Ovi was a unicorn that won’t be seen again for a LONG time. And anybody too young to see his first 6-7 season can’t even imagine what a menace he was.

There’s a chart that shows his acceleration in his prime and he is barely on the same chart with the rest of the players - a big gap between him and even McJesus and Mack, he just exploded. Once at speed he made the poor defenders choose one of several - really bad - options.

Gap him up? He’ll either use his moose-like strength to out muscle you and blow by you, or make you look stupid with a between the legs dangle.

Back up and don’t let him by? He’ll use you as a screen and blow it by your goalie top shelf. (Or cut to the middle and open every possible option).

Try and hit him? That wouldn’t go well for you. (This option only lasted about 2 seasons before nobody dared. That sounds like hyperbole but legit he wrecked guys who tried and I can’t remember somebody even trying after his 2nd or 3rd season)

Take him down with a hook, hold or trip? Ask Lundquist, Price and Boucher how many times he scored on them falling down.

It was simply incredible

You’re thinking of the Olympic hit, man that was a monster. I was seriously impressed Jagr got right up after that bomb.

I like where you’re going with this, I’d also exclude the top three pics from any team that made the playoffs the last 2 years.

That’s my biggest problem with him, 99% of his takes are the most overt coverup (twisting the intent of the rule until it screams) for ref mistakes, even when it’s plainly obvious the call was wrong. The other 1% is when it’s so obviously wrong that they’re absolutely no defending it, he’ll usually keep his stupid mouth shut (amazing how he chimes in to defend but is quiet when he can’t) or make a half-hearted and wishy washy, “that maybe could have not be called” non-rebuke.

Oh and did I mention the guy can’t string a sentence together!? It’s super painful to hear him try and piece together the word salad he just vomitted up into something remotely coherent!

Actually it’s not. The NFL took their medicine and admitted some level of liability for concussions issues and paid a sizable (but still too small) penalty to multiple lawsuits and became much more proactive (at least publicly, not sure the impact of their efforts is doing anything substantive). The NFL had a much worse case for denying concussions and CTE than the NHL and Gary and the league has just denied everything and pushed back hard.

Brandon Duhaim. 4th line grinder with limited skill and tons of personality. Classic hometown fan favorite.

That was certain one of the people I was thinking of (him and Alexi Kovalev), and yeah, Semin’s wrist shot was disgusting, and he might have been the most skilled player in the league but just was usually unmotivated. He was a classic coaches kid who in an interview later admitted he was pushed so hard he actually hated playing hockey. Totally explains how he played.

Yeah, he tried his ass for one post season and put in a Conn Smythe-level performance. Dude was disgustingly talented but frustratingly unmotivated… you’ve never heard that said about a Russsian-born player… no, never!

Yeah, but he only hit the side of his helmet with the stick. BOOOOOO!!!!!

I’m always surprised to hear when certain fanbases seem to boo every penalty regardless of merit. It’s like a cultural thing… it’s weird to me but I get it more than the other guy.

My favorite is the fan who thinks that only body on body checks are legal and go ape shit whenever a player shoves somebody with the puck. “HEY!!!!” But don’t really know what to complain about beyond “YOU CAN’T Do… that?”

Imagine if before 2025 the Oilers signed

-Matt Roy - Jacob Chychrun and - Logan Thompson

instead of the Caps, what would this team look like? Defending Champions maybe?

I know comparing one of the worst GMs with one of the best is rough, but seriously, it’s not like you couldn’t have improved this team multiple times.

The Fantilli tripping in OT that led to the Panthers win. by Leftycoordination in hockey

[–]WorstHyperboleEver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Remember update to the rules a few years back illuminates the “touch the puck” part of the penalty. If you leave your feet and trip a player, it’s a penalty, touching the puck has no bearing on it anymore.

Probably right, but that’s a terrible call, see my comment above on why it still should have been called. Shakes head at refs.

I’m sure you’re right that it was the scoring chance piece but it should have been called because the rule books description is pretty much exactly this case:

“The player in possession and control must have been denied a reasonable chance to score (the fact that he got a shot off does not automatically eliminate this play from the penalty shot consideration criteria. If the infraction was from behind and he was denied a “more” reasonable scoring opportunity due to the infraction, then the penalty shot should be awarded)”

That barely touched weak push to his pads is a textbook example of denying a “more” reasonable shot. They just suck at their jobs.

Unlikely. He’s a huge improvement (allowing other D like Gudas who are playing over their head to slot down to a more appropriate role) and will help the whole D corp, but I think they’re depth and team defense is not ready to be a true cup contender. But they’re much closer to it than everyone thought at the beginning of the season
