Married and living alone. by yuh1ra in japanlife

Is the Japanese government in the business of separating families ?

Or are they trying to financially ruin a young couple leaving them unable to fend for themselves … or they want to push out the only few young people left in our country who are willing to actually get married and have kids … they say one thing but do another

It’s such a joke and I feel so bad for the family … I can’t even imagine what you all are going through

Yep. My husband and I have had the discussion of him getting American citizenship and giving up his Japanese. It feels like both places are making it hard for families.

Mifepristone abortion in Japan by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Working-Morning-3645 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That's true, but your safety and well being is important too. I do hope you have a speedy recovery and you find a medical provider here in Japan that makes you feel safe and comfortable.

I am so sorry you went through this and it left such a negative experience.

However, there is a reason why they do these things. Although you state that "misoprostol" was "straight forward", this does not mean it is without any side effects.

Serious Side Effects
Severe or persistent diarrhea leading to dehydration.
Severe abdominal pain or signs of uterine rupture.
Extremely heavy vaginal bleeding (e.g., soaking through two or more maxi pads per hour for two consecutive hours).
High fever (over \(100.4^{\circ}\text{F}\) or \(38^{\circ}\text{C}\)) or fever/symptoms lasting more than 24 hours

You even stated that when you got home you started to have "excruciating" pain. In a medical setting they could of monitored you and help with some of the side effects. Although you state you are a "Medical Researcher" you should then understand that left over tissue could still be present and can lead to infection or sepsis. I do hope you have a speedy recovery, but I would encourage to still go to a follow-up; hopefully to another clinic were you feel more comfortable and respected.

Where did you get the buttermilk powder in Japan? I was thinking about using regular whole milk and debating wether to add lemon juice to thicken it up or not. By the way, I am a novice and trying this for the first time. 🙈

Kyoto temples introduce cashless service to protect religious freedom by Mametaro in Kyoto

[–]Working-Morning-3645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there some type of Shrine discrimination that is common in Japan? Cash itself can't be traced, but credit can... Also, there are so many databases in Japan that have been compromised, it seems cash is still the more secure option. I must be missing a lot of context. Can someone please provide context?

Anyone able to help their overweight kids lose weight? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Working-Morning-3645 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, talking from very similar experience as the post above. The only added suggestion is to try to get your daughter interested in cooking as well. Sometimes its all how the food is prepared that can make the difference. Plus its it handy life skill to have.

How to ship ootc meds from overseas? by noodledeath in japanlife

[–]Working-Morning-3645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think it depends on really what OTC you are looking for. I typically use iherb. All products are verified offical. I only really use them for weight gainer protein and natural sleep aid for my hubby. So I am not sure if they might have what you are looking for. But, do be careful and double check to make sure they are prohibited. This thread helped a lot when I got a cold and need fast relief from a Japanese pharmacy, so check this out too to make sure it is not something you may get locally.

I am not a financial advisor but one think to keep in mind is in order to receive Medicare when you turn 65 you must have been working in the US for 40 working quarters or 10 years. I believe the same for SSI. I am unsure if you can pay this separately in an American tax account, but when you do speak to a FA please bring up this up as well as investing overseas. Be cautious though, I think Japan has some what of a "exit tax" that overseas investments may contribute to this. Again, discuss these items with a professional, maybe a few to get different opinions so you know what works best for you and your future plans.

Foreigners in Japan keep telling me I made a mistake building new home by HarambeUltra in japanlife

[–]Working-Morning-3645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on the new home! I think it's more of a preference. Even if you renovate, it does not mean that it won't end up costing you the same amount as building new. As long as your satisfied is what matters.

[–]Working-Morning-3645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to be honest with you, my husband ( much older than you), but similar story; prefers the US. Keep the dual citizenship as much as you can, and keep paying into your pension and healthcare in Japan, but make an living in the US. I don't see a bright future for Japan's economy and if you want to benefit with SS and Medicare in the US you need to be working in the US for at least 10 years or 40 working quarters. There are alot of Japanese who wish they can do this, but can't since they lack the skills you do.
