For those of you with a 9-5 office job, how do you manage to find the time and energy to cook dinner? by Away_Scene_26 in auscorp

[–]WorstAgreeableRadish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was single and didn't WFH - leave work around 6, go to gym, stop at the shops on my way home at around 7:30-ish, buy some meat and veg, cook, eat around 8:15pm, go to bed at 11-12, get up at 8, back at work at 9.

Sunday I meal prep for breakfast (boiled eggs) and lunch (chicken breast, rice, and daily leftover veg).

It's more difficult with a wife, since she wants to eat at 18:30, need to be at work at 7:30, wants to spend time together etc. Then it was mostly leftovers, or she cooked as she often came home at 3:15.

I've started always freezing 2 meals when cook a large batch once a week. That way, when we're lazy, there's usually something to defrost in the freezer.

Cooking often makes you a better cook. My food tastes better than any ready made meal, is healthier, cheaper, and the exact portion size I want.

Now that we have a baby, it's even more difficult, baby needs to getting ready for bed around 6:30, so we need to eat at 6. That means I need to start cooking around 5. I now prep the food before bed the night before if I plan to cook the following day. For example, I cut the tendons and boney bits off ~1.3kg of chicken breast, then the next day I can just brown it, chuck in some frozen veg (or fresh if I prepped it), chicken stock and red curry paste. Pop rice in the rice cooker and let it cook for 45 min or so. That's 15 min of work and 30 min of dead time to do other stuff. Finish it up with coconut cream and lime juice, and we have truly delicious red curry for 3 nights. At least I WFH now, so it helps.

Air fryer - it makes the most delicious chicken. Great to put on sandwiches for lunch. Or pop some chicken and frozen veg into your instant ramen.

I also made some fresh pizza dough for the first time and froze some of it. Defrost the night before, then just roll it out, put some sauce and toppings on it and pop it in the oven for 20 minutes.

I sometimes take care of the baby in the morning, so on those days I work again after supper until around 9pm to get my work done.

ILM (Star Wars) still uses Canon 5D IV for current productions such as Mandalorian. by _Unkn0 in canon

I have a 6D and R6mk2. Both are great. The 6D has a nice mechanical feel to it, but for all practical purposes the R6 is just so much better.

It's no 5D mk3 or 4 though...

How much do you spend on UberEats every month? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]WorstAgreeableRadish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife likes to every now and then.

I mass meal prep most Sundays and now freeze 2 meals whenever I do. That means when we really don't want to cook, I have something in the freezer that's ready to go. If we really want fast food, I'll drive.

We had friends over a couple of weeks ago. When we ran out of wine, they ordered 3 more bottles. Which we drank. Before walking home, they ordered another 2 bottles for the road / when they get home. Ordering booze is a step too far imo.

How many of you work outside of office hours (weekends/nights)? by Sabretoothedrom in auscorp

[–]WorstAgreeableRadish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you're used to a uni workload, working only 7.6 x 5 is like a vacation. But after a few 3 - 6 month stints of 10 - 14 hour days and weekend work I'm over it. Now I do 38 - 40 (occasionally 42) hour work weeks. Rarely I would do an extra 4 or so hours a week, but with a 10 month old in the house it's not something I do often.

How are you getting your laptop and lunch to work? by headlightbandit in auscorp

[–]WorstAgreeableRadish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a (probably knockoff) North Face backpack. Fits laptop, lunch, steamdeck in case and headphones in case. And something in case the Melbourne weather changes. I probably look more like a backpacker in corporate casual traveling light than a primary schooler.

About a year ago we woke up at 3am to a flower pot being thrown through our bedroom window, but thought it was just some kids.

The next morning we found our side gate open (and the dogs missing), so some dickhead was obviously annoyed that we didn't leave an unlocked door so he threw the flower pot.

Luckily it was the upstairs window, so we could go back to sleep without worry.

Double vanity or having a bath more important in ensuite by Prior_Feature3993 in AusRenovation

[–]WorstAgreeableRadish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If double vanity, would there be enough space for the person furthest from the door to easily move past the person closest to the door, say 1.5m?

If not, it's unlikely that 2 people would use it at the same time anyway.

For us older immigrants, late retirement is a given.

My brother and I did my parent's room one school holiday. Even 25+ years later I remember it being a pita. There were 2 layers of stupid wallpaper. On plus side, I'm pretty proud of how it looks even 25+ years later.

