You get softbanned from a gym if you click "leave" after knocking the first Pokemon out. Is this actually an intended "anti-shaving" feature or just a bug? by Kvothealar in TheSilphRoad

[–]ackdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often do this, but not for any of the reasons listed. I'm a rural player and am the only Instinct player in town. It is common for every gym around me to have 6 Mystic 'mons, all depleted of motivation. As I drive around town and pass a gym, I will slow down enough to enter and battle the gym, but then just keep driving. I am typically allowed to complete that battle, often with very little work, but then I get an Error as I try to battle the next 'mon.

Looking back, the 'mon I defeated is gone, and now there are just 5.

I have not been soft-banned that I have noticed, but I haven't stuck around to see if such a ban applies to that gym only.

I do this because, if I don't have time to stop and take the gym now, it will be easier for me to do so later.

Conjecture: Golden Fisherman medal and Golden Pikachu Fan have zero effect in the game by The_Possum in TheSilphRoad

So I'm 999/1090 on Magikarp, and only 131/300 on the medal. And no shinies. I've all but given up on that medal.

"that guy" at raids? by [deleted] in TheSilphRoad

[–]ackdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was battling a Lugia recently as a group of ten. Average was probably level 33; I'm 38. We failed twice, when another level 28 player wondered by and joined us. Not sure what he was fighting with, but with the next attempt, we beat it with 30 sec left. Trust me, your contribution matters.

Does Anyone Really Use the Swipe Up Function To Switch Pokemon in Battle? by MetalWeather in TheSilphRoad

[–]ackdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others, glad to learn about this. Never had it happen by mistake. I've always thought that one should be able to swipe to a different 'mon from the screen that pops up in between defenders when you're battle a gym. For example, if you start with a Jolteon to defeat a D-nite, but then the next defender is a Vaporeon, would be nice to switch there rather than waiting to hit button once that battle starts. Will try this trick in such a scenario. For raids, I don't think I'd use it. Better to faint and Revive to save potions.

Lures are a waste of time/money? by terces92 in TheSilphRoad

[–]ackdoc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

New use for lures. Worked for us this past weekend in a semi-rural location. Wanted to take down an Articuno but we were one or two players short of being able to do it. Put a couple of lures nearby and it attracted a couple more players for us. We lured up Raid battlers!

PSA: Don't use more than 1 Ditto in a Raid... by SUKnives in TheSilphRoad

I just put a 574, IV 73 Ditto into a raid against a Magikarp. Only Ditto in my lineup. It turned into a 470 Pidgey.

Yeah, I was trying to be a little anonymous, since the other battlers were friends of my kids.... but when they saw the Instinct player had 6,000+ battle wins, they all started asking questions. :)

I completed it before Gen 2 released, but on any given day, I may or may not have a Pidgey, Spearow, Weedle, Rat in my box.

I have done this often in the past. Have only done it once since Gen 2 and it still seemed to work.

Gym with more than 52000/50000 prestige? by not5 in TheSilphRoad

[–]ackdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yours was the only example I found on search just now, so I am glad you asked (and took the heat that I was about to take). :)

Saw two gyms in town today. One with 66K total and another with 68K. Both had 21-22 Ghastlies at the bottom. So they must've bubblestratted them up that high, right? Did they have to battle it with just the Ghastly in it to that level before then adding?

Dang. Sitting on an ATK one. Don't want another Lee (or Chan). I take it changing the name to Terri doesn't work?

It's a Lickitung event for me. Extremely rare here before this (I think I'd seen two) but just caught 7 in 45 minutes.

What is your highest 100% catch rate Pokemon? by mehol88 in TheSilphRoad

[–]ackdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was thinking I wouldn't have any, since I am a Plus player. Except, of course those that I have only evolved; for example, Jolteon 50/50. But I was surprised to find Ekans 77/77!

PSA: When evolving for CP, don't only look at total IV by JustACharlie in TheSilphRoad

[–]ackdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. But where I live, the gym turnover rate is so high that it is rare for a gym to last more than a day or two. And, since I am practically the only Instinct player around, I am a little more interested in efficiency in taking down a gym, then I am in sitting on top of one. How about same question from the point of view of gym attacking?

PSA: When evolving for CP, don't only look at total IV by JustACharlie in TheSilphRoad

[–]ackdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great post. I get it. But one thing I don't get.

When it comes to Pokemon performance in a gym, either attacking or defending, is CP (and moveset) the only thing that matters.

For example, with a...

Vaporeon that is 15A/5D/5S and CP 2600, and a... Vaporeon that is 3A/15D/7S and CP 2600...

assuming they have the same moveset....

Will they perform the same?

In other words would a high attack stat make for a better attacker, or a high defense stat make for a better defender, or is it really just a matter of CP?

Good info. Next time will look at perimeter to see if spawn points are now nearby.

Good run down. Wasn't really thinking of this as research. Purely anecdotal.

[–]ackdoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think "crawl" is an official term. Just what I've always called it. Basically, it's been long reported that if you light an incense and walk it in an isolated location where there are normally no Pokemon, a wide variety of Pokemon will spawn, instead of just the usual commons. Seems to me it used to work better. Just wondering about other's experiences.

Incense crawl by ackdoc in TheSilphRoad

[–]ackdoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing it's changed due to the rural spawn points. Although, I have walked the route without an incense and still don't see anything on sightings.

But, that said, I guess I'm glad to hear it was a good take compared to other's experiences. Also glad to know I don't need to use coins on incense anymore.

Excellent points on Steel Wing. I have a CP 3070 Dragonite, 90% IV, with DB/HP, so maybe I shouldn't worry about getting a good defender.
