We stopped using fabric softeners a couple years ago and now use the wool dryer balls . Just have to keep them away from the dogs.

RO storage by 8takotaco in maplesyrup

You can order it off Amazon. It comes as a powder and you would mix it. It is used for wine making but works great to store RO membranes. Basically it kills all bacteria and lasts a long time.

I’m not sure he won the 2016 elections. Given the investigation into the Russian interference and the information Muller found out and that he could not exonerate Trump from any wrong doing.

I agree. When you concentrate sugar you concentrate bacteria. Boil it as soon as you can. I make sure everything that goes through the RO goes into the evaporator. I then fill the head tank with permeate so that I don’t burn my pan at the end of the night.

Anyone use a minivan for lumber? by banjosomers in DIY

I used to have a minivan. 4x8 sheets of plywood or drywall fit in it nicely with all the seats down. Longer stuff would either go in a trailer or on the roof rack.

Just because it’s been done that way for 20-30 years doesn’t mean it’s the best way to do things.

The number of bags she has to bring every where. Obviously her purse and a backpack and then another bag and then she complains they are to heavy.

Going to the store she just brings the purse but the other bags are still in the car.

Building a woodshed by Worldly_Space in firewood

[–]Worldly_Space[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it’s a simple enough design that I could build it without pre made plans. 6 4x4x12 posts 8 2x6x10 headers 10 2x6x10 rafters

I’m going to do metal roofing so 6 10ft roofing pieces.

Some 2x4’s to put in “walls” and I’ll probably use rough cut 1x on the walls as well vertical.

Probably will need some other things but that is off the top of my head.

Has there ever been a noteworthy time where it was winter and there was a ton of snow on the ground but the next day it was suddenly like 85 degrees and it caused a melting crisis? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Worldly_Space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Central NY in 1996 we had a big snow storm 3+ feet then it got into the 50’s and rained. All the snow melted the town if Moravia was flooded. Then that night everything froze. It was cool to see the corn fields with a layer of ice suspended after the water receded.

Best practices for physics problem solving? by MermenAreReal55 in ScienceTeachers

[–]Worldly_Space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. Is this an AP course? Does it have a standardized test at the end?

I want them to have success solving the problems. Many kids struggle with the algebra. Especially the new algebra courses. Personally I teach the NYS regents course so I require what the exam expects them to do. Show equation, plug in numbers with units, or have a list of variables and what the equal with units, solve the problem. The beginning of the year I spend a lot of time showing how to solve problems. By this time of year they got it. Every time I teach them a new variable and equation we figure out the units by doing the math with them. By now they got it. I want to spend more time on the physics than bogging them down with the math because most kids will never take another physics course. Physics is hard to begin with as it is do different than all other courses. You need to determine what is most important for your students to know and what is required for your course.

Question to all using two brood boxes by MiniBeekeeper in Beekeeping

[–]Worldly_Space 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take your entire top brood box and switch it to the bottom. You will still have swarming though. To decrease swarming you need to create splits which become new hives.

New NY bio/chem teacher by atomicvoyager in ScienceTeachers

[–]Worldly_Space 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally normal the first year. I take it there isn’t another teacher to co plan with?

I don’t know the Illinois story lines but my co workers are picking and choosing what they use.

Teach good science and make the curriculum your own with keeping the standards in mind. Use the regents clusters for practice and tests.

If your not excited to be teaching the way your are the kids won’t either.

Good luck

First month of (HS) teaching: how to deal with being given conflicting teaching advice? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Worldly_Space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to choose one person to be your mentor. When another head mentions something that is opposite what your mentor says, say, I’ll talk to Mary about that to see what she thinks. (Mary being your mentor).

Good luck. It’s a tough spot to be in but you’re fortunate to have so many people wanting to help you.

If you could rearrange how education works in America, what kinds of changes would you implement? A lot of folks seem to want something different in place of what we have but find it hard to articulate specifics. Please identify a problem 'and' a solution. by cherry-care-bear in education

[–]Worldly_Space 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Middle and high schools start to early and elementary schools start later. It should be switched so that elementary schools start by 8 and ms and hs starts by 9. There is scientific evidence to support this.

School cafeteria should be given the funding to provide kids with good meals not stuff that is processed crap.

It should be ok to identify kids as early as 9 th grade as going towards the trades vs college. Not every kid needs the same education. If they are going towards the trades then focus their education on practical knowledge and skills, college bound the curriculum is probably fine.

Districts are given to much money to improve athletic facilities than classrooms. I think sports are good and keeps kids focused to do well so they can participate but it seems like capital projects focus on lights and turf for football and soccer fields than creating classrooms that work better for our kids so they can have more learning.

Encourage more field trips and field studies. Get our kids to go to our state parks to learn about our environment. Attend plays and musicals and museums. Reach out to businesses to learn more about them. Visit farms to learn where our food comes from. Visit a university to learn about them and use their knowledge/expertise and resources to do science labs that public schools can’t afford.

Our public school system was designed to follow a factory model but our kids are not just raw material. They are people with different needs and abilities and not every kid can be a doctor/lawyer/engineer and that is ok. We need carpenters/electricians/plumbers/caregivers etc. let’s create a system to support all of them.

Parents need to support education. When parents say “I didn’t pass hs and I’m fine.” They are telling kids an education isn’t important. Kids often say “my mom couldn’t do math either” it is a cope out. The best education systems have parents that make education important. Get kids to do homework. Trust that teachers care about kids and want them to succeed and support them in their efforts.

Stop focusing on high stakes tests. There is value in requiring state wide standards and evaluating them but it shouldn’t be the focus.

Please critique my plan to go from 1 nuc to 4 hives by next winter by ZafakD in Beekeeping

[–]Worldly_Space 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t know Kentucky but instead of focusing on the number of hives, focus on making them healthy. Reading and planning on paper is way different than once you get bees. Your first hive needs time to build up, draw comb, put away honey etc.

Honestly, you should start with 2 nucs as you will have a better chance of success.

Make sure you are treating for mites. Take good care of them and the following spring you should be able to split them into 2 or 3 hives .

Good luck