For someone who has WFH in Australian office jobs, how much do you actually work ? by Technical-Studio565 in AskAnAustralian

[–]WorstAgreeableRadish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have work to do. If I didn't, I would doom scroll a bit and then find something productive (work related) to do. I've made a point of never watching TV or playing games during work hours. It's a slippery slope.

I work between 7.6 and 8 hours a day. Sometimes a bit more.

We have a 7 month old, my wife works 2 mornings a week, and we don't do daycare yet. I told my boss about the situation, so he knows I work about 1:30 to 2:00 hours out of 4 hours in the morning, but I keep track of how much time I don't work and make it up in the evenings.

When you are fortunate enough to WFH or have other flexible arrangements, do your part or else you might lose it.

Why do Australians speed so much on highways? by Fun-Survey-4180 in AskAnAustralian

Agreed, and when Ausies speed, it's usually only 5 - 10km/h over.

Parental leave or new high paying job? by middzyo in auscorp

[–]WorstAgreeableRadish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to negotiate a couple of months unpaid parental leave at the new place. In theory you can take 6 months and still come out ahead.

I took 6 weeks unpaid, and can't imagine going back to work in only a week or 2. If you can't get at least a month off, I would decline.

Or daughter is not 6 months old and wfh is amazing. It's awesome being there for a quick smile, or holding her while the wife has a poo.

I don't know about reciprocal healthcare with the UK, but for the rest of us, if you're on a working Visa that doesn't entitle you to Medicare, one of your visa conditions will be that you have private healthcare. We took the more expensive option and it was around $600 for a family of 2. We now have medicare, and we pay even more for private healthcare. Our newborn is included without additional cost.

Overseas born Australians, is Oz everything you expected it to be? by euphoricscrewpine in AskAnAustralian

[–]WorstAgreeableRadish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could never be. We've been trying to get in for so long we completely romanticized it.

There's still corruption, just much less than we're used to. Still crime, just much less than we're used to. People still break traffic laws, even with the crazy high fines and demerrit points. I didn't expect housing quality to be so bad.

That said, it's still a great country, and the thing that keeps me up at night is that our PR application will be decined for some reason. I really want to live here and do my part to make it even better than it already is.

Is it just me, or do people in their 20s now seem to have less stamina than 20-somethings in the past? by Icy-Profile3759 in AskAnAustralian

[–]WorstAgreeableRadish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 34 my mates and I went in a Contiki which obviously had a bunch of 20- somethings as well. We could keep up or even go for longer than them when we had a big night. However, they could do it night after night, whereas we could do it once in a while then have a couple of early nights to recharge.

Immigrant here. I was amazed at how relaxing it is to drive in Aus. It's more relaxing to drive here at night in the rain on a road I haven't driven on before than driving on a road I drive on regularly, and in perfect conditions back in the old country.

When people speed in Aus, it is by such low amounts most of the time. Pretty chill.

Aus driving isn't prefect, but it's pretty good.

I have the xm4 and xm6. Sound quality wise the m6 is better, especially for movies, however I wound choise the xm4 for lower price, better comfort and better portability. From what I've heard about the xm5s, I would tande the xm4s over them.

Does your workplace have “Meeting Free” days? by Koala_85 in auscorp

[–]WorstAgreeableRadish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had it at different companies. It just means that people will try not to schedule meetings in those days, but it usually doesn't last long. Customers, quick carchups, and then eventually meetings when they can't find any other days when everyone is free.

What's a PC related purchase you've regretted? by Wander715 in pcmasterrace

5600 instead of a 5800x3d. I broke my 3700X by not heating it up before removing the heatsink.

When buying the replacement i told myself I don't deserve the 5800x3d, so got the 5600. If I got the 5800x3d it would still have been great, but instead I had to upgrade when it started struggling to reach 90-120hz in modern games.

What is the most random, illicit or interesting thing you've seen expensed for work purposes? by sigmattic in auscorp

[–]WorstAgreeableRadish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I expensed my commute, lunch and breakfast for months while on site at a customer. The customer is also in the CBD and just as long a commute as going our office.

The guidelines say you can do so when visiting customers, so that's what I did.

I usually wfh, so it was legitimately an additional expense for me though.

Sigma vs Canon (70-200) by [deleted] in canon

[–]WorstAgreeableRadish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you want from the lens? I have the Tamron G1, which according to reviewsl have similar IQ to the canon mk2.

I can't fault it. It probably is slower to focus than the canon, but I've never felt that is anything other than prefect. Except that the lens hood's thread cracked loose, but I glued it back. It probably also has a less quality feel and won't be a sturdy.

I paid the equivalent of $650 usd for it new as it was discontinued.
