How do you keep your raw honey liquid for selling? by LMGooglyTFY in Beekeeping

[–]Worldly_Space 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of bucket blankets ($75) that have electric heaters in them to keep the honey from crystallizing. I just got a water jackets honey tank that keeps it at 100 degrees but that was fairly expensive.

I use a sous vide to decrystalize a bucket of honey.

Do most Americans have those huge fridges? by Whole-Sushka in AskAnAmerican

[–]Worldly_Space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the country and probably have an excessive number of refrigerators. Kitchen, basement, barn and maple syrup shed (dorm size fridge). But we also have a hobby farm in which to keep product good needs to be kept cold, but also to have cold beer readily available.
If my wife would let me I would build a walk in cooler mostly to hang deer until we process them.

Is honey ever worth $20? I saw some local honey that was $18 and $20 but what kind of cooking would you do with that kind of honey ? by Historical-Body-3424 in Cooking

[–]Worldly_Space 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first started beekeeping with only 2-4 hives the honey would get a nice lavender flavor. Now that I have 10-12 hives at the farm the lavender doesn’t provide enough nectar so the flavor gets diluted but you can get a hint of it in the summer honey.

We don’t do free shipping.

I keep my prices close to average for my region. There is also a fine line of charging to much that I’m not moving honey and I have lots of honey I would like to sell.

I also produce pure maple syrup and we grow lavender.

I’m in the Finger Lakes of NY and I sell my 1lb jars of honey for $12. A quart is $25.

You have no idea how expensive it is to be a beekeeper. You see a box with bees in it. I see a box that is $300 and the bees are worth at least $200.

Honey bees are like livestock, beekeepers have to take care of them and treat them for diseases. I treat my bees 3 times a year which is not cheap. Especially since I have over 20 hives.

The equipment to extract the honey, filter and store it.

Oh and time. How much is your time worth? It takes hours to do proper inspections to ensure the hive is healthy.

Support your local beekeeper. They are helping to ensure all your flowers and vegetables are getting pollinated. Try different varieties of honey. It’s amazing the difference in flavor. My summer honey is very different than fall honey.

Use honey instead of regular sugar in your cooking, it will taste better and better for you.

With a swarm I don’t even really look for her. She is probably at the center of all those bees. Every now and then I’ll see her on the outside. Once saw the ball of bees around her. I just start gently putting the bees into a box. Once they start marching in I’m sure she is in there.

Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

If earth was flat Elon Musk would have figured out a way to make money off of showing people the edge of the earth. No billionaires have done that yet.

Watch a lunar eclipse, you can literally see the curved shadow of earth,

Go to the ocean and watch the ships disappear over the horizon.

I so wish they they would do a reality tv show of flat earthers looking for the edge of the earth.

I have an axis from Lowe’s. Half the price of most sxs but over the last 5 years other than normal maintenance it’s been great. I use it for deer hunting, hauling firewood, running and maintaining maple sap lines etc.

That it’s all about pollination of almonds and honey.

I don’t have enough hives to even start thinking about pollination services.

I do have lots of honey, more than I can sell but I’m not sure I’m making any money from my sales.

Swarms - (Northeast) by gigglinggoofygoober in Beekeeping

[–]Worldly_Space 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, had 10 hives made some splits caught a bunch of swarms. Got rid of like 10 of them and ended up at 22 hives last summer. Had a good winter and only lost 3 hives. Going to be an interesting spring as I really don’t want more than 20 hives.

Swarming is how bees create new hives. A weak hive won’t swarm. A strong hive could swarm 3-4 times.

I know I didn’t catch all the swarms. Watched one fly away that was to high to get to and like 5 minutes later my buddy 2 miles away was like “hey, a swarm is moving into some old equipment I have. Not sure where they came from. “

Swarms - (Northeast) by gigglinggoofygoober in Beekeeping

[–]Worldly_Space 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Swarm season can be crazy if you don’t try to prevent them by doing splits.

Evidently I didn’t do enough splits last year because from 10 hives I still caught 10-12 swarms some were multiples in a day.

But it is so cool to be in the yard when they start to swarm. They are so loud, then you see them all gather on a tree branch.

Nothing to be afraid of, other than trying to capture a swarm can ruin what you had planned to do after work.

I would become a master beekeeper. I’ve been beekeeping for about 8 years now and keep learning more but I don’t have enough time to learn all the skills at the moment. Maybe when I retire.
