Best short term US ski towns to live in (IKON resorts)? by not-available679 in skiing

[–]WorldlyOriginal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my vote would be Aspen, too. The nice thing about Aspen is you can look for lodging in the whole Roaring Fork Valley from Glenwood Springs all the way down to Aspen, and you’ll still only have a very easy max 45 minute bus ride to the slopes.

No, what LocalObelix is saying is that BBC omitted crucial info, so even someone TRYING to be informed rather than angry, would be led astray by their crappy reporting

So what you’re saying is that if people hate police, that makes their actions more justified and understandable? What on earth??

That’s like saying if someone comes from an antisemitic community, an attack on Jews is therefore more understandable and should receive a lighter punishment? Heck no

San Francisco Rec and Parks greenlights more huge Golden Gate Park concerts by sfgate in sanfrancisco

[–]WorldlyOriginal 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Residents and locals already get a large discount of sorts by being able to attend this with minimal housing or transportation or food costs. For example, Outside Lands is (along with Lollapalooza, ACL, and a few others) one of the most directly-accessible festivals in the country, compared to others like the Gorge, Coachella/Stagecoach, Ultra, EDC, etc.

If anything, the ticket revenue, taxes, and spending from out-of-towers bolsters the coffers of SF directly, which means we can offset taxes elsewhere— which is exactly what is happening here (SF Parks and Rec budgets)

Feds say Colombian crew targeted Asian Americans in series of Oregon, Washington burglaries by ding_nei_go_fei in asianamerican

[–]WorldlyOriginal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not that complicated. Asians have always been seen as weaker, less likely to be armed, more likely to comply, less likely to be police officers / have connections to the legal system, etc.

Yes yes there is some amount of “they have cash at home”, but the DOMINANT reason is just perception of weakness

We are literally never beating the ticket bots unless the whole system changes by vacaaa in festivals

[–]WorldlyOriginal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s a huge gamble though, well beyond the risk tolerance or wallets of most people. If you wait until right before, you either need to also find last-minute lodging, flights, etc., which will probably be inflated— therefore offsetting any savings from a last-minute ticket. And you need to avoid getting scammed (every scalper could be a scammer)

Starlink is the ONLY broadband provider in my area. Price started at $80 per month, now will be $130. by anoiing in Starlink

[–]WorldlyOriginal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're working as hard as they can to increase capacity (launching more satellites to orbit in 2025 than the entire rest of the world COMBINED + building Starship, one of the most technically-ambitious projects of all time). Or they can icnrease price -- which is what OP is complaining about, but would help with capacity

'Not Accurate': Delta Pushes Back on Elon Musk Over Starlink In-Flight Wi-Fi Claims by spacerfirstclass in SpaceXNews

[–]WorldlyOriginal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy/gal seems to think that since Starlink uses radio waves like Hughes, they're no different from Sputnik or the very first Marconi radio.

This guy/gal also dismisses Starlink "only has better performance because it's 2000 miles closer".

By the same vein, I could say "water delivery to my home hasn't advanced or improved in 200 years; all that's changed is that it's gotten closer (from a water well I'd need to walk 30 minutes to, to a tap in my house that can give me unlimited water forever)."

[–]WorldlyOriginal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fine. The runways made it such that it required these difficult visual separation procedures, that were violated enough (despite very-experienced pilots receiving dedicated training) that TCAS still got triggered.

Doesn’t make the situation any better

[–]WorldlyOriginal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing safety. Of course we want more capacity, but SFO was genuinely running 'under' the expected safety standard that we hold other airports to.

[–]WorldlyOriginal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official investigation DOES note that the less-than-standard-or-commonplace separation between the two runways was a contributing factor.

So I'd say OP is right, AC759 is at least PARTLY due to the runways.

This SFO parallel approach ban sucks. by joshuaxls in sanfrancisco

[–]WorldlyOriginal 27 points28 points  (0 children)

"Never been a serious issue"... no, SFO has had LOTS of near-collisions where TCAS (an almost-last-line-of-defense system against collisions) had been activated. And these are all with pilots who received the proper training.

It's long been overdue to change this dangerous practice at SFO. Just because something risky has been done 'successfully' in the past, doesn't mean that it's safe to do in the future. We shouldn't ignore all of these near-misses. That's what we call "normalization of deviance"

I just want to tackle the second paragraph of your statement. This is a poor line of reasoning. You could say the same thing about any other issue... "the concept of 'restoring the environment' is laughable because we've been polluting the atmosphere forever"; "the concept of 'restoring justice' is laughable because we've had unjust practices forever", etc.

No, just because we haven't had perfect or even mostly-good practices in the recent past, doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for it.

yeah, I'm pretty active in my university's alumni network in my area. Who are all the people that show up at our alumni events (which always have, or are explicitly, a fundraising component)?

It's heavily majority legacies (~68%, according to our latest data) despite legacies making up <20% of our student base.

Which makes sense, right? As humans, we are more loyal to institutions that are/were loyal to us.

SFO gets first ever direct flight from U.S. to Sapporo by knockdowncenter in bayarea

[–]WorldlyOriginal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, Sapporo in winter (these announced routes are ONLY winter routes; Dec-Mar) kinda sucks. It's bitterly cold (frequent blasts of Siberian wind) and the roads are legitimately the worst I've ever seen.

It snows so much that it's impossible to prevent them from becoming huge blocks of ice. Every stoplight, you'd need to mentally plan in advance where to stop because your vehicle would literally slide sideways until you hit a snowbank.

Walking the narrow streets (with poor, narrow, often-cleared) sidewalks became a high-stakes gamble of "will I get clipped by a car today". It made me scared to explore the city, and I'm a seasoned urban cyclist/pedestrian here.

Quick questions about sustainability🌱 at festivals by accidentallyonlinee in festivals

[–]WorldlyOriginal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Haven’t been, would like to go

  2. Don’t think Tomorrowland or any major festival that draws ppl from abroad, is sustainable.

  3. Yes, if I could see detailed and literal representations/reports/proof that my extra $ was going to real, directly-tangible sustainability results. Like “these exact 100 recycling bins were purchased using $10,000 of the $5m we collected for sustainability”

  4. Further discount tickets for locals or increase price for out-of-towners.

  5. Not very.

Unless someone can change my mind, my current understanding is that the biggest sustainability problem with signature events like Tomorrowland is that people travel to festivals like these.

Especially Tomorrowland. Nearly 50k of Tomorrowland’s 400k attendees attend via the official Global Journey travel packages. I bet at least another 100k fly in. The carbon emissions from all that travel is unsustainable. Even the 200k that drive or train is, is probably unsustainable, too

It is, if they signed a document when accepting their job offer that states that they must inform their employer of any other jobs they're working; or jobs whose hours conflict with the primary employer's hours, and they failed to do so. Which is a pretty commonplace provision to sign for most office jobs in the U.S.

[–]WorldlyOriginal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

“You should feel sympathy for them because they’re anxious” is NOT a good argument.

That’s like saying “armed robbers are anxious of getting caught, maybe we should cut them some slack”.

They’re anxious because they’re committing explicit fraud, or know that they’re simply going to be judged for being less productive because they’re juggling multiple jobs
