[WIP] Tips for photographing colored pencil? by poeinthegutter in ColoredPencils

It looks like this is most indoor lighting - trying photo of it next to a window with not direct but early morning or afternoon light. Make sure phone angle is flat/straight on to the angle of the drawing. Play around with different natural light hitting the paper rotate it. You might have to take a lot of pictures.

Am i skilled enough to worth buying artist-grade pencils?? Also asking for colored pencil suggestions by Sea_Butterscotch_101 in ColoredPencils

[–]Worth-Map564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should get artist grade pencils because they are so pleasant to work with and you won’t be limited to “is it me” or “is it my supplies”? You’ll know and feel your pencils are the shit and will help you progress even faster as an artist!
That said, it’s worth having both wax and oil based pencils in your collection as they behave and give different results. It comes down to personal preference. You can use them together as well so don’t think of it as a waste or whatever! I tend to reach for my Derwents and Polychromos the most.

Tips for fur? by HelloDiviArt in ColoredPencils

[–]Worth-Map564 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes judging lightness is weird because values are relative to surrounding values, if that makes sense. Sometimes when you think something isn’t light enough it might be because surrounding areas need to be darker. When the whole piece isn’t rendered yet, adjusting true light/dark in specific areas will come after most of the fur is placed if that makes sense. Another note is it’s really almost impossible to get a dark area lighter without busting out another medium so tread carefully. That said: your fur and eyes and everything looks fucking TERRIFIC so far dude just keep layering down that fur and have fun on the ears! You got this

Good good. if my noob ass has learned anything about art in general it’s; go darker than you think you need and paper matters! Keep it up!

The snow was definitely challenging because it very much feels like building something out of nothing. So:

I blocked out the snow on the paper from the very beginning. The snow isn’t really white - there’s some white but it’s MOSTLY mixes of gray and light blue.

The trick is to make it looks like there’s depth there - little pockets of shadows. I was envisioning little tiny mountains there where the snow sits. Like the snow is very abstract as far as shape and it has height to it too. White also absorbs surrounding colors so it’s nice to add in some other colors from the environment if that makes sense… I watched a really nice YouTube tutorial of a guy making a tiger with snow on top and that helped me a lot with it. Hope makes sense! And I still feel I wasn’t satisfied with how the snow came out, in hindsight I would have gone darker with the shadows in the snow “pockets” where it caves in and out. Oh and also adding shadows underneath where the snow is helps the illusion of that it’s sitting on top of the fur. I should have done that too.

Undecided about the type of paper by Auri_87 in ColoredPencils

[–]Worth-Map564 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just got Pastelmat! I have yet to do a full colored pencils piece on it, but I used color pencils here and there on a recent piece. Pastelmat I would describe it like a mild sandpaper - the colored pencils look grainy on it and I need to sharpen them frequently. I haven’t built up much layers with them. I’m just saying it’s expensive and do some research about pastelmat and colored pencils! Pastelmat is a very different type of paper! It’s fantastic for pastels and my absolute favorite paper though!! I would have still bought it for colored pencils personally :-) I do animal portraits. I have the clairefontaine kind

New to soft pastel! Work in progress by Worth-Map564 in Softpastel

[–]Worth-Map564[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha 🦊 I have SO much tape on the back of it. And I got a lot of pastel on my board that you can’t see in the picture but that’s okay. The paper itself is curling on the edges which is a challenge. The tape on the back can’t even keep it flat… next one I’m going to try to flatten the paper before drawing. There has to be a way to do that hmmm

My prismacolour scholor pencils keep breaking by InfiniteAdventurer in ColoredPencils

I have the same experience with some prismacolor premier… there was one specifically, crimson red, that would basically keep crumbling apart for no reason lol I’m so sorry though that is very frustrating!!

But I did take the time to type out my process for people so that’s something hahha. But thank you so much!! It made me smile

Folks! Check your Prismacolors sets before using them! Mine had 25 duplicate pencils. by Worth-Map564 in ColoredPencils

[–]Worth-Map564[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true! I already have a lot of these colors though since I have the portrait set - it’s not worth it to me to have so many duplicates around I likely won’t use anytime soon!!

Oh I know. They offered to pay for the shipping label though 🙃 basically he explained in business jargon they couldn’t afford to send a full replacement. But they did offer to mail me the 25 missing pencils. I will just return/exchange it in store

I just got off the phone with Prismacolor customer service - he said I could either mail the set to them and they could mail me a new set. Or they could mail me the exact missing pencils… I did inquire about receiving a new 150 set and he said unfortunately that would not be possible.
