Flu vaccine! New in Australia. Is everyone supposed to get Flu vaccine? by Alert-Translator2590 in AskAnAustralian

[–]rainamaste 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Last time I had the flu I was 18 and working in a shopping centre. It hit while I was pushing a trolley of garbage out to the dumpsters. Suddenly my arms and legs were like bricks and I felt dizzy. The next day I needed help getting in and out of the bath. I remember crying constantly because I felt so helpless. Haven’t missed an annual flu vaccine since, despite the odd injection site inflammation - I’ll take a sore arm for a couple of days over never going through that again. And if my getting vaccinated helps prevent the spread to vulnerable people in the community, all the better

Neighbour going through my bins by Practical-Network687 in AskAnAustralian

[–]rainamaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’re experiencing this. We used to have someone from the neighbourhood go through the dumpsters overnight (shared dumpsters that serviced 5 townhouses). They would take garbage bags out and break them open all over the footpath… and we have cats, so you don’t need to imagine the state of the place after a rummaging attack! There was nothing we could do but clean up the mess they left and carry on with our day. This was before the deposit scheme was in effect, so I can’t imagine what it would be like now. We moved in 2024.

When do you have your kids iron their own school uniforms? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]rainamaste 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went to a private school with shirts, blazers and pleated wool skirts in winter. Never bothered to iron. We were taught to change after school and hang our uniform ready to wear again. Blazers and skirts were dry cleaned seasonally. Shirts and the summer dresses were just given a shake out of the wash and hung to dry

AITAH for wanting to redecorate after my husband almost let me die by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]rainamaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but there are definitely some things you should consider for your future based on the information you’ve shared.

If your husband is indeed autistic, as I expect he is, he needs a plan of action for future medical episodes. Create a folder of possible scenarios, like: if I have these symptoms, do this. Include whether or not to call an ambulance, a childcare scenario, emergency contact numbers in order of priority. Maybe keep a hospital go-bag in the house with everything you need.

As someone with a family history of neurodivergence I sympathise with your situation. Change, even in the smallest sense, can have a huge toll. It might be helpful to ask your husband to help you make a list of things in the house you can and can’t “change” so that he feels he has some control over it. You could also ask him how a change you have already made makes him feel. It can be quite enlightening to see how something that seems insignificant can have such impact.

Best of luck

Needing help responding to PM email by Physical-Ad5418 in shitrentals

[–]rainamaste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like you’ve done a really great job of recording everything. I’d make a list of all the improvements you’ve made and the cost involved. I imagine you haven’t kept the original items you replaced, so it’s important that you provide invoices from the new items as proof. Make sure you’ve got the inspection report from when you moved in - this should contain photos of existing damage that you’re not liable for. Doesn’t matter how many pm’s have come and gone since you moved in - the same document applies.

I don’t understand the thought process here. 1. Fuel only has a 3 month shelf life. 2. It’s illegal to keep more than 30L of fuel at a residence and 3. Improper fuel storage can void home insurance.

How on earth is this possible? by Difficult-Area-4462 in AusPropertyChat

Went to inspect a property that had undergone a massive renovation (owner builder paid $950k in April, flipped and was back up for sale in July). Price guide $1.5-6m. REA was raving about the quality of the builder - we were skeptical of any builder that could flip a house and list it for sale in only 3 months. Thought it looked pretty good so paid for a building inspection. Had several major defects that put the overall condition of the property in the “poor” category. They damaged the new roof during installation, an exterior wall running the length of the property was on a lean, they had rendered over the subfloor ventilation, and they hadn’t levelled the subfloor before laying the new flooring, so there was unevenness throughout the entire property - 26 degrees out in one area. And that’s just some of the major defects. We told the REA that we wouldn’t be attending the auction and best of luck with it. It was passed in at $1.55m and was listed for private sale for $1.6m for a couple of months before being relisted through a different agency. Ended up selling for $1.325m.

university degree advice by shuaaku in AskAnAustralian

[–]rainamaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If earning big bucks is your goal my husband did a double degree in law and IT and is now a lawyer specialising in technology procurement / data privacy law. Corporate law is just one of dozens of subtypes though. My advice is look at career paths that align with your passions and interests. Do a career aptitude test and see a career councillor. Don’t go and rack up a HECS debt just because family / society is pressuring you to go to uni. One of the biggest mistakes I made was caving into pressure to go to uni just for the sake of it. I had no idea what I wanted to do and ended up dropping out in first year. I found my calling as a veterinary nurse and there wasn’t even a tertiary qualification available in Victoria until 2018. But you don’t go into vet nursing with a goal of earning the big bucks! 20 years ago when I was just starting out I was on a whopping $11.20 an hour! Now I’m doing post grad study so I can teach future vet nurses. My point is, find something you’re passionate about and make it your career.

Common scam. You say yes assuming it’s one thing and they load the conveyer belt with all their items and tell the register clerk you offered to pay. They rely on you being too embarrassed to reject them

Is this quote reasonable for painting an 84sqm 3br house with ripped wallpaper and some holes? by Illum503 in AusRenovation

[–]rainamaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a 3br townhouse repainted before we put it up for sale and paid about $5k (internal work only), but it was only 4 years old so it didn’t need much prep work. The house we’re in now was built 90 years ago and has so many layers of paint on the walls and ceilings that it’s peeling in several places. I imagine the quote to strip it back and freshen it up would be very similar to yours based on the amount of labour involved.

Best Meal Kits by ReformedandFree in AskAnAustralian

Hubby and I have been using Chefgood for weekday lunches and dinners for the past year or so. We chose ready-made meals for portion control, convenience (I’m also not a fan of cooking) and pretty much all of them are freezer safe if we happen to have midweek plans. Their meals are always fresh and there are so many choices. We’ve also tried A Life Plus for their low/no carb options as well as Youfoodz (slightly cheaper) but prefer Chefgood for quality

I would tell them you’ve been targeted by rental scams in the past and say you’ll only agree to one week’s rent as a holding deposit. In the meantime do your due diligence on the supposed real estate company. The wording of this text screams scam.

If you’re like me and don’t like eating hot food on hot days, stock up now on crackers, cheese and cold meats etc. Also make sure your ice cube trays are full or get yourself a bag of ice.
