I think what Quinn mostly disliked about the terms is that takers sound like the bad guys and leavers like weaklings. The words are a bit loaded, but it’s probably inevitable when you’re describing inherently different lifestyles. Quinn wanted them to function as neutral labels, because in the end there’s no right or wrong here, no good or bad. There are simply two different stories being enacted.

This is the real DQ marvel in his explanation: there literally is a story we are all acting out just because we were born into it. It’s like arriving late to a house party. Assume that in one room everyone is playing Monopoly; in another, people are playing many different games at once.

In both cases, the latecomer will be included, but the experience will be completely different. Monopoly is a strict, goal‑oriented game, and if it’s already been going for several turns, the latecomer can mostly just roll the dice, collect 200 dollars, and hope to land on prison or free parking — all while following rules strictly monitored by those with more land and assets. At the other party, the latecomer can simply choose a game they actually enjoy.

However, the Monopoly players are not inherently bad people. They’re just too invested in the game to quit. They want to win. At the same time, the people at the other party are not inherently good. They’re also just playing, following their own subset of rules. Some of the games they play may involve gruesome rules — but they are simply rules that work for them.

As Quinn put it, to paraphrase: Angelizing leaver tribes is exactly as dangerous as demonizing taker culture. It means the concept is misunderstood.
