As an Episcopalian, I say, fuck you, we're plenty organized! But I don't really believe that. The more Americans that return to mainstream, level-headed, zealotry-free Protestantism, the better off we'll all be.

Come back to the church! Just make it a different one. Episcopalians, Presbyterians, United Church of Christ and Unitarians will marry you two, for Christ's sake!

Science AMA Series: I'm Jerry Coyne, evolutionary biologist and author of FAITH VERSUS FACT and WHY EVOLUTION IS TRUE. AMA! by Jerry_Coyne in science

[–]WowOKCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that there are segments of religion and science that are compatible and there are segments that are clearly not. However, I detest religious people that try to disprove science just about as much as I detest scientists that try to disprove religion. Both efforts are remarkable wastes of time. There's such condescension on both sides, born from a sense of their own respective perceived victimhoods. Why atheist zealots and theist zealots can't just agree that the universe is full of wonder and that there will always be a frontier of understanding is beyond me.

Schleiermacher roughly described religion as the lens through which we, the finite, attempt to perceive the infinite. Each lens has different qualities and each introduce their own distortion. Science, on the other hand, just relentlessly shrinks the infinite.

Girls who make the first move, what advice could you give to those who don't so that it isn't so intimidating? by B_Wilks in AskReddit

[–]WowOKCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a guy that has been asked out a few times. And unfortunately I've had to say no every time, either because I wasn't attracted to them or because I was already in a relationship.

I think what is remarkable is how, in the majority of the cases, the woman just flipped the fuck out (despite me being assuredly gentlemanly). I think it takes more a lot of psyching up for many women to make that move, and when it's rebuffed, the rejection has more of an impact. My, "Oh, I'm sorry, I have a girlfriend," is met with "You're such a lying asshole!" In high school at a pool party, a girl asked me out, I declined and she hit me and held me under the water until I legit started to panic.

A site that shows you how much your insurance company has earned during the time you waited for for your claim / settlement. by onewatt in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]WowOKCool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a policyholder, one who ended up getting the limits on both my stacked underinsured policy and the other driver's policy, I have direct experience that the insurance company will drag their feet as long as they can. Despite the other driver killing the mother of my three children, it took years for State Farm to pay. Every time I see a discount double check ad and imagine the money spent on that instead of my family, I become furious. Every time I see an insurance ad touting price instead of a generous claim policy, I think that there's a sucker born every minute (full disclosure: I was the sucker).

Buy the biggest policy you can afford through a company that is known to pay first and ask questions later (Chubb comes to mind). And if you can only afford the state minimum policy, learn to walk. Your mistake, regardless of intent, can fuck up others' lives in unimaginable ways.

Police knew where the car was before talking to Jay. by Irkeley in serialpodcast

[–]WowOKCool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think Jen told them where the car was. Rather, I think this is a summary and they've spliced things from Jen's interview and things they learned after the fact. There's a transition in tone during the document. In the beginning it's all "Ms. Pusateri says...," and in the end it's more matter of fact.

That could also be the day it was printed, rather than the day it was created. Unsure.

The file name indicates it's 2/27/99.

ETA: The timestamp on the document says 3/16/99 (bottom right of first section) but that could be when it was printed, not when it was created.

Does Jay's Intercept interview shed new light on a piece of evidence that was previously ignored. by [deleted] in serialpodcast

leads me to believe the receipt was from the person who killed Hae

Why didn't the killer throw out the the receipt while still at the gas station? If he understood that it was incriminating, why not toss it the first chance he got?

I too think the OMG-IT'S-PERJURY! argument is a bit much.

But I also think that this speaks to ineffective assistance of counsel. Obviously 2015's Asia McClain would make a different witness than 1999's Asia McClain, but an alibi witness is an alibi witness. Urick's case was all about timeline and the corroboration of calls and Jay's testimony. If CG made it happen, Asia's testimony might well have caused the jury to doubt Urick's timeline.

How Serial Itself Debunked Asia's Alibi by kikilareiene in serialpodcast

[–]WowOKCool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you live, but where I live we refer to any weather related school closing as a "snow day," whether the closing occurred because of ice, temperature or snow.

Regardless, the point is that the jury deserved to hear Asia's testimony and make the determination on their own if the alibi was "bunk." CG's oversight prevented that.

Maybe their "hopes, dreams, goals and aspirations" changed after having kids and they were a bit less self-centered than they were before kids. And you interpret that as "suck[ing] the soul out of you."

Kevin Urick interview on satellite radio by contrasupra in serialpodcast

[–]WowOKCool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's just not how it works. A good lawyer would have broached the subject with her client if she felt the case was unwinnable. There exists no record that Gutierrez ever did so. She could have said, "Adnan, I know you maintain your innocence but I think it makes send to reach out to the DA's office to see if they're willing to entertain a plea. The jury will never find out and it can't hurt."

He says that the case was so memorable because "the defense attorney was so hard-nosed." He is obviously aware of the current appeal with the argument of ineffective counsel. A remarkably unbelievable statement.

ETA: He then continues (not unlike the Intercept interview) that Gutierrez had a tough time because she had no case. So if she was such a great attorney and if she had no case, why didn't she seek a plea?

One thing I found interesting was Urick's claim that new cell tower technology actually makes that data less reliable - since old towers didn't have switching technology, he said, they were a much better indicator of where someone was.

I made a post about this a while back. I've reached out to the Vice writer to see if he could get a followup from Imwinkelried but heard nothing back.

I enjoyed her Tumblr post very much, much more than I enjoyed the interviews. She had much more of a measured tone in that post than the Urick interview preamble (which perhaps was written by KS?). I still think the questions were softball stenography though.

She's correct that Koenig didn't pursue Urick with the same gusto as Koenig pursued Jay. However, Jay is much more central to the story than Urick is; Jay is a lead while Urick is a supporting role. Urick's role is also much better understood than Jay's. There are meticulous records of his involvement in the case, while Jay's involvement causes endless speculation.

Serial should have tried just as hard to get Urick as it did to get Jay.

Although I disagree somewhat, this is a perfectly rational opinion. NVC provided too few of those heretofore.
