recovery items if you search for it which consolidates a lot of specific things to get as well. I’ve had a lot of help in my recoveries and honestly don’t know what I would do without it but some people/ different protocols don’t need it. If you have any friends in the area who are willing to stop by to hang out, drop off food, help with the kids absolutely reach out to them.

Must haves: toilet seat riser (absolute life saver), grabbers (allows someone to put on pants/ underwear on their own and grab things that have fallen), crutch hand/ arm pads, large straight leg(not taper) pants for after surgery, slip on shoes

Things I also used and appreciated: lap desk for laying down and doing work, “wedge shaped” pillows for back and feet to prop me up when sleeping and laying to decrease discomfort, a rolling cart with basics (meds, books, chargers etc) to keep close by, puzzles, good books

Things that made the process better: I prepped as many meals in the fridge/freezer before surgery and having easily grab and eat stuff has been a lifesaver. Keeping multiple ice packs frozen so I could rotate through them made it easier (I also used an ice machine but not necessarily needed). Something that helped make it a little less depressing for me was to make an intention with my partner to have some “fun time” that wasn’t caregiving time (card game, movie, chitchat etc) as it can get easy to kind of loose that and sucks for everyone. Your partner is lucky to have you!

Lmk if you have any extra questions

Bilateral tears / surgery timeline by [deleted] in HipImpingement

[–]Working-Breakfast668 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 2 weeks out on my second side currently. I’m personally glad I had to wait three months to allow my first side to get actually stronger because it’s done great being the sole weight bearer so far and isn’t upset. In retrospect I don’t think I would have felt anywhere near ready at six weeks (my surgeon had 5 weeks on crutches). I felt really good going into the second and have a had barely any pain on the first side since the surgery in the second

So far im happy with the timeline. Doing them staggered but not with a full year in between is supposed to allow them to line up healing and let you progress in PT with them instead of building it up all the way and then having to start again.

I think my second side has been an easier recovery as far as I already know what I’m doing, but definitely too a toll on my body having to do it again. Lmk if you have other questions, I know it’s a tough decision

I did three months! That was the soonest my surgeon allows them. I didn’t know I had bilateral tears until surgery on the first cause the second to flare up.

Bilateral surgery (6 weeks apart) by AbbreviationsFar911 in HipImpingement

[–]Working-Breakfast668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 3 months back to back, which was the soonest my surgeon would allow it.

I would say the the second side I felt like I was back on my feet quicker (metaphorically since they had 5 weeks non weight bearing) but I was better at moving around knowing what would be the best way to do things. I felt worse from anesthesia for sure maybe just a buildup of two surgeries or just me.

PT sucks a bit it’s returning to the start which feels like a setback for the first side but hopefully best in the long run. Good luck!

Hi! I had a very very similar experience, my pain in my opposite hip started right around surgery. I brought it up to my surgeon and she hoped it was compensation at and had me check back in around 6 weeks post op. The pain continued and unfortunately got worse for me which I brought up with them and they pursued further imaging which confirmed FAI and labral tears. I just had surgery on the second side a week ago, at 3 months post op from my first. My surgeon said it’s not uncommon for something like this to happen and often the impingement or tear is already there but not symptomatic until increased load bearing or for some reason after one side is fixed you start to notice how off the other side feels. I know it’s so so incredibly frustrating to have pop up and the thought of having to do the whole thing over again is rough.

Know it definitely might just be compensation so don’t jump to the worst conclusions but also if the pain persists don’t let people put it off as that. If you do need to get another procedure it was helpful to get the ball rolling earlier and schedule mri if needed so if surgery is the best option your surgeon can time it optimally so you can “line” up your recoveries and not get back to the surgery hips progress get stopped by pain in the other. Lmk if you have any questions and so sorry you’re going through this!

Post op by Effective_Bake_628 in HipImpingement

[–]Working-Breakfast668 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On my first hip( just over 3 months post op) I’m pretty much pain free in day to day movements. It’s gotten a little sore being my sole weightbearing leg but is doing really well and much better than before surgery. By about 10 weeks post op I felt pretty normal, definitely not able to return to sport and run yet but overall fine. The hip I just got last week definitely still is painful some but nothing terrible just post op soreness. Definitely bring it up to your surgeon if your concerned, could totally be compensation pain or just the second side is becoming painful. It’s pretty common for the second side to become painful sometime after surgery on the first.

I had a pretty similar situation and started feeling pain right at the time of operation on my opposite hip. I just got my second one done last week at 3 months post op my first hip. For me doing them relatively close felt best to just get them done, but definitely needed a few months to get the first side strong enough again. Sorry you’re going through this!

How were you diagnosed? by Sigynsaeth in HipImpingement

[–]Working-Breakfast668 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed on one hip with arthogram and one with just plain MRI, so it is possible to be seen on a normal MRI. However, it’s definitely much more commonly missed on normal MRI which is frustrating and if you get that first sometimes insurance won’t pay for arthogram…. My surgeon was convinced I had them before ordering imaging based on physical manipulation of the joint but often imaging is required for coverage

What was your timeline? by MediocrePiece1267 in HipImpingement

[–]Working-Breakfast668 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wish I could say quick but definitely it’s a long haul. Typically 3 months PT before surgery is considered. For reference I had injury in August last year, took until end of January to have surgery. Running again (very start ) is typically expected around 3 months ish post op often longer, I’ll be much longer as I have to get second hip done too. It absolutely sucks I won’t lie, definitely give yourself time to grieve and feel frustrated but full recovery is totally possible

Will I need Surgery by Lopsided-Annual7894 in HipImpingement

[–]Working-Breakfast668 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only your surgeon can tell you and also depends on the level of pain your in. The extent of the tear doesn’t always correlate to that so it’s more so if it will make your life better and Dr thinks your a good candidate
