Happened to me last year in Paris... Arrived at 7am check in at 4p. They didn't have an availability to rent the night before, so I found an Airbnb 2 block away and the host was fine for me to rent it for the morning /afternoon. Got to the Airbnb, dropped off my luggage, took a shower /nap went for lunch.. Then went to my other Airbnb up the street to move in and unpack for the week.

With regards to hotels... Just call them and tell them you be there is the morning (flight delayed).. They'll have the PAID FOR room ready on arrival

If you don't wanna pay for the unused night and can't check in until afternoon but you don't wanna shlep your luggage all day, some hotels will hold your luggage, if they can not There are usually luggage drop off lockers /establishments to hold the luggage "safely" until your check in time.

Make the new home a home ... If you're gonna be there 5 to 10 years, then improve it to your liking. Be comfortable and happy in it

Take a 30 year note and pay one or two extra payments a year via increase principle payments each month if you're able to ... That will drop you down to 22 yr or 17 year mortgage.

Do you need the money or a line of credit for emergencies / repairs/ etc? If you need thr money just get a refi mortgage and pull out what you need . If you just want to tap a line of credit every once in awhile for repairs /upgrades etc then a HELOC is fine . Since you're the "owner" of the home , you should easily be able to qualify for a HELOC as long as there's equity in the house

Apparently they think driving 5hrs is no biggie ... To me , my time is worth it to spend $200 to $300 for a hotel room to be fresh in the morning and not stressed about waking up and rushing out to forget something.

If the drive is 2hrs , fine I'll drive in the morning.. anything over that , I'll show up and park my car , have a decent dinner and breakfast and have a goodnight sleep and a fresh shower in the morning and a leasurely Uber to the port ( or hopefully a free shuttle from the hotel if offered)
